Volk wins are not overrated loser. Most divisions have their talents stopped around the Dustin Poirier level. I mean look at how Holloway and Volk were at the top of featherweight. Dustin Poirier is around that level. But lightweight is so stacked you had guys like Khabib, then Charles Oliveria, now Islam Makachev. Those guys are even beyond that. Dustin Poirier will be underrated just because he's never held the belt, but we shouldn't forget how accomplished this guy is.

It's not even a levels difference necessarily; you can argue he had awful matchups in his title shots, this third one included. He challenged against arguably the most elite grapplers in lightweight or even UFC history, and still put both of them in trouble before getting crushed. nah man. Being a champion is something else, that feeling must be something else, a feeling Dustin has never felt. When Dustin started at 19 years old, he wanted to be the champion. Being the champ was his goal. "Without this win, it doesn’t really change anything", it does change a lot. If he wins against Islam (which I don't think he will), Dustin will go down in history books as the champion, otherwise he'll go down in history books as the #1 fighter who couldn't be the champ.

Dustin has to march down Islam and try to catch him early in order to win, if he puts on the pressure right out of the gate the takedown will be easier to see coming and will take away effectivity from Makhachev's kicks, , Islam doesn't have the best chin so if Poirier manages to catch him clean he may put him out cold, even if he grazes him he'll most likely hurt him badly and start the finishing sequence.
