A Filipina tries southern cooking, and asks "what IS this food"? I have no idea what grits, cornbread, or hush puppies are, but due to your numerous requests for me to try 'em, I'm about to find out how good (or bad) they are, when I visit something called a 'Cracker Barrel'! I never thought I'd be making a video called "A Filipina Tries Southern Cooking", but here we are. Time to dig in!

My Filpina friend (Who is small even for a Filpina) came to Alabama for a visit . She started walking the side of the road and people started pulling over to the side of the road thinking she was a lost child . She was taken back by all the concerned people . She later visited other states but liked Alabama the best .

I am from the Southwest USA and never had eaten grits until I was an adult. I thought they were a coarse cream of wheat, and I was putting milk and sugar on them. I thought they sucked. But a Southerner told me to put butter, salt and pepper on them, and mix them with over easy eggs. I have been a fan every since then.

Tennessean here: if you are intent on trying more Southern foods, may I suggest: Fried Chicken, Fried Catfish (traditionally goes with Hushpuppies), and all-important Southern Barbeque. Every region has their own distinct style of BBQ. Most BBQ in the south is Pork-based. If you go to places like Texas, then you will see more Beef BBQ.

We had work to do while they were here at diffrent times . In 2015 I got to go visit them in the Philippines. The things I learned and the new way I saw the world made me feel embarrassed by some of the things I had said . But watching this video made me fight back tears for two dear dear friends who took their place in my heart next to my two other daughters. Wish I could make some gumbo for Pea and show her real southern cookin.

Hominy comes from yellow or white maize, also known as field corn. Dried hominy kernels are soaked in an alkali solution of lye or slaked lime. This process, called nixtamalization, removes the hull and germ, making the corn easier to grind and cook with. Nixtamalization also helps the kernels release more of their nutrients, including niacin (also known as vitamin B3), and makes them easier to digest, too. Hominy kernels are around three times larger than your average yellow corn kernel.

Hello Pea! The Cracker Barrel chain of restaurants is a good resource of 1940-1955 Americana . As you found out about "grits", it is actually the heart of the kernel released during the shelling of dried corn. Back in the "old days " prior to the advent of machinery production of corn the shelling and grinding was by hand. The tip of the kernel was removed and the little white grain which was used as chicken feed or slave fare.I do so wish that someone could have assisted you in planning your tour. As an "old man " (70÷) ex-milatary I spent most of my leave time exploring my home country. The Florida keys to Bangor Maine, Brooklyn Naval yard (CVS11) to San Diego, to Bremerton Washington. There is as much variety in the USA as in the Philippines. And if you think that the Philippines are hot (temperatures) you should try Tempe Arizona. The devil lives in western Texas and rents out New Mexico and Arizona as a slumlord. Of course the only way to stay cool is to go under ground, Carlsbad caverns. If you enjoy caves you should try the Under ground sea Sweetwater Tennessee (19 acre pond in a cave). Most of my country men and women don't realize the vastness and variety their own land. From Mt.Rushmore to the Alamo. Thank you for your videos and providing an insight to the Philippines. Not to me so for me as I attended McKinley elementary school Subic 1yr in 1959.

YES! I'm 76 retired for sure. Ex Jarhead combat Vet. When I was young I didn't have time for much sight seeing. My last road trip (2021) I drove from Puget Sound (Salish Sea), to Ft.Myers Fl and back. 8000 miles including side trips. I never used to do side trips but I did that time. 4.5 months. Like to Texas I'd drive most direct and fastest route to DFW. Nah, I stopped in places I always wanted to like Santa Fe, Taos, and "Ghost Hotel" (Lady in Red room) Tonopah NV. Truly so much to see and do. I'm not certain if it is possible to see/do it all in 1 lifetime. Counting Alaska, Hawaii, and Pacific terr. I doubt it is possible. From fishing and diving Mariannas to to Brown Brown watch as they fish to nite clubbing in Miami or New York, and Sinning in Vegas. I like Montana too. Worthy of an Encyclopedia of adventures, in the USA.

Grits with salt, pepper, butter, and a soft fried egg is my favorite. When you told them you were here to try southern food, they really should have suggested biscuits and gravy. That's the quintessential southern food. Also fried greens with vinegar and bacon. It's kind of sad that neither of your servers knew what grits are. First one said they're like oatmeal? No! The second one was super helpful, "they're a breakfast thing that people like to get." 😳 Such a nuanced description, thanks for that. 😂

another great video... most southern people do eat hushpuppies with tartar sauce. If you can get a chance to eat that together which usually served with fried catfish or any fried fish item then you will understand how good it is. Also grits can have almost anything added to it... depends on preference. Some people add butter and have a toast with jam others put bacon bits in their grits.

Whoa, Pea! You are literally "hitting it out of the park" with this "American series". 🎉👍🏻 This was the best introduction of Cracker Barrel that I have ever seen. I love your sense of humor and the way you describe your experiences traveling in the States. It’s so great that you were able to enjoy the friendliness of the people in the South. I am sure that most Americans will be just as welcoming to you as the people that you have already met on your tour of this country. You would make an awesome "Ambassador of the Phillipines" to any country that you visit mainly because of your gregarious personality. Glad that you loved the hush puppies, they are my favorite side dish especially when having a seafood meal! Grits are good with butter, salt and pepper or cheese mixed in them. Shrimp and grits is a well known dish in South Carolina if you ever get there on your next visit to the U.S. Was that a "lucky strike" or are you really a bowler at home? 😂 Take care and enjoy your weekend.

Grits are much better with butter, salt, and pepper. Mix them all up, and they taste great. They are very bland without doing that. The salt, pepper and butter is what gives them the awesome flavor. Authentic grits are made out of hominy corn which is a dent corn I think put through a process to make the kernel swell up then dried and ground into grits. The Native Americans use to use wood ashes to swell up the kernels and brake the hull, I am an old man and was born and raised in the south. Great video

Trying to find a good description of grits as I know them, here, and this one is good. Grits are ground partched corn (hominy, which is corn swollen up with lime)(which is how indigenous peoples of the Americas got more nutrients out of their corn). You can buy a snack version of the dried kernels under the trade name, "Corn Nuts", but you need good teeth to eat them. Hominy soup, with pork or chicken, should be available in any good Mexican restaurant. I could live on that stuff.

If you ever go to Cracker barrel again or any other southern style restaurant, try the country fried/Chicken fried steak. It’s basically beefsteak or cube steak, breaded with flour, deep-fried and smothered in gravy. Or try biscuits and gravy which is just biscuits (not cookies 😂) with gravy on them. Another famous southern restaurant is Waffle House. Obviously their main is waffles and It’s kind of like a small town café.
