I think Anupama's question about the good looks was a valid one, but I don't agree with Fawad's response that people are more likely to invest in good looking characters. In my opinion good looks only count for something when the actor in question can act. For example actresses like Katrina, Sonam and Aishwarya and actors like Imran Khan, Zayed Khan, Fardeen Khan and Abhishek Bachchan - no matter how good looking they are, I rarely ever invest in a character they are playing because they aren't very good actors (once in a while they do a good job though - like Guru/ZNMD/Neerja). Alia and Fawad are good looking (well Alia's average if you ask me), but they can act - that's what makes the difference, that's what will make us invest in them! There are so many films where you invest in characters that are not particularly good looking because the film making and the content is strong. In fact I'd probably invest far more in an actor I can relate to, like Dhanush, Nawazuddin or Irrfan Khan - these people don't look like "filmstars," and that is more reason for me to believe that they are the characters they play. Good looks would just be a bonus really - they count for nothing if the person in question can't convince you they are the character they're playing! Why is it that we invest so much more in a character Deepika Padukone plays nowadays (Piku/Tamasha/Finding Fanny), whereas 4 years back she was as good as cardboard on screen (eg. Bachna Ae Haseeno/Love Aaj Kal/ Lafangey Parindey)? Her good looks have always been intact right? But now that she can act, we actually care what her characters go through on-screen (provided it's a good film of course). I for sure don't care to watch good looking actors who bring nothing else to the table - I hate it when a "good looking actor" ruins a potentially good movie with a bad performance (eg. Nargis Fakhri in Rockstar). In fact, when someone is talented and completely bowls you over with their performance, they start becoming attractive to the audience anyway, regardless of looks. I remember when people found Shahrukh Khan, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Kalki Koechlin and Irrfan Khan average, weird or even gross looking but now they're considered sexy right? Sonam once said that people don't take her acting talent seriously because she's so good looking, and bad looking people are automatically considered good actors - what utter nonsense! Deepika, Kareena and Kangana are insanely good looking, and also good actors who get their due credit. Himesh Reshammiya, Uday Chopra, Bobby Deol and Jacky Bhagnani are bad looking and are equally bad actors who get the flak they deserve. Their looks never come in the way of the appreciation of a good performance or criticism of a bad performance. It's very convenient for Sonam to deflect the criticism she receives on to her looks, but actors who speak like this are nothing but narcissistic and ignorant. There are so many films, especially in regional cinema, where the reliance is on content, not on looks - films like Jigarthanda/Soodhu Kavvum/Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom/Visaranai/Kaaka Muttai/Aaranya Kaandam/ Vazhakku En 18-9/Kadhal/Mayakkam Enna/Subramaniyapuram/Pudhupettai/Angaadi Theru (Tamil), Premam (Malayalam). I'm sure other languages have their share too. I urge Anupama to try watching them - these are just as important to watch as the Hollywood movies you review. The fact that most of these films did really well proves that the regional audience invests in characters more than looks - most of these films had really average looking people in them - but people loved the characters! The character of Malar from the Malayalam film Premam is the best example of this. I agree that offbeat films like these with lesser known average looking actors would never do as well in Bollywood or the Telugu Industry, but hopefully that changes with time. I already see that change emerging in Hindi cinema and it's very exciting!

I think this depends on the film though. There are quite a few commercial films where the plot is crap but it only does well because of the persons good looks or star status, dilwale is a great recent example of this.

Of course a big star is going to get a huge opening if they do an obviously commercial film. There's a large section of the audience who are only interested in seeing the stars and nothing else - those are the people that contribute to stupid films like Dilwale and Kick making money. I'm talking about people who actually love cinema and its content. It's really difficult to bank on stars to give you good content usually - that's the sad state of our cinema unfortunately. We have to rely on new blood to bring about some change.

Shiv Dogg I don't disagree with your comment there. I feel that looks definitely can make people notice the film more though (society is very much looks orientated), along with some amount of star status, both of those things must go hand in hand. Simply looking good alone, isn't always enough for a film to do well. Also, a person who doesn't fit these standards, may not do well either. It depends on the film and script. Its true I actually prefer to watch the newer actors since I feel like they're trying more different roles.

Hi Anupama, I enjoy watching your interviews but I have to take issue with your questions about physical appearance. As a film critic, it would really help if you didn't keep commenting on how 'gorgeous/beautiful etc. ppl are. Its just awkward and not a qualification to be a good actor. You clearly don't say it to directors, composers, singers, or actors who are not conventionally 'good looking', whatever that definition may be. So let's leave these actors and their looks alone. Fact is that they look like regular people, only they have better staff. Additionally, asking Sid and Alia how long they starved for to look so great in a vogue cover, implies, to young people watching, that that might be the only way to achieve such appearances. I would appreciate some responsibility and thought in your line of questioning. Thanks.
