It's difficult to even make political films in India, so you are left with no option but to make remakes or easy films, especially when you don't want to make 'masala' or mass films.

Fun fact- Chiyaan has fondly worked in only one small budget Hindi film- Bejoy Nambiar's 'David' (that consists 3 short stories). He has even dubbed in Hindi for himself. The film turned out to be a complete disaster. However Chiyaan's story is adorable in it!

What was Anurag Kashyap trying to do all these years? He was trying to make movies (that he truly believed in) hoping to get an audience as well. The more people watching his work would have encouraged him to make more such films. BUT, his work didn't get the audience in large numbers. Thats fine, not every filmmaker can get the audience to the theatres. Did his movies get any prestigious international awards, i am not sure. The only thing he does consistently is PREACH.

Anurag is a Genre Filmmaker. Genre films don't have many prestigious awards except mainstream once like Oscars, BAFTA, Golden Globes, etc. But for that you really need to create big buzz.
