I'm 22, a budding filmmaker, and honestly im really grateful for all the accessible tech we have to make films these days. Magic lantern has opened the door for me to get some really good stuff. Accessibility was rough growing up but nowadays this sorta stuff is actually pretty affordable! even if i were to just use my iphone i could probably make that work. it was when i saw the prices of the EOS M and 650D when I decided "well dang guess i gotta get back into it" after not doing much with it after i graduated from high school, where i took video classes

I wish I saw this video in 1987. I started BEFORE flying erase heads! Boy was I excited when I got my first deck with flying erase heads. My first "professional" capture card was a Matrix and cost about $1500.

Your mindset and correctives, as it relates to GSO (Gear & Specs Obsession), are on point. And I strongly believe, this is the reason for so few comments on this excellent and refreshing presentation. Gears and specs have so drowned the KZbin platform that, whoever submits their mind to this niche, can no longer focus on what is relevant as a film maker: Story Telling! Everything else is secondary. The audience does not care about the type of gear or spec that was used to achieve the end product. Their concern is: Content and Creativity. GSO (Gear & Specs Obsession) is the worst disease from which a film maker can suffer. Cinematography is an art. Unfortunately, the artistic aspect is so undervalued compared to the past eras. You deserve a majestic 'Round of Applause'.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Means a lot! I agree 100% obviously. All I see are videos and posts on social media about cameras and "Can I make a movie with this camera or that camera" and most of them don't even try because they're stumped by GSO as you mentioned. I was lucky I grew up in a time where the options were close to none and that forced me to focus on what really matters. Image quality was never a concern. Not even in my realm of thought. Of course everyone likes having a good camera and these days most cameras if not all are more than enough to work with. We are living in a particular time where everyone has a chance to express themselves. This wasn't the case 20 and 30 years ago. Thank you so much for watching. All the best to you! 😊

Vou continuar a seguir o teu canal. (Trabalhaste com o Rapazote. Que fixe. Gosto muito dele 👍👍)

Nice, I'd agree with a lot of what you say, but there is a space for "gear need" depending on the story you want to tell to a point. Editing between a VHS camera and recorder also SUCKED LOL, I was over the moon when I had my first video capture thing, an AV mac, until I realized it was actually worse than 2 VHS decks in most ways, but I could finally do effects with it. But long story short, I'm back at it again for the howevermanyeth time, new cameras, new ideas etc. Tech IS a lot cheaper and more accessible now than it was back then, so maybe this time I'll even publish something hihi, my best sofar is getting a short shown as a piece of art in an art show.
@TheFilmmakingChannel Жыл бұрын
Yes, of course gear will always matter to some extent but I do believe younger people obsess too much over gear and specs and don't actually aquire any real world experience. They are blocked in their heads by gear expectations. Did you publish your short here on youtube?
@noth606 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFilmmakingChannel No, tbh never thought about publishing the short outside of the context of that art show. At this point I'd have to try to contact the girl I did that with to ask if she has a copy of it, I have no idea if I saved it anywhere apart from the Premiere project and the output tape, neither of which I have anymore, I don't even remember what happened to the PC I used for editing it, I think I gave it to the girl who was the actor. It was back in 2005 or something like that. Anyway, it could well be that younger people obsess too much about gear, I've seen fancy stuff for sale quite a bit, like full shortmovie gear for even 4k. Look like sets ppl bought to make a short movie or similar and stopped using after..

From that era if you can remember the details but did it seem like it was swamped by politics or like actual filmmaking because I was an infint at the turn of the century I didn’t start to notice hints of that until 2016 I understand this isn’t entirely on topic but I’m just curious.
@TheFilmmakingChannel Жыл бұрын
At the time the internet barely existed so the world was a very different place. Politics had little to no impact on filmmaking unlikel today. Things were calmer and people didn't make a fuss about anything and evertyhing. The 90s were one of the best decades for movies in Hollywood. Dozens of classic films came out in the 90s. I still remember watching The Matrix when it opened in 1999. What an event it was. I hope that is what you meant by politics.
