As a life insurance agent it was amazing to hear another person in a death related industry's (seperate from my own) perspective on death. and the finances of it.
@hulablondie844 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely important. My Mother in law passed away suddenly over a yr ago and her having all of her shit together made it so much easier for us to not have to think about her finances. We literally only had to worry about grieving. She was great with her money and opted to have the cheapest cremation possible.

Yeah, but married is still worth it. When you get it right, you have magic.
@LifeLostSoul4 жыл бұрын
Expect that's not true anymore it's less than 50% it's about 41% and keeps dropping. People are getting married latter in life and waiting to be financially stable before getting married. Like people are waiting to have a stable relationship before getting married and not just jumping into it or only getting married because then that makes sex okay.
@Pink_Sinthetic4 жыл бұрын
I believe fewer people are also choosing to get married. So you combine people getting married when they are older, more self-aware, and financially stable, as well as a fair number of people not going the marriage route and you end up with a decently steady decline on divorce in institutional marriage.

My sister and I did our grandmas hair and makeup after she passed. We grew up putting her hair in curlers for her and it just felt wrong to have somebody who doesn’t know how she likes it to do it for her. I thought the experience would be weird, but it was really special for us both. I’m so glad that we spent that last time doing her hair for her.

Thanks so much for doing this interview! My mom died in an accident when I was 19. I was lucky enough to live in a small, tight knit community and we were able to experience her death in a totally unique (for these days) way. We were able to build her casket ourselves and prepare her body. It was easily the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done and such an important part of how we said goodbye. Because we were so involved, her gravesite also became very important, we designed the headstone ourselves using materials from our property and still visit often, leaving pictures, gifts and coffee. I have since helped other family and friends navigate this process and prepare their loved ones. I couldn’t recommend this enough. I have not regretted it for a second and I share an incredibly special bond with all those that helped us in that process. I don’t know exactly how much was saved monetarily in this process, but it was significant.

This is so beautiful! What a way to be able to both thoroughly celebrate the specialness of the person who is gone, and take time to grieve together and work through some of the letting-go process. I've never heard of anyone here who has had that experience, but it seems a real return to a more community-centric model?
@drasco610842 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a beautiful experience.. I have family in a rural area in Mexico. I remember the viewing for one of my uncles was at home, at another cousins house. Burial was a little more involved than in the US. Grave was dug with shovels, not a machine! And mostly the men in the family joined in filling the soil back in to bury him as well. When my grandparents over here in the US were buried they didn't even lower the casket into the ground while we were there.

Honestly two of the women on the internet I have an insane amount of respect for. My mother died in October and dealing with her death, estate and paying for her funeral has massively affected all 3 of her daughters. I now have life insurance, as a single parent with health issues and have increased my pension contributions to the max I can afford every month!

Start young! My parents married very young, had children young and still started long-term financial planning on a single income. It was the ultimate gift of love for their children. They had prepaid funeral plans and everything they owned was POD to the three of us because you know, someday..... "Someday" came when they were in their 50s, passing away in the same year. We merely had to make the necessary calls to institutions and pick out songs for their funerals. God bless the lady working in the lingerie department helping 2 sisters who were laughing hysterically at her pushing a gift receipt for a robe for their mother. Mom had always been clear -- bury her in a robe with a book😊

So, I'm a nurse and I can't even count how many times I've heard, "I don't know what he/she/they would want because we never talked about it." Or having a loved one say they have no idea how they would ever pay the medical bills since they never saved for something like this. I love that Caitin talked about torturing your loved ones with bureaucratic nonsense after you die but what if you aren't dead but can't make your own decisions? As always, I loved watching this. You both are great.

Great podcast! Just wanted to share Indian funeral culture. We do exactly like mentioned in video- Take care of body at home, washing the body- Dressing up the body like a bride or groom if the spouse is still alive. It is considered auspiscious to touch the feet of the dead, as a way of recieving blessings. And the creamation service wont be costlier than 50-60 thousand Rupees ( 840 Dollars)

I remember when my Mum passed away and they said we needed to buy a box for her to be cremated in and also a box for her ashes. I couldn't believe the price range of these boxes that WOULD GET BURNED!!! LIKE?????? IT"S GONNA GET BURNED!!! WHY WOULD YOU PAY SO MUCH MONEY FOR THAT????? At any rate, we got a simple pine box because it was a natural material but like man, they can really get you with all those costs.
@iloveprivacy81674 жыл бұрын
Ditto with my Dad - I had to kind of channel him and ask for something simpler (a couple of times, IIRC). Literally no one but the crematorium ever saw it, anyway!

Same with my sister when my sister found out she was dying (cancer) she wanted to be cremated she planned her funeral she was thinking b/c the coffin was just going to be burnt she thought a cardboard coffin would make more sense and be cheaper, turns out no a cardboard coffin was $1500 and a plain white wooden one was $600 yes she went for the cheapest one and we wrote all over the coffin in the last few weeks that we had left with her.

I have very much enjoyed your videos Caitlin. They are so very educational. I plan to have a productive conversation with my husband about each of our plans. I believe it should be up to the person who is dying, if that’s possible. Otherwise it should be what the family or loved ones need and can afford if there are no plans. When my dad was dying I took care of him for 18 months until his death. Fortunately I had 20 years of home health care experience. He wanted a traditional funeral. Unbeknownst to me, my sister had badgered him into a cremation because it was cheaper. When I found out I backed her up against the wall and told her never to bring the subject up again….or else! Then I asked him what he truly wanted, and he told me the traditional style embalmment with an open casket. I told him that’s what will happen, you have planned for this and that’s what you’ll get. It has so much to do with what era they are from, and what they’ve become aware of. Just like you said about the Hindu family, it should be according to the beliefs of the one dying , if possible.

I am halfway through this episode and REALLY enjoying it. I can hardly describe how educational this has been, and largely because both of you are so open about finances, income, your businesses etc. I've really struggled with finances because when I ask for someone's help outside of my immediate, immediate family, I get really evasive answers, because they want to give me advice without disclosing all of their finances. They won't say, "This is what I did, this is what I earn, this is how my businesses are run, and these are the accounts I have." But because Caitlin is so open about finances and her business, I feel like I'm actually learning.

This is actually a really important conversation to have. I live with my fiance and his parents, and we are not saving money. We should be. I'm going to try and set up a savings account and get some money stashed away. We are trying to get married and have a family. This is something everybody should be talking about. Talk to your family, talk to your partner, start shoving money away because you *will die eventually* and you don't want your children or your parents to be put under immense financial stress because you went and died. I'm going to start saving for my own funeral, and that's not a morbid thought, it's a practical one. Edit a year later: I set up an Acorns account and I’m starting to shove money in a Roth IRA and I’m also investing. It’s fun and interesting.

I love Ask a Mortician! Interesting conversation about why people fear death. I’m working through it, but I fear death because I’m happy and I’m not ready to be done gaining new experiences. Coincidentally I have been in counseling before because I get nervous committing romantically. It was determined that that nervousness comes from the “finality” of committing to one person for the rest of my life. Dark, but interesting content. Thanks for sharing, TFD!

Everything stated is so true. I can tell you that I definitely learned a lesson after losing my father almost 10 years ago (crazy to say 😔). Seeing my mother empty her bank account because he didn’t have anything arranged was terrible. As I grew older, I quickly set up my own retirement funds & emergency savings accounts, etc. I’m definitely looking into opening other accounts, getting a living will, funeral plans, etc. Working in the medical field, where death is a common thing, I’ve learned things I want and wouldn’t want done to myself or to burden my family with making decisions.... P.S. love this video!

I loved it, but I thought you'd talk more about how you have to prepare the paperwork things for when you'll die. Like. The insurances, the contracts that your next of kin don't know about but will need to close, stuff like that. Could you do a video about it ?

Great video! I loved how Caitlin brought up the newer ways “to die” such as water cremation and human composting! I’ve never heard of that. 20:30 I've made these plans recently. I wanted to do it for a long time (hugely thanks to watching Caitlin's videos!) but my friend's boyfriend recently died (he was 30 years old; car accident) and it made me realize that just because I'm 24 doesn't mean I can't die any moment. And I don't want my loved ones to worry and fight about what I would have wanted to happen. I'm also a sensitive person when it comes to body autonomy so I really want to have control of what happens after I die (for example - in my country you rent a grave and if no-one pays your rent after the 100 years they just dig you out and put you elsewhere - I don't want that). The main reason I'm writing this hear is that this process of thinking about it, putting it on paper, giving it to someone, made me feel calm and much less scared of death. Just like Chelsea explained about her being prepared from the financial point of view (I don't really need that, I'm not a business/property owner.) Thank you for this awesome collab!

First off, this was an impeccably timed podcast given what happened in 2020 and wish more people had a chance to watch this epsidoe. Also, I will always argue that everyone should have a prenup. Even it's as simple as using it to keep your family heirlooms in your family, or the pets you brought into the relationship your pet, or the tools you use to make a living. Doing it when you like each other will have better results for both people than the fights that will ensue in a divorce when you may hate each other.

I work at an investment bank in the tech area, my experienced manager advised me to set a loss limit on any stocks you buy. If you buy a stock for $200 then you have to be prepared for that stock to go down, but at some point you need to stop the bleeding. If that stock value goes all the way down to say, $125 or whatever losses you are comfortable with, sell it, especially if it's not likely to go up in the short term future. That is for one offs, not for something like a recession or a bear market. Think of it like people who held out on selling bitcoin because they thought the price would go back up.

I have taken care of probably hundreds of dying/ dead patients after 20 years in nursing........ I have also lost an obscene number of very close family members within the last 5 years. I was crushed by the loss of my Dad and Grandmother the most I think. The interesting part is this; my 4 closest family members and I solely took care of my Dad at home the last week of his life and care for him when he died. Having seen death very often professionally, also having been to a lot of traditional funerals with embalming. My Dad had an extremely difficult dying process with a lot of pain that was difficult to manage. After he passed he looked so free, of pain, suffering and misery. He was the most beautiful dead person I’ve ever seen. It ripped my heart out to help put him in the body bag and let a stranger take him away. Even so, I’m so glad we didn’t have him embalmed. I don’t ever want that memory. It seriously intrigues and creeps me out all at the same time. The dead aren’t scary it will happen to ALL of us, & if u haven’t lost anyone close to you I’m so happy for you. But prepare, come to grips with your own mortality. Sadly It will happen eventually
