The story of his programming skills as a kid was always one I rolled my eyes at. I was coding in BASIC at age 5 and had moved on to Visual Basic and C++ by age 11. At 12 I had several games under my belt. My problem was that my parents were financially illiterate and poor, the latter more than likely because of the former, so I never had the tools or support to try and turn that skill into something I could be paid for; I always gave away my programs for free. People drastically underestimate the impact having those resources has on being able to build wealth. I just know there are legitimate geniuses working minimum wage jobs because that's all they've been given the tools to achieve. I've been lucky and have managed to get myself into software engineering, but I worked hard and long to get here; took me until the age of 40. Not because I wasn't smart enough to do it at a much younger age, but I had to build up my own resources and support from scratch.

​@mogad Do I know you? What corner were you hiding in watching me when I was 5 that you could claim to know I'm lying? I assure you I'm not. My dad worked as a petroleum engineer when I was that age. He made good money, but he and my mom were terrible with it. I'm not sure where it all went, as I was I was too young to understand at the time. The computer we had was a computer he had for work. According to him, I kept pestering him so he handed me the manual and told me to read it, so I did. I still remember it had little fairy-like creatures drawn in the margins, sprites, because that chapter was discussing graphics, how to produce sprites. I also recall it being the first time I learned about peek and poke; they stuck with me because I thought they were funny and it being a very complex concept for me at the time. My dad lost that job soon after and worked as a handyman/school bus driver from then on, but we still had the computer. I would say I was ignorant, not stupid. The games weren't shit or everyone that played them lied to me. I enjoyed playing them, too. *shrug* I just had no sense of value. I wasn't raised that way. My parents were super conservative evangelical Christians that believed in the evils of money. I think that helped them feel better about never having any.

The fact that losing 17% of your net worth means something totally different depending on how much money you have to start with is one I wish got pointed out more often. For most people, that actually has an effect on what they can afford to buy. For someone with billions of dollars - how is that going to change their day-to-day existence in any material manner?

Not an Elon simp, but there are 3 reasons why I think people are attracted to him. 1) He presents himself as an overly online engineering nerd, something that appeals to a lot of overly online engineering nerds 2) He is part of the reason (not the most important reason) of why Tesla is so successful, and Tesla did give a large kick to the electric car market. 3) SpaceX has created a lot of innovation in the space industry, and is now part of how NASA sends astronauts to space. A lot of online nerds like space shit, so they'll like Elon.

@Stone Blue You can’t take away his reach to others, but you can certainly take it away to you. And I f enough people do it, it makes a difference. Owning Twitter doesn’t automatically make all the users follow you. When Musk can tweet whatever he’s tweeting and impact the stock market, it’s because people are giving him their attention, and their actions are being influenced as a result. In the 21st social media world, your attention translates to money and influence, but regular people are still not appreciating this enough to weaponize it. A lot of people stand to lose a lot of reach from the hide, block, “not interested”, and unfollow buttons.

Just as a note though, having a net worth equal to the GDP of Portugal does not mean he could buy all of Portugal, it means he could pay for all of the goods and services Portugal produces in one year. To compare the difference, the US GDP is about 20 trillion dollars. The US total household net worth is around $150 trillion. That doesnt include business assets, so a person with the GDP of the US in cash wouldnt be close to being able to afford buying the whole US.

I thought of that and that it would be nice to think a company could be bought out for just it's annual revenue. That's not how that works. She also suggested early on with the segment on comprehending big numbers (9:10) that it was (252 x) 1,000 x a million, what "most Americans will ever earn in their lifetime." 40 years making a single million spreads to $25 000 per year. That's no overtime and literally below minimum wage in a dozen States. And she said "will ever earn," i.e., not discounting the kids that will grow up w/a Wendy's paying $20/hour when they hire on. Now maybe that isn't terribly inaccurate b/c the adult dependents of 7-figure earners could all live on nil for earnings as such, though their accountants would know the tax man charges a premium for not diverting cash flow towards those in lower tax brackets. At 13:10, she makes the opposite mistake, one part in over 8 000 was read "point zero-one-two," w/out the %. Lastly, 15:00, "many cases" of average, every-day people should not exclude the many w/out discretionary income, but if a person can save, I'm pretty unequivocal with the idea that building the billionth part of wealth "that he is," i.e., $252, is pretty reasoned (especially true if we are ranging those saving efforts from 2015 through even 2021, when some pretty average people had gotten wealth in government checks an order of magnitude bigger). Not wanting to take the message off center, just a whole lot of exaggeration that didn't need to be their on the piece going after the rich, white man for being flippant but, in effect, unassailable. One more little aside from 18:32. I am pretty sure Chelsea did not learn to code in BASIC to know first-hand that it is easier than Fortran. Tom Kurtz certainly implied it needed to be so, but neither his project nor those math-and-science texts were targeted at kids in the fourth grade. Child Musk was rich and entrepreneurial, to be sure, but those were days when anyone would be grateful for PC DOS and a manual. There were no step-through debuggers, no color-coded, tab-selectable functions, no Dummies guides, and no Google, forums, or YT tutorials. Kids can do this stuff, sure; I could, but I'm still not sure saying that he was really good at a hard thing, really early days--and he kept at it--is actually a dig Only because he had to be financially well-supported to get there.

I actually disagree that we shouldn’t worry as much about Elon Musk buying Twitter. Don’t get me wrong, everything you pointed out are very real issues and I completely agree with your take on things. However, Musk buying Twitter means he gets to control language and information in a world that is already plagued by misinformation. This gives him even more power to control his narrative, influence politicians and policies and move our culture in a direction that would favor the already wealthy elites in our society. I don't feel like 'entrepreneur' is the right term for someone who's simply buying into an idea with little to know consequence if there's failure. "a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit." None of the standards for the term apply to what Musk is doing anymore. The hero worship of him truly baffles me. I don't hate the guy, but I don't get why people rabidly love him either. He's just....a very wealthy guy who has had some good business opportunities. I have a lot of chronic health issues. When I look at people like Musk, all I can think about is how I could get the best medical care and maybe get better if I had just a fraction of his wealth. I wouldn’t have to decide if getting a new bed or new clothes comes first. I’m triple insured do to a disability and I still have to pay for things. Also, neuralink will only turn us into Wallie with possibly worse consequences.

Great vid. Maybe worth also mentioning the importance of social capital in finding funding, i.e. just cause daddy didn't give you money you still got his contacts. That coming from money de-risks ventures even if that money is your daddy's, i.e. most businesses can be successful with enough investment eventually. And finally, that you don't need to be smart if you can afford good professionals and/or have an excellent family lawyer/law firm/account/big 4 firm etc.

There's no shame in aesthetic operations as Chelsea always made it clear she's not against it and she's ok with Botox. I think mentioning the hair transplant adds to the context surrounding his privilege, bc botox is one thing, but surgical transplant is another. Surgery doesn't have the same accessibility as using a Groupon to afford a full syringe at a beauty clinic. It also alludes to the way in which he has cultivated his image and how it plays into meritocracy, since society tends to assign value to appearances -- especially youthfulness. I don't know how much he'd be hero worshipped if he was still balding. Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Gates are often mocked for their dweeby or robotic appearances. However, guys like Mark Cuban, Lukas Walton, Joe Gebbia, Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, Drew Houston, Tom Perrson, and now Elon Musk, are given full "Halo Effect" treatment. Elon took pains to bulk up at the gym (possibly steroids too) and get hair plugs in order to have a Cinderella glow up from dork & wholesome to dark & -handsome- full of himself. Prior to this change, he was often relegated to the basic dweebdom of Silicon Valley. As time progressed, his best compliment was that he was our modern day Tesla -- of course in reality, he's actually credit-stealing Edison. But his change in appearance was what definitely cemented him into now being associated to a real world "Iron Man". This change in characterization from asexual loner genius to philanthropist playboy is so easy to forget, so I'm actually grateful whenever she reminds the audience (and informs any newcomers) that it took money & surgery for him to amass his fanbase.

People may think that he is just a happy go lucky nerd but make no mistake, he has been highly conscious of his image and appearance since the beginning. His first wife wrote about how adamant he was with their personal stylist that he "had to look like a legitimate engineer" insisting on wearing jeans while at work, instead of a constant suit and tie. The mans entire persona has been cultivated for good PR and is a deliberate manipulation. I wish the general public would wake up and recognize that he hasn't cared about the environment or climate change for years now.

I find the comparison to Nikola Tesla really interesting. Obviously, it’s sitting right there seeing as how he owns Tesla, but it gets more interesting when you actually look at Nikola Tesla’s career. He made a lot of really important discoveries that completely revolutionized the field of electrical engineering and technological applications on the industrial and personal scales. That’s mostly in the first half-ish of his career. After that he started looking into basically trying to invent cell phones - texting features in particular. He made the one vital mistake, though, of thinking the signal would have to travel through the Earth itself, rather than through the air. He essentially wasted millions (easily the equivalent of billions by today’s value) of money from investors on creating his massive lab on Long Island and attempting to create this under ground communications network. This drastically decreased his credibility among his contemporaries and made it incredibly difficult for him to continue working as he didn’t actually have much money of his own and therefore had rely on investments from said contemporaries. That’s not to say he wasn’t a brilliant inventor because he absolutely was and even that later “failed” work did have a decent amount of scientifically plausible background. I just thought it was an interesting parallel of praising for successes while completely ignoring the failures. PS: This is based off of a biography I read a while ago which is why it’s relatively vague and not specific. If you know more about this than I do, please just add you knowledge in the replies section rather than coming at me. Thank you!

Think about taxes, most will save at max a few hundred to a few thousand bucks with the tax breaks that are hyped up by the rich and folks in the media, while those folks are saving hundreds of thousands. Most people uphold this system because of the assumption that one day they will win the life lottery and be on the other side of the struggle and then all these things that kept them oppressed and struggling will benefit them. It’s kind of how the S corp was hyped up on small business owners but its really just a way for the rich to avoid taxes by giving themselves a salary, the money small businesses save on an s corp just ends up being spent on either accounting or time spent meeting the irs deadlines.

@@strayiggytv idk who first said that, but I remember one of the first TFD vids I watched, and when Chelsea said that or something to that effect, it was like I was hit with a massive wave, I had the *I gotta sit down and rub my forehead to process this* kinda moment. It explains so much about how people in my family “hustle” and “grind.” I am a college student working full-time, and the parent I live with pushes me to take the max credit hours, and to find a second job….even if that somehow makes me a millionaire let alone a billionaire, the trade off is poor quality life and a bad relationship to balancing work and life. LITERALLY on my two days off (not the weekend, I am a cook) I make an effort to make sure the least amount of house work and errands are on my plate so I can go to the gym, go see a movie, take the family dogs to the park, meet up with a friend et cetera. Those five days I work are long, and I am so tired after, but once my parent saw my pay stub and laughed at how little I made. They said to get a better job…..well that is why I am trying to get my undergrad but that is expensive and you are only not giving me enough money to cover tuition for a year. There is no way to win with people who think they are *temporarily a pre billionaire*

I attribute the most of Musk's success-in-the-public-eye due to the very fortunate timing of Steve Jobs's death-Apple (and Jobs himself) invested a ton in fostering the cult-of-personality of a bold visionary who dares to dream big. The bewildered masses bought it hook, line and sinker and once Jobs died they started looking for a replacement. Along comes Musk, less than a year later, promising super-visionary bold (and stupid, and unfeasible...) projects like the Hyperloop and from that point on people found a new Digital Messiah who can do no wrong, willing to excuse any, and I mean *any* brain-dead thing this man produces.
