Tyler, the flexible tube is called by the railroad as a " glad hand". It's used on the end of train cars to pass air from car to car to set the brakes. One on each end of the car, hook together and air is pumped through them to remove the brakes. Unlike car brakes, where you apply the brake and a brake shoe is pressed against the brake drum to slow your car down or stop; a rail car without air in the brakes, the shoes are pressed against the wheels. For the car( rail) to be easily moved, the brakes have to be pumped up to release the shoes from the wheels. Air is transferred from car to car by those rubber hoses. The engine which pulls the cars have a big air pump and provides the air for each car to remove all the brakes before the engine can begin to move them on the rails. The square door is the journal box door from trucks which hold the train car wheels and axels from train cars who had brass bearings before roller bears began to be used. These wheel bearings had to have oil and grease applied to them from cotton waste which sat in square boxes and a hole was in the backside of the journal box to allow oil to drip upon the brass bearings to lube the axels. That lid you found came from a journal box and was held on with a pin. To apply oil and heavy grease( in the summer months) , one lifted the lid and poured or in case of grease, a special spoon was used to the cotton waste material in the journal boxes on each side of a freight car. 4 journal boxes per side per car. Once oil or grease was replenished in the journal boxes, the lid was closed and with a spring held shut to keep road dust and grime from fouling the bearings by getting in the lube oil or grease. That lid may have come off a car from vibration and these were used on cars from 1890 through the mid '70's or until sealed roller bearings were mandated on all freight cars. How do I know this without working for a railroad? Got 3 different friends who do currently work as engineers( train drivers) and maintenance of way for Norfork Southern and CSX as well as I'm a railroad photographer for more than 50 years.

Missed you Tyler, hope you are okay. Love your sayings, “ shut your lips”. The big companies are worse than individuals, these poor animals, to know this and see an innocent deer drinking it. Problem, fines are so little, if they really follow thru with big companies, that factories dumping do not care. If you closed down production and really hurt their bottom line, they will take notice. 8:28 when you caught wheel, round thing in water to right of it. The hook reminds me of front of sleigh, So happy to see you and watch your video,
