Sea fishing on the Cornwall coast can offer some wonderful species to catch if you adapt what you are doing. This time of year you really have to make the most of any opportunity you can. Here I explore areas of reef on the drift with lures and float fished baits to find fish for my family to eat. A difficult day means I need to search around but find some incredible fish!! This video was filmed 2 days before the end of the recreational bass season.
Don't forget to check out our sister channel ‪@thefishlockerworkshop‬ for helpful reviews and videos.
Here are links to some of the fishing tackle I used in this video. I hope it helps.

People really give you a hard time about it watching the video weeks/months later? Here in Oregon we have salmon/steelhead regulations that require a PHD in Law just to understand, and I don't often see people whining about closed seasons (our quota-based system can open/close multiple times within a "season"). Kinda interesting, honestly. Do you have a physical address we can send things to? I want to send you a couple of better descenders we use here often. A shallow-er water one, and a deep water one. Because it's Christmas and there's a better mouse trap to be had.

Thinking that you found a legal transgression on John's channel is ridiculous. Anyone that has watched his videos knows he is an ethical person that cares about sustainable fisheries and goes above and beyond the regulations. This may interest John and others, I read a study on fish swim bladder piercing to mitigate barotrauma. The findings were only about 25% survived the procedure. Now, this may crazy but I have an idea, fish compression chambers. On background, I worked on commercial dive boats and had to be certified in first responder nursing trauma specific to diving. I was trained to demand the initial lead on care in directing patients to appropriate decompression facilities and expertise. These fish are not just suffering from buoyancy control swim bladder extension, the gasses dissolved in their body tissue expands when brought to the surface, like divers who get "the bends". Again, sounds crazy but deep water fish could be put in compression chambers and lowered down in them to where they were taken from.
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker Жыл бұрын
It is a subject I have given some serious thought to in the past. Now I do triage them when they get to the boat. Some I know are not going to survive, others like this wrasse had plenty of fight and the gas dropped straight out of him. The descender gives them the best chance. 👍🏻
@hubrisnaut
@hubrisnaut Жыл бұрын
@@TheFishLockerThe descender seems to be the best procedure available for anglers for now. I wouldn't wait to employ it. Do it immediately. One of the interventions on a diver that comes up to fast and is mildly suffering from the bends is to send them back down as quickly as possible and bring them up at a standard rate that allows for decompression. I am just brainstorming on possibilities. It will result in lost fish but, maybe a calculator or rule of thumb that determines the safest rate of assent from a given depth. Expanded gas in the swim bladder is the visible sign, dissolved gasses that expands in the blood and tissue is unseen. I wasn't worried about my divers unless they told me they were going deeper than 30 feet. I was adamant they followed proper assent procedure beyond that. I worked with skilled divers who assured me. The deepest working dives we accomplished were at 130 feet. A full tank of ambient air lasted 10-12 minutes at that depth accounting for decompression intervals upon assent. I considered other gas mixes but never got that far before I moved on.

Hi John, another great vid, and well done for a great Bass catch. I think all the fish must be in Cornwall at the moment, I was out on my boat from Plymouth on the 29th as well - and not so much as a bite !!! But that is fairly normal 😅

In all fairness, you did spike that bass first😁 Enjoyable as always.👍 After watching through a lot of your older videos, i understand that the winter season is pretty "dead", ever thought about going to Norway and fish for "skrei"? Its migrating Atlantic cod, not to be confused for coastal cod as they are totally different populations.(DNA and appearance differentiate quite a bit) Skrei has a maximum weight around 50KG, more commonly 10-20KG, anything above 30KG is fairly rare. Costal cod maxes out at about 15KG, rare above 10KG. Season is February. to April, location: Lofoten, Northern Norway.

I am aware of them as a fish. Never caught one though. If I’m honest I don’t really want to go to Norway when it’s winter. 🤣🥶🥶🥶🥶

I definitely understand wanting a larger fish. As you said you was going out for some freezer fillets. And with two smaller but legal Pollock one bass that you sent back. If I was going for freezer fillets they would have been coming home with me.

Looks like a bit of a swell came in during the day. Probably some okay waves to surf at the beaches. You should get out there, it's quite a good time. A good day out despite not getting a pollock, that lovely bass and wrass more than compensated you though. I know that I've said this before but back in the 1950s and 60s we had a completely different approach. We'd have kept those two smaller bass and released the big one. Way back then there weren't any size limits for sea fish or closed seasons. Hope that you got to collect James on time. That fish will taste lovely, I'm jealous.

Interesting comment about fish taking their energy or increasing their energy from moving water. Have you heard of Victor Schauberger? His work on the dynamic properties of water is interesting and stemmed from his fascination and studies as to how fish can swim upstream and even swim up cascades of fast moving water as salmon do when they return to their natal rivers to spawn.
