I am new to the flat-top community and so excited to learn more from you! This may have already been commented about, since I am watching this over a year since posting, but those Blackstone spatulas and the other heavier options you showed would be useful for people with disabilities or medical conditions. I randomly twitch in my arms and hands so weighted utensils and other kitchen supplies help counteract the shaking with their weight so I can almost work as if I did not have any twitching. I have had a significant reduction in the amount of food that has been flung across my kitchen since getting weighted utensils and such!

That's some good info Neil. I have the wooden handled spatulas. I leave them on the griddle top frequently and and for periods of time. They have never gotten too hot on the exposed medal between the handle or the rivets. I suppose if left long enough that heat will eventually transfer, but again, it's never been an issue with mine. When I ordered them I never thought about the squared off blades with the sharp corners. After a couple uses, I did filed them round at the corners to prevent gouging the flat top. Another thing with the wood handles, I mineral oil them just like you do your wood cutting boards. Don't want them to dry out and crack. So why bother with wood? I like the natural look and feel. Thanks for another informative video.
@TheFlatTopKing2 жыл бұрын
Thats a great tip. I oil my wooden spoon as well. Funny about the heat. The one i have will flat out burn ya if not carfeull. I threw it away yesterday but i kept it just for this video. Would be cool to have a hand carved spatula from someone. I think it would be neat as hell.

For sure, the comfortability is the main thing for me and the size is important because of what I'm cooking. If I need to flip or fold something like an omelette, then I may want a longer or wider spatula. Ultimately, it's all a matter of preference and it's all trial and error. I like my Blackstone spatula with a chopper or dough cutter. Happy GRIDDLING and thanks for the video.

I purchased a 36" Blackstone in December of 2021. I had already watched a ton of flat top videos and I knew you recommended the New Star Food Service spatulas. I wasn't crazy about the white handles and they may have been out of stock at that time, so I purchased the deluxe set of Blackstone spatulas while I was picking up the griddle. The set I have was 3 spatulas. 2 14" and 1 shorter wider spatula, along with a large plastic bottle and a scraper. The 2 long spatulas suck and I only use the short wide spatula for smash burgers, although I have a bacon press. So, I looked on Amazon and they had your spatula in black. So I ordered 2 of them and they are fantastic. Much easier to get under eggs and roll up an omelette The Black stone spatulas stain and are hard to clean. These seem like they are better quality steel, but flexible. The Blackstone spatulas are not flexible at all!

I bought my Blackstone spatulas a couple of years ago for my grill because everything else was too small and flimsy. They work well on my griddle, but I do have occasions like with eggs where they can be difficult to manipulate 'em, so I've been wondering which thin spatulas I should get. I guess I have some ideas now. I also got a smooth-surfaced 6" round cast iron press for doing smashburgers. It works great! With just a short preheat, no paper needed! I just smash down for 8-10 seconds, give it a twist and off it comes. I can always tell when it gets too cold though. I end up with shredburgers! I'm a little late to the show, but great info nonetheless! Thanks!

Great video and lots of good stuff to consider. Of course it all comes down to personal preference. For me, I don't like the flexible spatulas. I really like those Blackstone "shovels" that you have there. I like that they don't bend, I like the handle. I see the beveled edge as a compromise between a thin spatula and the thick metal of the BS. My advice to everyone is to try out a few. See what you like. Take all the stuff in this video into consideration and keep what works best for you. They aren't all that expensive and you may find that different spatulas are better for different things in your hand.

Thanks for the video. So I purchased a similar "gold standard" spatula set from amazon (14pc set for $30) and a set from Wal-Mart (Blackstone Original 5-Piece Griddle Accessory Tool Kit for $21.97). I wanted so much to like the set from amazon however I foresee one problem. My knuckles will hit my Blackstone flat top grill (that small 1 inch lip on the front) when holding the spatula. However if I use the Blackstone spatulas they will not touch...thus preventing potential skin burn. Wish the Blackstone spatulas had a more rounded end though. Have you tried using your "gold standard" on your Blackstone to see if they touch the front lip of the griddle?

First comment, I have enjoyed every video I have watched from you and your wife! I have learned pretty much everything I know about griddling courtesy of you! Second comment. Before I retired, I was 10+ years involved in lean manufacturing and employee/user ergonomics. Everyone of us, and you and your wife are perfect examples of this, are different heights. Our physical height, the length of our arms, (and whatever_______, fill in the blank space), will figure into what that individual considers 'comfortable'. You, being taller than her, will most likely prefer a handle with a steeper angle, as opposed to your wife, being not as tall, would probably prefer a handle with a slightly shallower angle. Very much of what we use, and have available, is more or less built around a 36" work height. Short people are forced to reach higher, (and 'out of position'), while taller people may be forced to squat down a bit. The angle of the spatula handle will be important if the user doesn't know enough to just simply bend the handle to what is comfortable for that person. Its now past my bedtime, so, if needed, we can continue this conversation tomorrow! I've had my 3 brewski's for today. Have a good night!

@@TheFlatTopKing Just for grins and giggles, have you and your wife stand comfortably, straight upright, let your elbows rest comfortably at your waist line, bring your forearms up to a comfortable, horizontal position, palms down, no cheating here, be honest with yourself. Measure that distance to the floor and subtract 3 inches. That remaining distance is generally pretty close to what that individual will be most comfortable with whatever work/(cooking) surface height they're standing in front of. You may discover that at the end of the day your shoulders, back, and neck are tired and sore because you have to bend over or contort yourself down to use your griddle. Your wife, on the other hand, may find that she is having to stretch her back up a bit and raise her shoulders, and turn her wrist down somewhat to use the spatula, this plays into the thought of the angle of the spatula handle and how she may need to contort her wrist and shoulders to accommodate a particular spatula. I'm using the spatula as my primary example, but I've also needed to modify my method of dicing/chopping/mincing stuff. Working at the standard counter height is brutal painful!!!!! My neck and shoulders have no mercy on me!. My wife gave me a craft tray that I can put my cutting boards on, it adds about 3" height, and it makes all the difference in the world to my comfort when I'm dicing/slicing/chopping. A few bits and pieces to aren't a problem, but if I have to munch thru a bunch of stuff, I'm left hurting! Test for yourself what I've suggested! The results may surprise you!

My personal preference is a thin stiff but flexible blade that shows no sign of edge wear. I just do not find that thick tapered edge blades work to clean the surface. The rounded corners are good. The Mercer Hells handle have excellent steel and the edges hold up but at $30 to$40 each are certainly a splurge and not all of them stand with the handle off the griddle surface. The edges on my the Blackstone spatulas did not hold with use for me.

Thanks for the lesson. Everything you said makes a lot of sense. But I think you're missing one..kinda. It's called different thing and similar to your long silicone one. I know it as a fish turner or a fish spatula. Long and very thin and flexible. And it very well could be used more on bbq grill. I see a lot of chefs on TV use them. It help keep the skin on fish when cooking them I guess. I'll see if I can find mine or get some pics of the web and share send them to you or post them on your FB page.
