Thanks, I landed at Quito, the old runway, and it was during a severe downpour,at night, very scary. We later heard that one flight before us and several after had aborted and gone elsewhere. I have landed at Kathmandu quite a few times, it is often smogged/fogged in, you fly very close to the houses either side, often scary, but I went on to Lukla 4 times, now that is scary. Good ending no-one killed, any landing you walk away from is good.

So.. the problem at Kathmandu airport was that as of 2015 they did not support an ILS landing? (that's from a previous comment below). Seems this should be standard at any substantial airport that often experiences fog / bad visibility and has high mountains close by. Hope they have fixed this issue by now. Of course the pilot looks to have made an error also - but he does have to land at some point, wonder what his fuel situation was...
@goytabr2 жыл бұрын
ILS should be standard, but you're talking about one of the poorest nations in the world, where resources, financial and other, are scarce and disputed among many pressing needs. They simply couldn't afford it. Yet I believe ILS was installed there years later.

As for the Turkish crew: imagine losing your license and career over a decision. Then make your decision thinking this. It becomes so clear when you think like this. "How can I justify my actions?" - such a simple thought process to use when in command. The Quito accident doesn't upset me as much, because I am always very cognizant of the runway conditions reported vs what I sent performance for through our landing information. How about this one for a second: at 9200' elevation - you are doing 200kts at just 150kts indicated. For many aircraft - this is above the maximum tire speed, let alone a hard touch down. Be mindful of your tire speed and ground speed at high or hot airports. Denver, Bogota, Quito and the likes all demand high care in reference to your speed. You carry a lot of it and it takes a long time to get it and get rid of it.

I've learned about other incidents similar to the Iberia flight's. Why the imperative to interrupt the ILS approach and switch to a visual? ILS systems are designed to get you all the way to touchdown. Was the ILS glideslope inappropriate for the aircraft's landing weight? And as far as Kathmandu is concerned, why is there still no ILS there? PAPI and high intensity runway lights help, but lack of ILS is a significant problem. I note that before 1997, there was no radar there either.
