In response to the question regarding Japanese beetles plant white begonias around the base as the white begonias put off a chemical which paralysis the beetles. Only the white begonias will work. However the beetles can/will still find their way and my mother used to say say sometimes one must be cruel to be kind and you may find yourself taking more drastic “steps”. Also I use a 4 to 1 mix of water to mouth wash to spray on my rose for black spot and for aphids and this also helps with beetles. Just discovered you and so happy to watch another garden inspired “mavin.” Sadly I’m in moggy, boggy Wilmington, Delaware, USA with serious Rose envy. Bravo to you! Beautiful garden, but moreover, many thanks for sharing your gift as a natural teacher and inspiring others to find joy and wonder in their own gardens.

Georgie..thanks so much. This, and your Christmas Garland episode gave me such wistful feelings. My Husband and I, Gay, together 39 years had a large center hall Georgian revival home here in Philadelphia. The stair was quite imposing and I would make garlands every Christmas for it and the fireplace mantels. I wish I had known about the use of the string!!..So much easier. I put in borders of Austin roses..one of my favorites was Abraham Darby. The Austin roses were not bothered too.much by the Japanese beetles.. the tea roses, however !! Would prune in March and feed at the end of the month and watch in wonder at the blooms. So thank you again for bringing back so many memories.

Ah, wondered about Japanese beetles, as they are dreadful here in the US. Garlic spray, soapy spray, not much works on the little devils if you're gardening organically. I have just a couple of heirloom roses that I try my best to defend every year. But, by mid-season their leaves look like lace, sadly. When the beetles are gone in Fall, I do get a smaller second flush of blooms before the killing frost hits.

Lovely roses. Love mulch and compost for plants. In my area, central Texas 8b, we need some acidifier for.help with alkaline soil and lots of compost and mulch. I've mentioned compost and mulch already, because if you dig down 5 inhes you hit limestone. No dig here is entirely sensible.

Hi lovely Georgie. In your rose workshop i thought you'd said you plant in an 18" zig zag but here you say a 12". Just trying to work out how many to get fit an 8*1.2 meter bed. Was thinking about 28. Thank you x

I should have said 18" here too x 18" is right or even further apart if you are going to cut less and let the roses grow out to their natural size without harvesting as hard as I do x

Thank you so much Georgie - very informative! I was taking notes and then the pen ran out which started a mad search of the kitchen at 6 am. The bouquet is stunning - as always. I'd just love to know the variety of those grasses you were using - I have no idea about grasses or what is best to grow. I'm excited that my first rose of the season is about to open - DA Ambridge rose which I planted as a bare-root during our NZ winter. She's been putting on a phenomenal amount of growth. The grass I have no idea of the name but it came from knoll nurseries in Wimborne and they have an excellent website so you may recognise it there x

Im in the US and have those grasses but dont know the name. However, it is common so if you go now to a garden center, those tufts are visible so it’s a great time to shop for the name

The grasses are Miscanthus sinensis. You have them in many different varieties. Pink, red, white ones. Drooping and upwardly. Very tall and relatively short. Excellent plant, for cutting and in your borders!

Aren’t Japanese beetle the same as Rose chaffers here in UK? We have them in Devon and they do munch on the petals GITs!

not the same - rose chaffers are native to the UK so while possibly annoying they have predators and don't cause the same kind of damage that invasive Japanese beetles do in the USA x

Of the roses you mentioned are any faster growing? the season is so short here in Canada. Spent some of my childhood in Bath/Monkton Combe - miss the temperate climes! I don’t - black spot develops slowly through the season and is worse for some than the others but it doesn’t kill and mine is a wildlife friendly garden first so no intervention x
