Fly Tying for Beginners a Cicada with Jim Misiura

Cicada don't fly very well and many of them land on the water, prompting even the largest fish to take them from the surface.

I used silver bead chain sharpied red and black foam, but I love the tan foam contrasting the red under body. Thanks!

Nice tie as always Jim. I think mono eyes would also work great with this fly.

John you can probably modify this a bit, maybe a darker foam with orange eyes. As it is I think it will do well. That 17 year Cicada is going to com out all down the east coast. I'm looking forward to using something as big as a house to catch trout on. Good Luck in your neck of the woods. Jim

Your right mono eyes would work. you would have to usse 50lb then melt. they do have big eyes. Thanks Jim

The tan is good but I think the black foam is more realistic. I depends what cicada is hatching I suppose.

What brand and kind of eyes are they? Where could I get them?

I bought these beads from Michael's they are Plastic you can probably find similar product at any craft store. I'm using plastic so that they don't sink the fly. Also you can tie this fly in a darker shad foam.

Hi Jim, Got lucky here, with your cicada pattern. The Weather Channel had an article on the cicada hatching in the south. I know the cicada takes 16 years from nymph in the ground to adult hatch, but have no idea if they are all over the USA or just in certain areas, or if different year cycles. A friend talked about fishing a cicada hatch on the Green River several years back, but didn't know anything about them other than they are loud. Do you know if there's a source to check about U.S. areas of hatches? Where are you fishing & have you had luck with the hatch & pattern? I would imagine you can go to Google to find out where and when the hatch will occur. I know it was supposed to happen here in Pa . a couple years ago and didn't happen in my area. The last time I saw them here was more than 20 years ago. Your right about the 17 year Cicada. When you tie them use the color foam that best matches rhe bugs near you.
