No one is an expert on the tarot. It meets us where we are and leads us forward; it is always deepening as we are. I've been at it over fifty years and will be a student all my life. Nothing keeps my interest more than art and tarot because they are always beautiful and inspiring and healing and FUN. "Humbled is not the same thing as self effacement." The tarot is always humbling, and I love that about it. Great advice about daily draws; curiosity is always a prerequisite for learning. Again, I'm grateful that my first deck came without a box or a book - I didn't know what these cards were. Curiosity taught me their worth. "The cards drawn always answer the question." You are so very articulate and I appreciate your videos.

Tom, you made me feel so much better about my tarot practice in just one hour. In fact, in the first 10 mins, I already felt better: just your simple reminder that it takes a while to get good, and we don’t all have to be experts from the beginning ‘or else’. I’m also always so hard on myself, and was losing interest just bumbling along on my own, being my own worst critic, feeling like a failure. I’m going to watch all your other workshops now. You’re a born mentor. Thank you 🙏🏻

Wow, I came across this channel by accident but of course it was not an accident. I needed to hear this. I have been using tarot for over 20 years on and off, (more off) because I just couldn’t intuitively “know” the cards like other people seemed to. Most advice I got was that I had to let the cards tell the story and the person I was reading for shouldn’t have to tell me the question for me to give them valuable insights. That never felt “right” to me but because I felt so much less experienced than them I just believed I was not able to read properly. So I kept putting away the cards. Hearing tonight that the question is paramount and our job as readers is to spend some time with the question and ensure it’s the one the questioner wants answered started to crack open a door. When you used the example of the 4 of swords as the answer to the cheating boyfriend question I felt like the sky just opened up and sent a big sunray in my direction. Wow. That really resonated. Of course I couldn’t understand the message of the cards - I didn’t know what I was there for if I didn’t work to specifically answer the question. I am so inspired I will be getting out my cards again and looking at the process in a new way. Thank you thank you thank you. This is the first of your videos I have watched and I will be back for more!

I wish I had heard someone discuss #10 eight years ago when I first started with tarot. All the extra associations I just could not understand how or when of if I should consider them answering my questions. I sort of did this meandering through this book and that to try and integrate it all. Eventually I just burned out and picked up a TDM deck out of curiosity and readings became a lot clearer. Now when I pick up a RWS deck I'm not nearly as overwhelmed or even concerned...Nice. I hope this video reaches millions. Thank you for keeping it real. ✍

Are we ever not students? There is always something new to learn and to see in this practice we do. I’m drawn to you as a person because of your thirst for teaching and learning. It’s infectious. My newest student is one of my grandchildren. She amazes me with the intuitive way she has about her and she offers amazing questions when she feels stumped that open up real work that leads us both into discoveries. She teaches me every time we work together which is almost daily. This time with her is not only an open discussion about tarot but it is relationship building between us in ways that take my breath away. I am comfortable with reading. I’ve been in it over 40 years. But knowing it all..? No. I approach it like I know very little. I think where we are now is where we are now is perfect. I feel like when I’m reading I’ve entered a meeting where the querent myself and the cards are all active participants in getting to the bottom of the subject at hand... the question and it’s answer. Have you seen the NOLA tarot? It’s no pictures only keywords and it’s remarkable to work with. And the opposite deck that shakes it up is the Transparent Tarot by Emily Carding. (best read with a light Box). If you don’t have these decks... I’d love to send them to you. 😘

Tom this video is a gem. I’m a year and a half into my tarot journey, and your insights here are extremely encouraging and help with keeping the right perspective. Keeping the reading question focused and context driven are important alignment tools. Your suggestions for daily draws may help me make those draws more beneficial for me (instead of just frustrating!). I just got your book Tarot on Earth this week. I am so excited to explore my pip decks finally! Your wit, wisdom, humor, and honesty help me shake off some of my anxieties about reading. Thanks so much!

Be back to finish but thanks for the sound advice. I think my excitement with Tarot is the peace and the learning. From day one, my intentions aren't to be a tarot master, I want to master tarot for me and maybe, down the line, those who seek me out for guidance (family, friends). Tarot has expanded my knowledge of history, opened my interest in art...anyway, I'll be back to check it the rest later.

You are so right. I started reading Tarot at the age of 18 (I am 53 now). Initially I could not 'get into it' and as a result shelved the cards for a while, they would make an appearance from time to time with me reading from the little white book for myself only, also, at that time as my intuition seemed to have 'got up and gone'. I retired 5 years ago due to cruddy health issues and decided to devote my time to tarot. It was the best thing I have ever done. I feel that as long as I am on this side of the grass, I will always be learning where Tarot is concerned as there are just so many layers to it.

Great video! And I did watch to the end. I don't agree with your approach 100% of the time, but I learn from you because your approach is so consistent and so good. It's really cool to get some insight into the experiences, frustrations, dead ends, and a-ha moments that informed your approach along the way. I just started doing daily pulls this year. I almost never ask a specific question when I do a daily draw but I've been getting valuable insights from it 98% of the time. The way I've come to understand this is that daily card pulls, though often recommended as a beginner/Tarot 101 practice, are, in my experience, more of a Tarot 201 practice (or maybe even 301). Because the only reason they work for me is that I already have a strong foundation of the basic/core meanings of the cards. This allows me to jump off of that and see the subtle variations of meaning as they come up in everyday life vs. in terms of answering a "big question." Sometimes these meanings line up perfectly with the core meanings I learned, at other times they offer a subtle twist on those meanings. This would have been SO CONFUSING when I was first starting out ~15 years ago when I was still trying to learn the core meanings. Does that mean that no one ever finds that daily pulls are an absolutely essential, functional part of their early tarot learning? No. But I can see how for a lot of people it ends up being frustrating and an obstacle, rather than an asset in the learning process. Right now, as a "Tarot 201" practice for me, it's exciting, because it's helping me build a book of my own "personal, everyday" meanings for the cards that I can layer/add to those core meanings I spent all those years sitting with and learning. But the main value of it is a spiritual one-for all the years I've spent practicing meditation and various other spiritual practices, given that I am a thought-driven, meaning-seeking person, I am finding that pulling a daily card is doing more to help me sink into and appreciate my daily life than any other spiritual practice I've had. It shows that every day matters; every day has something to teach, even if it's just helping me understand my own personal patterns. It allows me to sink in to being the fool more and to more deeply embrace the experience of being a student of life.

Tom! I loved this video! Thank you for creating it. I have a request for a part two--an elaboration on the need to construct good questions, how to handle basic questions, and what to do when people who haven't taken the time to think of one. I've worked on Keen.com as an empath for many years. Every, single day I get the, "Is my ex coming back?" "When he is going to call?" "Is he cheating?" kind of questions. They always drive me crazy. I want to be more understanding of their current experience, but often find myself immediately frustrated by those questions and the reading gets off to a rough start. About six months ago, I begun seriously delving into tarot. When I started doing free tarot readings, I thought the questions would be deeper. They're not. My natural inclination is to not just give a yes/no answer, but to give a deeper explanation and advice they never, really, asked for. But after watching your video, I'm wondering if I should change my method and either just answer the question directly or ask the person for the question behind the question (such as "Is my ex coming back" is really "How do I get over my ex?" or "Am I going to be alone for the rest of my life?") Thoughts?

Yes, I got through the entire video and I loved every minute of it! You are always such an insightful, entertaining, and empowering teacher... “Your path is the right path.” I love conversations about different systems and what works or doesn’t work for who because it’s interesting to me... but the idea that something someone reads doesn’t work for me means it’s “wrong” just blows my mind! Like you say “does it answer the question?” Then yes it’s the right path for me or them and that should be that... and the freedom you encourage to just play in the sandbox is always appreciated.

Fantastic video - thank you for all of your hard work and generosity in sharing your knowledge and wisdom! I've been reading tarot for myself for a million years, and I was happy and content doing so, but Spirit has more recently called me to become a professional reader. So far, it has been an incredibly challenging and rewarding journey, and I am always keen to learn and grow and improve. Reading for others is such a different experience from reading for myself. I've always had this deep, synchronistic and beautiful personal relationship with the tarot, but it's been quite unstructured and intuitive. When I read for others, especially strangers, you're right - they are coming for answers, and that can be really intimidating. Staying centered on the question and trusting the cards to answer the questions is such a simple, but key concept. Thank you for this, I know it is going to help me in my professional readings to serve the querents, and to feel more focused, grounded and confident. Also, I'm loving the magnificent, kingly beard you're rocking!

I don't think it's garbage to say anyone that the answer lies within them when that's literally the whole truth. especially in a world addicted to the "answer" or the "wholeness" having to come from an outside source it's a healing thing to say as much as people need to hear it

As a reader who is still relatively new and eager to learn, so much of this was insightful and honest. On a personal note I found you speaking on your system preferences to be so interesting, as well as your comparison of Thoth and RWS. I tend to shy away from Marseille and have recently branched out to Thoth and feel like it is the natural fit I wish I had during the years I spent with RWS; so hearing what about RWS appeals to you and the pictorial element versus the key words was fascinating. While I don't have a background in theatre, I did study English Literature in school and I do find that I resonate with you as a content creator when you reference your writing! Sometimes when I watch or rather listen to your videos.. I am left with so much to say.. I am grateful for what you share, your emotional intelligence shines INCREDIBLY and beautifully... It is sensual... ( I sound like a crazy fan 😭😭😭). You are not just a human.. You are an experience.. I will be listening for as long as you desire to speak. I shall read for as long as you choose to write. PS: Keep stepping on toes. I know you make folks uncomfortable and am so here for it🤣🤣 #youthebomb

I think of tarot as a languaje and each system as a dialect.. so i have learnt the three systems st the same time. Learning the historial meanings, the evolution, differences and similarities. I studied rhe minors numerologically. I think this way It was easier than learning one system and then changing to another.

Re:Marseille..i was like that...bleah, those cards are ugly...now i have like 10 or so traditional TDM and a handful of pip decks...now im like "they're beautiful"! Especially the historical ones...never thought id like them. And re the context, i was taught that way on how important context is, and bring it back to the question, so i didnt have to re learn this concept. Thanks, brilliant video as always. (And tell me you read ALL those books..bows down)..oh..and the learning. Yes! Keep going.
