As requested: a quick and chaotic little look at the difference between "marseille," "marseille-style," "scenic pips" and "pip pips."

I'm so grateful this video exists! I've seen 'pips' being mentioned a bunch of places, but been too nervous to ask what it means. Thank you for helping this newbie learn, I'll definitely subscribe to learn more. And I would love to hear your take on RWS vs Thoth/Crowley style decks/systems, but I understand if you don't have the time or interest.

Oh, thanks so much! I'm glad this was helpful. And thank you for watching! The Thoth/RWS question is great. I'm not really all that well-versed in the Crowley system. I've always loved the art, but I'm always been kind of turned off by Crowley and his...you know. STUFF. But I may make this the year I learn more about it. I didn't include it here because I mostly didn't feel like I had the experience to talk about it...but maybe soon!

Good morning, Tom! Because of you, I've become much more interested in Marseilles and pip decks. They really are rather liberating, aren't they? It's funny. Last night I asked myself, what's the difference between Marseilles and pip decks? I pulled the decks I have that could be one or the other. I do have the CBD Tarot de Marseilles, and the Tarot de Maria Celia. Then I looked at my other pip-style decks: Keymaster, Light and Shadow, and Del Toro. I'm really digging the pip style more and more. Anyway, I'll stop babbling. Thanks for the video and the peek at those decks. I'm considering the Visconti Sforza and the Trionfi Dell Luna. Have a great day!

I really enjoyed that. A while back I was really confused by the difference between Marseilles and Pip decks and I wish I'd seen your video back then. Even now that I know the difference I loved watching and looking at the comparisons between the cards. Thanks for sharing!

If I'm remembering correctly, that would be the Sheridan-Douglas Tarot.

Hi Tom! Yes, it is old information, but you presented it in such a clear and concise way that is very easy to understand. In my opinion, a much needed video! I’m curious to why you didn’t include the Thoth deck. I consider the Thoth and the Rosetta to be pip decks as well as being “Thoth” decks. In contrast, the Sun and Moon and the Tabula Mundi are “Thoth” decks, but not pip decks. Your thoughts? Also, I’d love to hear what you have to say (a new video, perhaps?) about reading the different systems. While I can appreciate the difference between the RWS and the Thoth systems, I actually prefer to merge the two systems together in terms of card meanings, creating a bridge from the meaning of the 4 of Pents (for example) in the RWS to its meaning in the Thoth, finding the common ground. My readings feel more “fine tuned” and I also noticed a very positive response from my clients. I’m guessing most would frown upon incorporating these meanings when reading Marseille, but I think the images on the marseille pips have a lot to say and those can be bridged back to the meanings in the other two systems also. What’s your take on it?

Thanks so much!!! I appreciate that! In terms of Thoth, I didn't include it primarily because I don't know much about it. I remember having a copy years ago when I started reading, but I never delved into it. And it seems to have its own system, so I didn't feel I could speak to it accurately. I've always loved the art in that deck, but I'm not a big fan of Crowley... but I know now that there are a handful of books on that deck that are worth reading--so maybe this is the year I'll start exploring that deck more closely. But the art--Lady Frieda Harris... that art is gorgeous. It's one of the most beautiful sets of art I've ever seen for tarot!

Tom Benjamin The art is what pulled me in. It’s such a clear reader for me and I think it’s because it’s a bit more pip-ish. However, I’m now falling through the Marseille rabbit whole, I am really loving the freedom it gives and the decks are so, so beautiful! And I thought I was done buying decks for a while... “sigh” 😂😂😂

Have you, or will you, do a video on the advantages of using a pip deck? I've only ever seen the argument that situational pips are better because pip decks are "too hard." What is the specific advantage of *not* having an illustration? I'm really interested in hearing people's thoughts on this but i cant seem to find any!
@thefoolsjournal

I think I have at some point, but I would do another. Honestly, the major advantage for me is that I don't have to deal with the picture "telling" me what the card means. So when I see the three of swords, for example, I don't have to talk about a broken heart, say. I can use other systems if the reading calls for it. That's kind of the main advantage for me. But it's really just a matter of preference. I use both, depending on my mood.

@@thefoolsjournal thank you :) I feel like the pip cards do have a wider range for interpretation, as you said you aren't restricted by the picture on the card. I'm feeling the draw. :)

Thankyou Tom you explained that well One question that has me puzzled does pip stand for anything ?
@thefoolsjournal

I don't think it does. From what I can tell it's a word for the dots on dice, which comes from a word for "seed."

Thanks for a very thought provoking video. I wonder, might there be room to think in terms of "Marseille evolution" tarot decks, and would encompass the classic Marseilles from Noblet to Conver, but also the Besancons, the Gumppenbergs, right down to things like Marshmallow, Pointner, Tarot Noir, and Trionfi della Luna? Think of the gorgeous endless arguments over what to include and what not to!
