This man is one of the most influential people that has ever lived. He has given more to the English language than anyone and everyone should know his story. Think of what he's done...he freed the minds of the common man, allowed the discussion of religion and laws to all. He really did change history. Thankyou William tyndale x

Precisely what did Tyndale "give to the English language"?! New words?! New rules of grammar?! As best as can be determined he TRANSLATED text into the English language as it existed at that time. If not, the English speaking people of that time would have had difficulty comprehending the product of Tyndale's work. Please tell us the story of what Tyndale "gave to the English language" and, more importantly, how he educated the people re those 'gifts'.

@@trueaussie9230 It's estimated that 75-90% of the King James Bible came directly from the Tyndale/Coverdale Bible. The following is just a short list of some of the phrases that we still use today from these translations: Let there be light Forbidden fruit By the sweat of your brow Ashes to ashes, dust to dust Am I my brother’s keeper? As old as Methuselah Fire and brimstone Philistine Land of milk and honey An eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth Golden calf Scapegoat Man does not live by bread alone Apple of my eye A man after my own heart How the mighty have fallen Put words in one’s mouth Be a man Jezebel Put your house in order Nothing but skin and bones By the skin of your teeth The root of the matter Weighed in the balance Behemoth Broken heart Bite the dust At wits’ end Spare the rod, spoil the child Pride comes before a fall There’s nothing new under the sun For everything there is a season Eat, drink, and be merry Fly in the ointment A little birdie told me Four corners of the earth Drop in a bucket See eye to eye No rest for the wicked Rise and shine Like a lamb to the slaughter Can a leopard change his spots? Sour grapes Feet of clay The writing is on the wall Ends of the earth Baptism of fire Salt of the earth Go the extra mile To cast pearls before swine Straight and narrow Wolves in sheep’s clothing A house divided against itself cannot stand Fall by the wayside The blind leading the blind Sign of the times Flesh and blood Cross to bear Move mountains Millstone around your neck What God has joined together, let no one separate The eleventh hour Many are called, but few are chosen Kiss of death He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword Wash your hands of the matter Head on a platter Good Samaritan O ye, of little faith Give up the ghost Cast the first stone The truth will set you free Better to give than receive A law unto themselves The powers that be Twinkling of an eye Letter of the law Fall from grace Reap what you sow Labour of love The love of money is the root of all evil Fight the good fight Armageddon

@@trueaussie9230 OK Mr aussie prior to tyndall the bible and manuscripts were only produced for clergy and highest in the land due to production and cost of literature. This meant that people had to except the church's interpretation, there was no debate and understanding tyndall translated the Bible so that even the plowboy ( as he states) could understand.in this process saying we still use to ie : morning glory, stitch in time ect. The bible is the most read book in history and analysis has shown over 70% of tge King James Bible is the tyndall translation his use of the printing press made it affordable and available to all.this changed history for ever. Another point is that just because a sentence is TRANSLATED ( as you put it) doesn't mean you can grasp what it means. Tyndall gave meaning and understanding. I think your reply shows a dogmatic understanding of the English language. Grammar and words are just symbols without knowing the meaning of them

As for Tyndale's work most was used to create the King James Bible & Geneva Bible which were carried to the American Colonies and were very instrumental in forming the United States of America based upon Christian Principles. Tyndale represented the thing organized religion has always feared the most, knowledge and enlightenment. Keeping people in ignorance and fear has always been the tool the church, used to subjugate and use common people. An ignorant person can be manipulated; you can take their money, their belongings and enslave them in the name of "the lord". This doctrine continues even today.

Tyndale provided to 'the people' an alternative interpretation of words written in languages that 'the people' were not sufficiently educated to read or understand. Most of 'the people' were illiterate in any and all languages and relied on 'the educated' to read to them. 'The people' lacked education sufficient to enable them to personally verify Tyndale's preferred interpretation. (Clearly Tyndale was very well educated. Are we to believe Tyndale contributed all of his UNPAID time 'out of the goodness of his heart'?! Where did Tyndale's money come from for his daily living expenses?! Who were Tyndale's financial backers?! What vested interests did Tyndale have in challenging / overthrowing the power of 'the church'?!) Ergo, 'the people' were subsequently confronted with TWO interpretations, neither of which 'the people' could personally verify. Tyndale's interpretation was further 'interpreted' and manipulated to become the King James bible - and others - to better please those with various nefarious vested interests. To this day 'the people' continue to be manipulated and controlled by those whose doctrine is simply ""believe, unquestioningly, what I tell you or suffer eternal damnation". Since its inception the Christian religion has been propagated throughout illiterate populations by parties pursuing their own nefarious vested interests - ALWAYS involving obtaining absolute power.

William Tyndale had a zeal for wanting the Bible in the common people's tongue or language, the vernacular, or "vulgar" language, so that he studied Hebrew and Greek (as well as Latin), and became capable of translating both the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures into English, so that ordinary people of England could read the Bible for themselves, writing: "I perceived how that it was impossible to establish the lay people in any truth, except the Scripture were plainly laid before their eyes in their mother tongue.”(Note: Tyndale was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1521, whereby Latin was still the language of the "church") However, he met with strong opposition from Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall of London, who used a 1408 Catholic council that met at Oxford, England, to destroy Tyndale's "New Testament", his Pentateuch in English in 1530 at St. Paul's churchyard, in which the 1408 Catholic council said that "we therefore decree and ordain, that from henceforward no unauthorised person shall translate any part of the holy Scripture into English or any other language . . . under the penalty of the greater excommunication, till the said translation shall be approved either by the bishop of the diocese, or a provincial council as occasion shall require.”(Note: For daring to contravene or violate this prohibition, many itinerant preachers known as Lollards were burned as heretics) Tyndale never forgot his purpose: to make the Scriptures easy enough for the ordinary layman to read, right down to the “boy who plows the field.” So his style and idiom are simple and clear, yet powerful. He paid close attention to the context and avoided additions to or omissions from the original text, even though paraphrasing was resorted to by most translators of the time. Tyndale’s word choice was also careful and accurate. For example, he used “love” instead of “charity" (as at 1 Cor 13:1-13, for the Greek word agape is used there that means "love, i.e. affection") “congregation” for “church" (as at Matt 16:18, in which the Greek word ecclesia is used, that literally means "called out" from the world into God's congregation of true worshippers) and “elder” (as at 1 Pet 5:1, in which the Greek word presbyteros is used; Note: the Catholic Douay Version, 1945 edition, reads as "ancients") rather than “priest” where appropriate. This infuriated critics like Sir Thomas More because it changed words that had come to be venerated through tradition. Tyndale was also responsible for introducing God’s personal name, Jehovah, into the English Bible. As writer and author J. F. Mozley observed, Tyndale used it “more than twenty times in his Old Testament” translations, so that Tyndale wrote in his 1530 edition of the Pentateuch: "Iehovah is God’s name . . . Moreover as oft as thou seist LORD in great letters (except there be any error in the printing) it is in Hebrew Iehovah."(Note: the letter I in Iehovah changed by the end of the 16th century to the letter J which just developed in the English language, so that God's name is now written in English as Jehovah, see Isa 12:2, KJV) William Tyndale was burned on a stake on October 6, 1536 at about the age of 42, after he was strangled, and who had once wrote to John Frith (who was himself burned in London by Bishop Stokesley [who once said that he "rejoiced that in his lifetime he had burned fifty heretics"] in 1533 C.E. at the age of 30), his colaborator, that "I never altered one syllable of God’s word against my conscience, nor would this day, if all that is in the earth, whether it be pleasure, honour, or riches, might be given me." Hence, William Tyndale revered Jehovah's word the Bible, and was willing to sacrifice his life to accomplish this work. So, how many people treasure the Bible as William Tyndale did, wanting to do as Jesus said at John 17:3: "This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God (Jehovah), and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ" ?

It is said that Ann Boleyn had a copy of Tyndale's 'The Obedience of Christian Man' and showed it to Henry the Vlll as his mistress which could have led to her death at that time. Ann was influential in Henry Vlll's fighting against the Catholic church and declaring he, the king was above the pope. This period in time with William Tyndale, Martin Luther, and HenryVlll's obsession with Ann Boleyn changed the Christian church. It gave the individual people more control over their own religious practices. My own ancestors fled England because they were persecuted for their religious beliefs. That is why the founding fathers established the First Amendment for the separation of church and state. Our government can not tell us what religion we can or cannot practice. The King of England forced its people to practice the religion of the country.

I’m Catholic but I have serious misgivings about the actions and teachings of the Church as an institution. Today’s Bible is only what the Church has decided we should know about Christ. And I’m convinced it also contains passages inserted by the latter Church and passed off as the words of Jesus and the Apostles. Hearing Tyndale’s story is another example of why I believe this. What a great man.

Thank you very much for including William Tyndales last words of opening the King of England's eyes, and the answer to his prayers just a few years later. Tyndale's Translation was used in Luther's German Translation, "Die Bibel," (they consulted with each other), and was also used in the making of the 1611 King James, or Authorized Version. The Greek text used was that of the Roman Catholic Scholar, Erasmus, and also Stephens, 1550 AD, that was translated from the "Minority Text," and back translated from earlier versions of the Latin Vulgate into Greek where it was missing from the "Minority Text." Again, well done here! People now take the Bible for granted, when translating it into English cost William Tyndale his life!

Are you saying "the Catholic church" - and its representatives - were NOT doing what 'god' wanted and intended?! 😱😱😱 Surely that makes "the Catholic church" - and its representatives - servants of evil, ie "the devil". 😱😱😱😱 So, those "servants of evil" must now be 'burning in hell', no?! And those who died at their command must be luxuriating 'in the land of milk and honey', no?! Tyndale enabled 'the people' to read an 'interpretation' of "the Word" that best pleased and suited Tyndale. 'The people' lacked the education, skills and means necessary to enable them to personally verify Tyndale's preferred interpretation of "the Word". By its very nature, any INTERPRETATION is infected with and effected by the interpreter's own prejudices and preferences. Precisely how has the role and practices of "the Catholic church" changed, in any significant manner, since Tyndale's time?! "The Catholic church" still strongly discourages dissent and logical open discussion and insists one must believe simply because it says so - or suffer eternal damnation. Only a fool would accept a diagnosis from their doctor, where no tangible credible evidence exists to support said diagnosis - and a plethora of tangible credible evidence exists to disprove, or at least strongly question, said diagnosis. Why are sooooo many sooooo eager and willing to accept similar arrogance from "the Catholic church"?!

With so many errors in the air and with the problems of earlier bible translations into English, it is no wonder the Catholic Church was being super careful. Add to that the rise of Lutheranism and Calvinism and the errors they promoted and it is no wonder Tyndale was dealt with as he was. The Bibles he inspired contained so many errors they had to be revised several times. Heresy and error were taken seriously in those days. Henry fell because of lust and the anxiety to have a male heir.

Translations are always a reflection of the translator, whether or not it is faithful to the original. Think of the NWT
