Syria is majority Sunni but back when the French were running it they decided to recruit the Syria native part of their army there from the Alawites. That is a Shia sect in the country. Net result when the country became independant they had control of the heavy weapons and seized control of the country and have held it ever since.

It’s more than that actually, I’m a Sunni and u may say I’m biased but in reality, for centuries Sunni’s and shias lived together and had many interrelationships and marriages and families together until 1979. Once the Iranian current regime came to power everything changed. They brought a really hateful ideology !! And it’s not about Sunni’s vs Shia as most westerners think it is, it’s about Persia (currently named Iran) wanting to dominate the Middle East by force !! When the US under president Obama signed a treaty with the Iranian regime the very next day the Iranian regime sinked a Huge statue of the last Persian Emperor (who was not a Muslim by the way) in the Persian gulf as a symbol of saying (we will dominate you) ! It’s exactly same as the Nazi’s mentality in the 1940’s of trying to dominate Europe back then but the only difference is, they try to use religion to justify it to their bases but guess what, when some of their bases refused (for example a Lebanese writer ‘Lokman Mohsen Slim’ they assassinated him even through he’s Shiaa ! They killed many young Shiaa Iraqis when they were protesting against them in Iraq back in 2019 ! Israel hasn't been carpet bombing Gaza. Their attacks have been targeted to avoid civilian casualties as much as possible. Ha,as makes that very difficult, however. Still, Israel has managed to achieve the lowest civilian casualty to combatant ratio in modern warfare.

I visited Beirut Lebanon in 2011. I fell in love with that country! I pray the war stops and people go about their normal businesses . I never knew that Lebanon as a country had fragrance! In the Bible Hosia 14 verse 5 to 7! I bought some dresses in Lebanon, for over six months I didnt need any perfume! Even her wine has its unique flavour and dont even get me started on Lebanese food!
