Strangely enough, I don't think he is "standing with Israel" per se. I believe he is standing with humanity by casting a light on the evil that stalks amongst us, and trying to wake us from our lazy thinking and indolence. Israel stands on the front line of the fight against that evil. We could justify our current reasoning as "supporting the palestinian underdog", but that is because we don't care about these "outsider Jews'problems" and are too shortsighted and lazy to recognise the threat and to stir ourselves to our own long-term survival. Furthermore, it is too easy to swallow the "downtrodden Palestinian" narrative and we resent being stirred from our self-satisfied torpor.
