This printer is great until you go to buy more ink. The hack is to change the date on the initial setup screen to 2021 year. Power off the machine then remove ALL the ink cartridges and refill as needed with a needle and syringe as seen on KZbin. Then power back up and install the same cartridges when asked. It will then show them all as full.

PICTURE CAME OUT G. Just bought this for $100 so worth it. Ink is cheap too $14 for Black 200 Pages or $56 for 2 Pack 500 Page Yield, $9 for the Individual Colors. The MFC J1170DW seems to print Color a bit Faster but is more $$. Uses same ink.

Just changed over from a canon inkjet that cost about the same (allowing for inflation). WOW this printer is 1000 times betterand easier to use. Setting it up to my wireless network was a dream. AND it has separate inkjet cartridges for each color. I will never go back to Canon.

Ordered one of these today. Curious if it is also gonna last 17 years as my last HP Laserjet did. Working from home and soon living and working from a boat made me order this one because it is smaller then HP printers and apparently Brother offers better ink economy then HP. Photos seem to look good enough and printed reasonably fast. I'll will mostly print text documents with a small logo.

I discovered that you have to use the ink they give you for the initial setup. It wouldn’t allow me to use the ink I bought. You can buy inks that last longer.

Can you scan directly to your computer? Also, does it have a usb port that you can stick a flash drive into? Also, is the auto scanning duplex?

If you have Photoshop. File/Import/WIA Support/Check mark all Options/Start Select Printer(scaner)/ OK/ Scan. Works for any scanner including the one that built in the printer.

It will print in colors which you will have left. Switch Image to B&W or picture will going to look really not good.

I didn't find cartridge chip resetter for Brother mfc-j1010dw and I think you will need to use new cartridges

Don't! Any scanner will blow up image flat, unless its some expensive scanner. I know it's primitive but I take a picture of photo print with my DSLR in RAW file then edit with Photoshop. Beats any my scanned with scanner photo scans.

Hi, I have this machine but i do not know how to get fax message. Can you explain?

I think It should require landline from your service provider with RJ-11 telephone Jack not RJ-45 which is bigger and works with computer Ethernet card. If you will be able to connect this printer to wall RJ-11 outlet, it should work as same as regular Fax. Just switch to Fax on front panel of that printer.

4:05 saw your review on Amazon. I thought: maybe Amazon just have a low res. to see all quality you were talking about. Nope! The same flat image here on KZbin. What pores were you talking about? There is not even shadows on this image to distinguish chick bones from chin. And your face on video looks just fine. I just bought this printer anyway in hope that this image of yours was that bad due to not photo paper printing. Or maybe this printer requires to reduce brightness in settings. Anyway, highlights, whites are blown along with shadows on that image. I just trashed my HP D7260 due to Ink System failure Error after 15 years of it's casual printing. which I could fix by re-setting printer but then it started to print images like zebra stripes, missing colors and This Ink System failure error came back again. I picked that Brother for RJ-45 jack (wired connection). Will see.

They are ALL pieces of crap. Bought an expensive Brother printer. After 3 months of very little use. Ink cartridges NEVER worked properly. Bought the large new packages of ink 3 separate times. All 3 never worked correctly. Tried every suggestion under the sun, from online & the company website to fix the issues. Still none of the cartridges work. (brother ink cartridges, NOT knock offs). Gave up on printing. Kept the printer just to do scanning & if nothing else, since I can't print anything or make copies, at least I could scan images & print them some place else. Does NOT even scan images correctly. Images come out like the old massive office copy printers. Tried every hack, fix & suggestion to fix it. NOTHING!!!! SPENT UPWARDS OF $500 on this poor excuse of a company. Now, I won't have the money for a loooong time to spend again on another printer. The word "anger" falls completely short of how utterly enraged I feel for being screwed out of my money & a printer. THIS COMPANY IS ONE BIG SCAM!!! It should be absolutely ILLEGAL to do this to anyone, because it is nothing short of CRIMINAL!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy anything but Brother. I am now printerless for a long foreseeable future because of these S.O.B.s And I REALLY REALLY REEEEEALLY NEEDED A PRINTER!!!! Don't let them do it to you too.

Lol, if you think that is bad. I had a Canon with a broken print head. The startup routine states "replace print head" and then the software would be stuck there and nothing would work. Even scanning. I'm sure there's nothing physically wrong with scanning but it's just scambag Canon engineer that "forgot" to let the user bypass the error on printhead message and allow scanning.
