I got a great 12 days of Christmas box from my daughter- each “door” has a different liquor and mix for 2 drinks with instructions on how to mix🥤. It will definitely be fun! The boxes are super cute. 🙂

One of the frugal ideas I do for gift tags is keep my Christmas cards from people year to year. Using those I cut out appropriate shapes from the card fronts or fussy cut the motif out and add to a solid colored background. Then use a black, silver or gold marker to write the To/From info. Recycling is good for the soul!

ROSA paints has good containers for their gouache too! I would suggest using a sealant for any object that you use gouache to paint! Exterior Modpodge or an acrylic medium matt or gloss! I bought Holdays class 6 years ago and felt like it was well worth what I paid. You've added new content every year! YOU are such a gift to this community! Interesting chat about pigments because I agree! You verbalized what I have been thinking in the last year or so. I always sought single pigment paints, felt betrayed by Daniel Smith's Primatek disclosure, etc. But the more I do color mixing and building palettes and triads, the more I don't see things so, excuse the pun, black and white. For instance, recently painted a commission and used 4 colors, one of them a May Green. It mixed cleanly and my painting was very realistic and natural. A few years ago I would have mixed PG7 and PY3 myself. But it was nice to have the consistent "mother" already mixed. 😂 Rambling now... Happy Thanksgiving!

Loved this week's topics, Lindsay! I've dived into gouache a bit more lately and loved this week's demo; it reminded me not to be afraid to dramatically change a background from a reference if it improves the painting; the rich, dimensional red you came up with through mixing was fantastic. I'm also going through a bit of a pigment philosophy crisis lately, lol, for a couple of reasons: I've operated under the maxim of using single pigments with the highest lightfast-rated option available for several years, but do longevity and fewest pigments matter as much as being able to get a more complete value range or, counterintuitively, luminosity of what you're trying to achieve? Especially in watercolor, sometimes the more transparent and luminous pigments, e.g. Hansa and Arylide Yellows over cadmiums, aren't as highly rated for permanence or longevity. This could also be a "my technique" issue, but lately, I've been finding single-pigment phthalos to challenge me with getting super dark values, so I'll end up going to a Prussian blue or adding another color in the mix, both of which challenge lightfastness and the "fewest pigments mixed possible" principle. I'm sure I'll find a place to report more learning findings as I explore.

I didn’t think anyone was less aware of movie plots than me, but your rollerblade expectations were priceless. If you like dystopian sci-fi, I highly recommend Children of Men with Clive Owen. Honestly I don’t blame you for thinking “Blade Runner” sounded like it could have roller blades. It was not the original name of the story the movie was based on. That story had the less catchier name of “Do androids dream of electric sheep”. It was very different than the movie. Similar premise but different plot. “Blade Runner” was lifted from another novel about the medical industry. Back to the art stuff: The Lightwish portable pallet is on sale for 58! Plus those red gabbie mop brushes are down to 31 bucks! Have a great weekend. Glad things seem to be going back to normal.

Do androids dream of electric sheep is by Philip K Dick and written in the 1950’s ( I think). I enjoyed it a lot but it is not the same story as Bladerunner and I think it would be considered sexist in some ways now. However, if you can look at it as a book of its time, it is a really interesting story. Glad your Dad is feeling better and that you are feeling productive too!😊

I get what you’re saying about the pigment stuff and how we overemphasize it at times, but I’ll be perfectly happy with the paints if primatech would come without the “made from gemstones” prices. And that’s why I think the disappointment was warranted, at least I feel so. As for buying stuff, I’m holding on to my wallet for dear life because Davinci is again giving out 3 15ml colors for free, for purchase of 75+.. I should just get myself out of their mailing list, really. I don’t need more paint. 😅

Glad your dad is doing better! Fwiw, I think having correct pigment info is important because I’m capable of making my own decisions re toxicity and lightfastness. So it annoys me that there are now so many paints out there that don’t provide reliable info, and I try to stay away from them. I don’t mind cheap jelly gouache using fading pigments though, as long as they don’t make claims of their paints being lightfast.

You mentioning alcohol markers drying out... is there a way to.. recharge them, for lack of a better term? I had been thinking about getting some pipettes, pulling out the nibs, and using the pipettes to add more alcohol - either the regular 70% or the 90+ that I use to wash resin prints with. I figured doing it that way would be better (and faster) than just soaking the nib. But that is a bit of work... thought I'd see if someone else has succeeded with it first or not. Or if there is a better wa7

I'm laughing at your Blade Runner story, and it's timing. My husband just said a week ago that we should watch it, once he got over his shock that I've never seen it. I always thought it had something to do with Oscar Pretorious, the So. African man without legs, who ran in the Olympics or something, and they called him blade runner (and then he killed his girlfriend). He looked at me with that disheartened look of wow, where did that come from? lol. I hope your dad's health is improving.

You should ask for a fitbit for Christmas. I have one and have had it for the last 6 yrs I love it. Ican even answer my phone with it if my phone is close enough. Anyhow you will see a graph

FYI: in order to be listed as having an active lifestyle and not a sedentary lifestyle you must walk 3750 steps per day, which is a mile and a half. Apparently, if you don’t manage that you’re a wuss.ha ha ha That is my goal at 64 with FM & spinal issues. I was close until last year’s surgeries…and now PT, which i highly recommend. SARA
