Great SATCHAT Lindsay! Currants are used with raisins in baking. You can ferment them with raisins in rum, minced to put in steam puddings or West-Indian /Trinidadian Black fruit cake… OMG, so tasty 👅!! There are two kinds of currants! There's the raisin kind (to me they're like inferior raisins - smaller and drier) and the fresh kind are a different fruit altogether - usually called redcurrants, or blackcurrants, or whitecurrants. They make lovely jams and jellies and are good cooked, with sugar, in a pie/crumble/etc with other fruit. The key is to add a bunch of sugar, basically.

My Sketchbook Floozy stencils came in the mail yesterday! I’m so excited to start playing around with them. In the spirit of using up our stuff, I’m trying to get my crafty friends together once a month for a UFO party, so we can finish those projects and have company while we do. So far, it’s been hard to get everyone together, but it’s only the second month, so I’m hoping that will change. Have a great weekend!

Fresh pineapple and papaya have an enzyme mixture in them called bromelian. It can break down protein chains. That’s why it’s used in marinades to tenderize meat. It’s neutralized by heat. That’s why canned pineapple doesn’t do the same thing.

@@zeldacheri I make jello at Christmas and Easter for our big family dinner. Lime at Christmas and strawberry at Easter. I use a can of pears in juice and a small can of crushed pineapple in place of the cold water. But first I dissolve the powdered jello in hot water, then put 4 oz cream cheese in the blender and put some of the hot jello in there. Then blend some of that with the canned fruit. Everyone loves it. There are no chunks of fruit as it’s all blended together, and it’s creamy from the cream cheese. When we’re ready to eat, my oldest daughter (almost your age, Lindsay) cuts up some maraschino cherries and makes a design on top of the jello. All 15 of us love it (except the granddaughter with dairy allergy). If you want a more specific recipe, I can put in a more exact one. I’m on my iPad now.

Love satchat. It’s become a regular Saturday-morning-in-the-bathrobe watch. I keep a Want Monster (love that) list in my phone. I resist the buy, until I’ve checked back. After a few days or weeks, if something is still there I may buy it - or not. Doesn’t prevent me from heading to Blick or the yarn store on the spur of the moment sometimes, but it helps.

I’ve been tuning into and enjoying your interview podcasts. Harry from Art Gear Guide was really inspiring. Though I’ve really been trying to curb the want monster, I have been buying a few select and well thought out supplies, and after hearing that podcast, I went to his website to see what he thought about some colored pencils I was thinking about. I loved how he didn’t just review the product (it was a favorable review) but also that he dug into the background of the company a bit as well. I totally know what you mean about how long it takes to explain something. It’s such a struggle! But I’ve heard from a beginner perspective or someone following along it really helps to go slow because they are making marks as you demonstrate and always a step behind, if you go super fast it gets very overwhelming (unless they constantly pause). I am so excited to get my floozy templets! I stuck up my nose and thought I could make them .my own with dies or punches...yeah well that was a much bigger project than I was up for. I just had cataract surgery and I can't see very well, and I am getting very impatient with what I cannot do. So I am hoping the shipping takes long enough to get here that I will be back to normal. My first plan is to camping (in a cabin) and I will take my giant sketch book with the smaller cells and see what I can come up with. It never dawned on me that the size of my book was causing me to be overwhelmed with the size. And I love my Prisma Color pencils! For those of us with arthritic hands they are more comfortable to use and soft enough to put down more color without pain. Thanks for all the tips and tricks you share with us all.

I did a Craftsy/Bluprint colored pencil tutorial and the teacher had a conversion chart of her favored colors for the class, so that you could choose either Prismacolor or Polychromos to follow along exactly with her class. Prismacolor is available everywhere. If it was me, I'd teach in them. Can't wait for the lupines.

I have ADHD and related with several moments of what you were saying :) Here's one hack to make you use what you have, awaken the want monster for supplies you already have by watching videos of people using and reviewing those supplies. It is very powerful! Another thing that has ended up being very good for me is cancel my amazon prime so that I have to shop from other stores if I want to order something and deal with shipping cost and longer waiting and less convenience because it means I can't be as impulsive. Basically I'm on an amazon boycott to save myself money and it is working. I've been ordering from either ebay or blick or other little places and it honestly is more rewarding to chase for a good priced deal once I do shop. If you want to you can make a mini series called "rediscovering my untouched art supplies" where you use ones that are more out of sight out of mind. It might be really inspiring for people. :)

Loved this Sat Chat! Have to throw in my 2p in support of currants! Firstly, did you know that until fairly recently they were banned in the US - something to do with potentially carrying a disease which damages some of your native plants! Must have found out that they don’t. I’m in the UK and we have white, red and black. What colour did you buy? Red - very tart and good for anything cranberry like. Similar for white. Blackcurrants are delicious - make jam or cordial (squash) and it will be super delicious. I have a bush in the garden and it gives me about 4-5 kilo of fruit every year! Enjoy them. DRIED currants are a great addition to spicy dishes like curries or butter chicken. The sweetness offsets the spiciness. Also DRIED currants are great for baking.....like adding to scones, fruitcakes, minced pies, etc.

You could surprise your family with a festive Easter fruitcake ~ they have currants and those bits of hard dried fruit! 😀 It's one of those foods you either love or hate ~ I personally love it if it has lots of walnuts in it. My English grandmother used to make scones and instead of using all golden raisins, she'd use half raisins and half currants. The sweet/sour combo in the scones was delicious!

I don't know if I can help you with the currants, because I LOVE them! I have several bushes in my garden, all colours, but the red ones are my favourites. They taste different depending on the bush (or variant) though, so don't give up on them for forever please. :) I eat them straight off the bush and then freeze them for the winter and eat straight from the freezer. Hubby puts them in yoghurt. My mother-in-law makes the tastiest juice with apples and redcurrants. I also see them pared a lot with white chocolate in cookies or added in bread dough with some seeds, raisins and what not. The leaves of the blackcurrant bushes smell amazing, I guess they have their own uses as well. There, I'll start a currant cult.

Another great Sat Chat! I am busy using up coloured card stock etc in my stash. I have followed Maymay made it, for the construction of a journal using card stock. I have used washi/stencils/stamps from another designer and then finished it off by using ephemera from another design to finish it off. I am quite pleased with the outcome! ❤❤❤

In baking you use dried currents…..they look just like tiny raisins dried. The dried ones are not tart. I use them in Irish Soda bread.

Good mornig! Enjoyed sat chat, as always. I'm in Canada and I've only ever seen and bought dried currants. I use them instead of raisins when making butter tarts for a dear friend who prefers them to raisins. These currants are really only very small raisins that are dried. I assume what you bought were currant berries. SInce they are so tart they would probably be best served as a topping or garnish on a sweet dessert, perhaps Pavlova. Apparently, Currants are small deciduous shrubs which are native to Canada however I've never seen these berries for sale in a store. The berries should last about two weeks in the refrigerator if kept in a sealed container. Enjoy experimenting with them. Have a great weekend.

Welcome to the DaVinci Resolve universe! I am learning it via Skillshare, where I found several classes for total beginners, which I can watch (and pause ⏸️) while working on the computer. I find it really great (and it is free!) That picture with Lupins looks great, I look forward to seeing the tutorial. About colour pencils: I find it overwhelming to have to either make do with a small set of 24 or have 72/120 colours to choose from. I can't seem to find my Goldilocks spot 😅. Hey! I literally just received my stencils. Love them. Realized there was another configuration that can be done with them. It works better with the square stencils (6x6 or 8x8) because there are more configurations (8 ways) vs the rectangle ones (5x7 or 9x12 - 4 ways) because of the overall shape of the stencils. LAYER the stencils one on top of the other. It gives almost a stained glass effect. It works best, obviously, for smaller sketches, but there are some people that like to work small or for little lettered messages particularly in the little rectangles. Hope someone else is as excited about this as I am. 😊

If you like the Elegant Writer, stay far far away from Sailor fountain pen inks- on my quest to find the ink in that Elegant Writer pen so I could paint with it, I found out that the Sailor Workshop inks ALL split out into multiple colors (baby blue ink streak into deep purples, forest green ink into pinks and blues, maroons into kelly greens) with just a drop of water. And now I am losing the battle against that want monster because they are all - all 100 of them- absolute crazy magic. If you think granulating watercolors are something, these inks are life changing. They also keep developing into deeper color changes for days after you put them on paper. Even my husband keeps coming into my studio to see what I have painted with them, to watch the colors develop. We're all obsessed. I've never experienced anything like them before, and I have been painting since 1987.

Why do you tempt me? 😆 so I looked on amazon and they have sets of their inks in cartridges. Do you think they would work the same? One color try a variety of colors that way. Just curious, I'm staying syring for now but they should cool. Any colors your recommend starting with?

@@thefrugalcrafter The Four Seasons Inks are not quite the same as the base line Ink Workshop inks (which go by number instead of name) because they are a little more subtle, but many of them DO shade out into different colors- the key is the water. If you want to see all of the numbered Sailor Inks swatched by an artist on watercolor paper, google "sailor ink swatch tests" and look at the image results. The artist's name is Nick Stewart and he swatches out all the major brands. The Sailors are by far the most dramatic. Strange and fascinating colors: Everything in the "Yarameku" line (they are made to be multi-colored inks that develop into multiple colors when dry), then from the number series: Sailor Ink Studio 224, 280, 173, 773, 162, 462, 442, 642, 143, 123, 252, 273, 373- those are some to start with. The best place to buy is amazon japan, but there is currency conversions and shipping costs involved, but if you get several bottles at a time, it is very very inexpensive especially if you catch a "buy four and get 10% off" sale and when the yen is down (which it is now) I would definitely give the Four Seasons cartridges a try- but I would break one of them open and brush the ink on a piece of well sized watercolor paper and then play around with adding water with a brush and moving the ink- the color will explode out as the water interacts with it and then dry down in that stage. I think each pack has three cartridges per color so you can noodle with your pen with the inks and maybe sacrifice one cartridge to see if you like to paint with it? Sorry for the long comment- this is my new obsession and it's dangerous- so much more color payout and magic than all the granulating watercolors in the world combined. I have never used a material like this in my life- it makes me SO happy and curious. When you start mixing the color changing colors together by touching them together on your paper- woooooo.

Hullo Lindsay, I have used budget supplies when I started buying my own and your comment about a supply being to precious is a real feeling. BUT, we must fight this feeling especially when we have a better supply in hand! I created some truly wonderful art pieces that have simply faded away! You can use whatever you want, but these days I just don’t want to spend my precious time working with junk! I am using 100% cotton paper even if it is not a wonderful artwork! I have branched out onto soft pastels and I have made my own surface, but I am using quality ingredients that will last long after I am gone! I know that not everyone has a budget for expensive supplies. You can find quality at reasonable prices. If you have the “good stuff” it just lasts longer and holds up better than the “cheap stuff” saving you money in the long run! I have actually washed a painting off of my paper and started over! If you buy quality that is what you get! Lovely SatChat Lindsay, thanks! Oh! I have never had a currant, well not that I know of or can remember!

I found a lot of budget pencils to be terrible to work with - the colour saturation on a lot of them is really washed out and they break terribly. I noticed a huge difference when I bought some Derwent Drawing Pencils.

I have been looking for ways to take art supplies on road trips now that we are retired and colored pencils and water color pencils and a couple journals seem to be the media that will work the best for the small space we will have in our get away rig. I love hearing you discussing using what you have on hand for a project. .That is one of the reasons I started watching you years ago. I am wondering if it would be possible to put some color blender liquid in to a refillable duo tip pen I wish my library would have art classes for older groups, I would certainly attend. Currently they only have classes for elementary age kids.

There are different types of currants. In the US dried currants are actually a different variety of raisins. Fresh currants are not at all the same. Last time I got fresh red currants I served them with a really sweet flan. They balanced the dessert well. I would recommend treating them more like cranberries.

Ah yes, the want monster. I've been sorting out all my supplies to sell at the 100 mile garage sale down the Mississippi from St Paul, MN to La Crescent. Most in my pile are student grade supplies that I've replaced with artist grade. Some are good quality supplies that I realize I just don't use or like and I'm sorting out my art books to sell. I have way too many watercolor instruction books that all have basically the same info. I tried making oil sticks ( not oil pastel sticks) and it was fun but I did not get the result I wanted. I used up my vintage Bob Ross oil paints and followed a recipe I found on YT, but, alas, I ended up using the wrong oil. I did paint a few sketches with them but hid them away, and eventually threw them out, and sold the oil paints left over at last year's garage sale. I love oil pastels too but won't try making my own........

Doing a major reorg and cleaning to prepare for getting around with a walker. Destashing some stuff- gonna donate a lot of fabrics that I will never sew into clothes. Then I can squirrel sway some of the many watercolor palettes I have somehow acquired.

Happy Sat Chat to ya!! I did watch this morning, but didn't get to comment. I got my stencils today! 🎉 So excited! These are perfect for watercolor and Zentangle drawings 😃 I've never thought of making oil pastels before. Sounds neat! I am signed up for the Michaels class. I'll look at the Derwent LF pencil list, and pick my own similar colors. I do really like Prisma and Derwent, but for me, I just love the Posca colored pencils. I'm so annoyed that there are only 36 colors, and they're so expensive!! No open stock either ☹️ And no color names on the pencil or LF info. I guess that's all sorts of negatives 😅 Currants taste like bitter dying taste buds and your gleek glands go nuts!! My grandma made currant jelly every year. Thanks for a great sat chat! Redcurrants and blackcurrants were growing all around my great grandparents house when I was a kid. Spiky shrub. My great grandmother would make pies and kompot drink with them. Gooseberry was my childhood favourite though and that grew in my grandma's garden. I lived for the warmer months when I could gather lilac, feast on gooseberries, sunflowers and fresh peas and hide in the garden with old books and improvised art supplies.

It really was ❤ Whatever crazy drama is happening pales when you are surrounded by nature's soft embrace. I planted some green peas myself last year to relive a joy of hunting for pods whenever I walk the cats. It was very manageable with minimal effort. Maybe except preparing the rocky soil I found under the wild weedy lawn edge 😂

I first had currant jam in France on a fresh croissant. Try it when you’re there- so yummy! As for fresh currants, dehydrate them or make jam 🤓

I hope this Saturday to do some acrylic painting. A few days ago I went to my local Salvation Army store and bought someone’s painted beach scene, took it home, and gessoed over it. Boom! $3 largish canvas! Plus saving it from possible landfill.

Forgive me if this is repetitive. I read several, but not all of the comments first. Dred currants actually are a type of raisin. They are made from a certain small grape. Fresh currants are actually a berry! Leave it to the English language (or should I say American English?) to give the same name to two totally different things! Fresh also come in white, red, and black varieties. When I was growing up, our property had many perennial fruits and vegetables. A favorite of mine were the red currants. The shrubs were about 4' tall, side by side for about 15' with only one place to walk through! We had so many...birds ate their fill, we ate and cooked our fill and invited others to come pick! I know in the store the containers are tiny so I'd suggest puff pastry or pie crust dough soft tofu whipped with a liquid sweetener and vanilla or almond extract. Spread that on middle third of dough. Top with sweetened currants and bake until crust is done. I used to wash them then sprinkle with sugar. Ate about a cup and a half every day when they were in season. Mom made jelly and pies. Great in a crisp or cobbler too!

Good morning!! My want monster has to go to sleep for a while lol. My craft room will be set up in the next month and now it is so hard to remember where I have everything right now. So if I need it I buy it and then I find that I already had it…Grrrr. I usually leave my phone when I go to leave the house and then need to go back in the house and get it lol. Hi, Lindsay. I think the currants you bough were fresh currants, and not the dried currants others have mentioned. _'Currants, also called Zante currants or Black Corinth raisins, are dried grapes that come from seedless Black Corinth grapes. These are not to be confused with black, red, or white currants, which are round, shiny berries that grow on bushes and are not usually eaten dried.'_ *Raisins:* the light-ish brown dried raisins we use for cooking, or which come in little boxes as snacks: _'Raisins [like currants ^^^] start out as grapes and technically, they can be made from any grape variety. Nevertheless, worldwide, the majority of raisins are made from a single variety: Thompson seedless.'_ (small grapes which we can also eat fresh, and are sweetest of all the grape varieties) Were your currants red? What you describe sounds like those - "shone like jewels" and "lots of juice.." I grow them and use them for making redcurrant jelly - far, far better than shop-bought, as is home-made blackcurrant jelly!) What can you do with what you have to make them palatable? Put them in a shallow bowl, sprinkle them liberally with sieved icing sugar (I don't know the US equivalent, but it's the sugar you use for icing cakes) and zap them for _a few seconds_ in the microwave. Let them cool, then add them for example, to yogurt or use them to top a dessert, like a no-bake cheesecake, or add to a cream-filled finger doughnut / donut. Really scrummy! Hope this helps solve your mystery? Coloured pencil choices: I agree with your idea for advising people to buy a few open stock. I'd advise the basic warm and cool primaries plus some earth tones, a dark grey and a white, because with them, we can mix an infinite number of colours by blending or layering. The added bonus is that by doing so, we'll learn the fundamentals of using coloured pencils right at the start, and as a result, won't need to buy masses more. Lisa, your Art Chat guest, demonstrated with the basic 12 set of Polychromos a while back and it's well worth making it recommended viewing for people who are new to coloured pencils. Hope this helps your 'What to recommend' dilemma?

Lindsay, I have made some wonderful Currant muffins. I bought a bag of dried currants. These currants were like raisins. They were great to snack on as well. I think you said you guys bought fresh currants. If you did, find a way to dry them. I have a food dehydrator. You might be able to dry them in the oven if you don't have a dehydrator. I can just imagine the assult on the mouth. The only Currants I had ever heard of were dry Currants, like raisins. Tell us what happened. Good luck!

Since you collect palletes, have you seen the Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set, Field Travel Set, 12 Half Pan w/ Brush, Mixing Palette, Bottle? The bottle and two water cups fit inside a large rotating hinge when opened. It's $30 and that's the lowest CamelCamelCamel says it's been in a year. It was briefly $15 four years ago, but that's not likely to every be the price. The Blick Derwent sale must have been short because there are a few things I would have bought, but it was gone by the time you did the SatChat.

QUESTIONS; How do you rest, and look after yourself in between all this work? I see a cute chook timer on your desk, how do you use this for your studio, art making? Just to let you know, I put one of your 9x12 sketchbook floosy templates in the Craft stash UK site basket, (17.40AUD, and with postage it is $47AUD) so just dropped the tab down and sighed... I will keep using my compass for sketch book illustrations portholes. (Just to show you the comparison prices, A loaf of cut sourdough with olives is about 8.50AUD, 47AUD would buy about 5 groceries, our rent is 940 a fortnight, for a 2 bedroom unit with garage 30 mins from city. 2 bedroom Units to buy here are about 850K AUD at 6.51%/year. I get 888AUD a fortnight, which means my partner Patrick has to supplement, just to pay rent!) QUESTIONS; Do you think you could ask Jacksons UK, to stock your products for us here in Australia? Their shipping can be free after a certain amount, they also have an art store warehouse in South Australia. Could you look at Jacksons site for some products for sales for yourself? Each brand goes on sale often. Eg, I find the Neocolor 2 open stock are great prices. How does this compare to Blicks and Michaels for you? The same happens with handmade watercolours on Etsy, if they are in the US, it is a no for us here, only due to shipping being 30 to 50 dollars AUD! I will ask Craft Stash about the shipping. It's probably automated on their site by price, but since they are light, maybe they can make an exception for shipping. I'll look into it. The chicken timer was a gift from my daughter maizy. When I am stuck r overwhelmed, I set it for 15 minutes and work on a task till it rings, and usually, I will keep going once I have the momentum.

to me, it is helpful to watch hoarders shows, I saw a lady crafter hoarder. they the declutters threw unopened craft supplies. she could sort them and gift them to school or art and craft group, or old people home. it was such a waste. So I am completely with you. use what you have, and when you buy, buy stuff that you can combine with supplies you already have

Currants, raisins, sultanas, use them all the same, in a fruit cake, fruit bread, sprinkled on porridge, mixed with nuts on ice cream, wherever you want something sweet. They are sweet, after all they are dried grapes, I don't know what you had! I prefer raisins, they are larger and juicier, and make a great snack, but don't eat too many!
