Hullo Lindsay, I enjoyed watching you create with these sticks! I believe that WMO Paints will work just like regular oil paints! I think you showed them off quite well! I believe the key is using the water to clean up after the painting is finished. I have used the mediums to thin, extend, dry faster too! I use water in the painting only as a last resort. I believe the stickiness is from the water interaction and the W&N recipe is different and more prone to that stickiness! I think you did a great job with these “paints” and they look to be just the same as regular oil sticks, which I think are just oil paints. I would say again, I use water for cleaning up. I find the mediums from Cobra or Holbein to be the best for the way I use oil paints. I also used the Artistico line from W&N and as long as I don’t use water for mixing or thinning I avoid the sticky or gummy effects other people seem to have trouble with. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, you are truly amazing and an Artist of the highest caliber! I do enjoy how you plunge yourself into so many different and difficult mediums! Thanks for another fantastic video and a complete tutorial on your Teachable school for those who are looking for greater understanding and at such an affordable price point too! Please keep showing your viewers how you can do it, if they just want to try!

Beautiful work! I have regular oil painting sticks, but I've never tried any of the water-soluble type. Maybe a primary set to try them out would be good. I'm considering destashing my oil pastels because, while I like them, I don't love them. Oil pastels, as u know, work nothing like chalk pastels, and just seem like something that for me, will sit & sit and never get used. Since taking a deep dive chalk pastel class in 2023, that I never completed, but did do enough to get me hooked, I am determined to get back into doing more work with them. When I think of using oil pastels, I don't feel inspired or real interest in using them again. But before I make my final decision I may give them another chance...and I do have a portrait set of Sennelier oil pastels that I will earnestly plan to do something with before striking oil pastels totally from my art supply stash 🙂

SO THANK YOU!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Oh edit to add: Still watching so I dont know if you talk about this but, can these be used on paper? Or do I need to apply gesso first?
@thefrugalcrafter14 күн бұрын
It's oil paint so it would eventually eat the paper if you don't gesso it. Plus it will be more pleasant to work on. I'll have a full review on these in a couple off weeks. Jerrys is having a sale on them and the open stock sticks are under $4 if you want to try a few.

@BirdwithaBrush14 күн бұрын
Thanks for doing this, I've been so curious! I was hoping that they could be used more like oil pastels with just straight drawing, and now I know maybe not. My understanding is that it is better to use synthetic brushes with water miscable oil products. Water makes a boar bristle brush go limp and behave differently. Water miscable oil products are interesting to me because it seems one area where brands can differ quite widely. I guess there are multiple options for the emulsion effect. I went with the Holbein Duo brand since they had some traditional colours and it sounded like I would enjoy the consistency. Holbein claims they are compatible with all mediums, including watercolour and acrylic. I know an artist who uses acrylic medium in lieu of OMS to do initial toning and sketching and such.
@thefrugalcrafter14 күн бұрын
I wouldn't have thought to try acrylic medium. I would think the drastically different dry time would make a crackle effect.
@nancylemon412014 күн бұрын
Thank You Lindsay! You just saved me a lot of money! I was curious about these when I saw them, BUT, your comparison to W&N Artisan oils makes it a definite NOPE for me … feel the same way. very yummy lol. Looking forward to the review of the water soluble oil sticks because I’m not sure how they blend differently than regular oil sticks would or water soluble oil pastels. Too many small nuances in materials lol. On another note, what colors were in your signature set of the Berlin water mixable oils paints?
@thefrugalcrafter11 күн бұрын
Honestly, the signature aspect was the other items I included: mimik hog brushes and linen panels. I decided to got with the stock 10 color kit because I could get more bang for customers buck that way. I would personally swap the cerulean for a pthalo or prussian blue tho:)
@kstutz23014 күн бұрын
What are you using to blend the colors? Water? Looks promising… BTW these are on sale at Jerry’s. About $12 cheaper than Amazon.
@thefrugalcrafter14 күн бұрын
Yes, only water!
@gertietheduck14 күн бұрын
I am so confused and intrigued by these! Do they dry solid? And if so do they then stay waterproof, or would water reactivate them? I so badly want to use oil sticks and oil paint but i get so stressed about rags self igniting due to the chemical reactions of the linseed oil that i don’t dare to in my home studio. Though i am definitely not consistent because i do use printmaking oil inks from Cranfield (also watersoluble) which are basically very thick oil paint.
@gertietheduck14 күн бұрын
I want these to become available over here in the UK!!
@thefrugalcrafter14 күн бұрын
They oxidize the same as oil paint so when they are dry, they are waterproof. I recommend a fireproof can so you can dispose of the rags with a piece of mind.

This is so cool!! I was totally wondering what the difference between water soluble oil paints and regular oil paints are. An added emulsifier! Thank you for this video and all your teaching. I dont oil paint, but I was still super curious about these oil sticks (think they were on sale at Jerry's black Friday). But I do want to get into gouache and pastels. (Ill have to look into your 30 days to painting class that you mentioned, because I barely tried the gouache and I have no idea what I'm doing😅) The Canson XL sand grain oil pastel paper you mentioned -- does that work for soft pastels too? (I have a liquitex clear gesso on the way, per your recommendation. Blick shipping is slow.) Love your tomatoes BTW!

Lindsay, what does alla prima (sp?) mean? This painting came out so awesome I love the vibrancy 😊
@Iwanttodrawachicken14 күн бұрын
It sort of means "in one session." It's common with oil painting, where it means wet in wet (think bob ross). The opposite would be to paint in layers where each layer dries before the next is painted. As with all historical art techniques, the meaning is more nuanced.
