Pretty Excellent Watercolor set of 36 Review ****I just heard from the seller Lithwish on Amazon and they said: "Yes, they are the same as the Paul Rubens brand paint. But they also have some difference." I think the difference is probably the packaging as the Paul Rubens paint comes in a higher end metal tin with individual plastic half pans and a chamois cloth and fancy gift box. If you were looking for a better buy on the Paul Rubens it seems this would be the set.

Pros:
Price
Bright clean transparent colors
Colors mix cleanly
Lovely tin/palette
Comes with a waterbrush or you can use the storage slot for your favorite brush
beautiful smooth colors finely milled
According the the back of the box 19 colors are absolutely lightfast and the remaining color were moderately lightfast but no pigment info is provided in English.
Cons:
All the info except color names is in Chinese so if there is pigment info available I can't read it LOL!
Bottom line, these are an amazing value for the price. There is no chalkiness even in mixes. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to use watercolors and ins't concerned with pigment composition (urban sketchers, art journalers, scrapbookers, cardmakers) or beginners who want the experience of painting with a high quality transparent watercolor without the high end price tag.

The only downside on these paints is not knowing what pigments are in them. If you take them at their word about the lightfastness they are an incredible value. Keep the back panel of the box to refer to that info if you want it.

For those not in the USA, try looking for these under the name MeiLiang watercolors. From the images on amazon Canada, it's the same set and has the parrot with "pretty excellent" written on the inside of the palette, it's just listed under a different name for some reason.

I bought these because of your review on them and I'm in love! I just wanted to let you know that the white fell out of its spot in the tray while I was on the go and when I went to stick it back in with a bead of water like I typically do, I noticed there is a half pan inside the plastic! They are actually not poured directly into that plastic tray, I replied to Lightwish's follow up message to the delivery asking if all of them were in half pans and they said they were. You can't see the half pans because of the paint, but if the tray gets damaged you could potentially cut them out and stick them in the metal tin like you would in a DIY tin. It was a nice surprise!

Most of us absolutely love you. I watch almost all of them. Cardamking, stamping, acrylics, watercolors, you name it, I pretty much tune in. You are such fun while you teach.

Hi Linsey, thanks for another great video. I have these watercolors, set of 24 (the early version without light-fastness info) and Paul Rubens set and yes, they are the same paints. The manufacturer is Aowen Art Materials based in Shanghai. They sell this paints under the name "O.WIN" as well but I haven't seen those on the western market. The difference is packaging (Paul Rubens tin is much sturdier and absolutely gorgeous) and the method of pouring the paints. "Pretty Excellent" ones, at least my set, all have big air bubbles at the bottom of the pans (so you have not the full half-pan of paint but rather 3/4 or even less) and after continuous use paint will start to fall out, while Paul Rubens ones filled in perfectly. The "Pretty excellent" paints are still gorgeous and I love them very much.

I really don't think these tutorials are a waste. You may have someone who has never water colored before looking for something to do and see this and think ok for $20 I'll give it a try. I stupidly bought some cheap watercolors before and now they just sit on a shelf because they aren't very good. Wish I had known about these at that time. Of course as impatient as I am I just went out to big box store and bought cheap watercolors and got what I paid for. But it got me to wanting to do better so.... thank you for this review. Even though my husband bought me a nice set of tube watercolors I may just have to get a set of these.

I had this set since August and they really remind me of the Van Gogh watercolor paints, which I love to pieces. I'd recommend this over the Sakura Koi sets as this watercolors haven't gotten cracked and chalky. Plus I love this tin. Though it caution that the colors and color names don't always match up, this might be a whoops mistake in my set, but some of my color swatches don't match up with Lindseys. I decided to match the color names best I could and not worry too much about it and trying to paint by hue rather than name with this set.

Keylimeink did a 6 month lightfastness test on these and only 4 had a barely perceptible shift and it wasn’t an unpleasant shift. Totally worth the money!

“If you don’t need paints you probably shouldn’t watch....” (as I throw this set jnto cart)... Honestly, I have so many lovely paints. But I just tossed some pens and some paper in my bag today for a short errand ... then my outing took a loooong turn. Went into a nearby art shop, and just couldn’t convince myself to buy an overpriced watercolor set I didn’t need. But I could have been working on some cards for a swap if I’d just had a set with me! So I’m ordering this set to break up into mini Altoid box triads that I won’t weep over if lost. (And one of them is going to live in a plastic bag in my husband’s glove compartment! I watched your video four days ago on the Mieliang watercolor and I ordered it from Amazon two days ago and I just got it about an hour and a half ago. I did a color swatch and the colors are bright and vibrant and slightly creamy from the pans. Really nice. I know they’re not semi moist but to a certain degree they look and feel like they are.

I love watercolors! Watercolor is my favorite medium to use. I have basic Daler Downey ones from Wal-Mart, Prismacolor watercolor pencils, and then some other random little set. I also discovered that I can mix some acrylic paint with some water and get watercolor paint as well. So if you're in a pinch (like if you ran out or something), acrylic paint + water = great watercolor stand-in. If anyone was wondering, there you go. ☺

High quality materials are important. BUT i completely agree. Doesn't matter how cheap it may be. If it brings you joy to use it, it will help you learn more than if you're afraid to use you'r high quality paint's. A habit i want to lose. But im still a proud owner of many cheap brands and even school art supplies. :) it's a shame amazon does'nt ship these to my country.

I enjoy your enabling videos about watercolor especially! I have a lot, but I don't always want to use my expensive watercolors to play around. I lost a watercolor block and Windsor Newton set of watercolors in the doctors office one day. It broke my heart, but didn't kill me. I really appreciate you sharing great inexpensive finds. I found a market source for what may be the same paints in bulk and customized, with a pretty decent price but the minimum number was way intimidating. I bought these watercolors and was extremely pleased with how they act in wet on wet, as well as wet on dry. The card that comes with the paints has the name in Chinese, but there is also a number and a name in English. Small print, but readable. I then did my color swatches using this guide. So far I am very happy with the range of colors and how they go on my paper. Print on the back of the box is really tiny!

I got this set for my grandson for Christmas, he’s twelve and didn’t want “kids” watercolors. I think he will love them, also purchased a set of brushes to go with it. I First ordered a set from Arteza, that was awful. It had rounds pans and the case broke right out of the box. I ended up throwing it away and ordering this Pretty Excellent set per your review. You made my day! When I was new to watercolor painting after 50 years, I viewed sets on Amazon and chose this one. I use it most of the time. It does not disappoint. Now trying Paul Ruebens and Van Gough - haven't used either long enough to make an opinion.

I love watching your videos and learning new things. I was mostly a long time seamstress and bead crafter, have always wanted to learn to paint. In the last several years I have usec KZbin as a means to learn painting. Yes, whole hog, all three mediums. Ha, difficult. Am sticking to water and acrylics, depdnding upon what I want to do. My watercolors are all cake and its challenging but I am not giving up. Midway through this video I am excited to try these paints. My birthday is coming up end of Jan, I will be 61. I am going to buy these for myself. My most recent paintings were of Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke, looked like a lady but not miss Kitty, also a picture of my grandsons playing in ice at roadside in the mountains with icecicles and frozen waterfalls. Hi. Just thought I'd drop a note here. I actually have both the Paul Ruben's set and this set. The packaging is a bit better with the Paul Ruben's, but he paint itself acts similar. I use the Pretty Excellent set along with a Pentalic watercolor journal when I'm traveling. I've had them since July.

The _Pretty Excellent_ range is *Paul Rubens'* own budget brand. Some of the pigments are different and a few other things, but overall a very good buy. Kim Crick has done another excellent video saying as much.

I know this is an older video but I wanted to put this out there. I love experimenting on small paper like that and rather than wasting something beautiful like your mixing samples I die cut words for cards out of them. I do a lot of encouragement and thank you cards so I always have use for die cut words.

Yes, this is the student grade made by a company called Aowen, which makes Paul Rubens.This is considered lower quality than Rubens. I never used this particular line you got here, because Paul Rubens is so cheap and so excellent! The last time I was back in China I made sure to pick up a 48 color half pan Paul Rubens.

I just bought these for $17.48 from Temu (April 2023) because you gave such a favorable review. On their website, there is a product video, and at the very end of it is the Paul Rubens logo, so I'm sure you are right that these are the student-grade version of the Paul Rubenst set. Mine looks exactly like yours. I did notice many of the colors on the swatch card are different than the ones on the pamphlet and back of the box. There are about 8 reds, and a couple of those look the same to me; same with yellows and blues - one or two look the same, but all in all it seems like a nice set! I've only swatched; haven't played around with them yet.

I treated myself to another set of cheap watercolours this week too! I scored a Faber Castell 18 full pan set for $15AU in BigW. They have that same tin in black (no cute parrot tho LOL), but with mine, the flimsy plastic vacuum-formed liner is black instead of white. My 'good' watercolours are only half pans, so these full pans will be great for practice & make my 'good' ones last a little longer. This Faber Castell set also had no chalkiness (despite looking like rods of brightly coloured chalk in the pan) & are bright & translucent. Just wish they had a pretty parrot too :(

I bought the 36 set a few months ago and I love them especially the tin. Although I didn't care for the plastic container holding the paint I instead bought some half pans to pop the paint into and rearrange them so I could add my small supply of DS to it. Decent paint, great tin and switching the plastic container for half pans makes these a must buy. Just make sure to get them on sell.😁😁😀

Hi Lindsay, Just bought this set and the swing out travel set . I decided to try watercolours. I went to Jerry’s arterama, and brushes were on sale. The woman who assisted me was very helpful. I just purchased these and wow wow wow , the colors are fabulous , so vivid and no scrubbing the pan to get the pigment up , the only problem is the names of the colors don't match the charts or swatch they supply, thanks Lindsay for the review ❤
