I just got Fontself and I ran into an issue. I want to mae a spray-paint like font for my boss in illustrator,, but but now that I have the lower case, and capitalized letters done Fontself is telling me that the letters have too many points. Its spray paint. So there are little dots, and stroke marks, and drippings on each letter. How am I supposed to make artistic fonts if this thing is telling me that I'm limited to how many points Fontself wants me to have??

When you use Image Trace you can check the Ignore White box (in the ‘advanced’ drop down) so you don’t have to deal with any of the white from the image.

That was awesome. I have a font that I designed but haven’t known how to roll it out!? *excited* The only thing with the whiteboard font was that I felt the beautiful naturalness got removed. Hey Chris, the reason your characters had those extra white pieces is because they were left over from the live trace. If look under the advanced image trace options, you will see an "ignore white" checkbox. Select that and it will remove any white that is found inside the type! Hope this helps in the Futur :)

This video is really awesome! I am not a designer, I am a programmer, but I saw this video because I need to know how to design fonts for an app to render mathematical expressions. Yes, there is LaTeX, KaTeX, MathJax etc. but I want to have control over the look and feel of the math symbols, which can only be achieved if I design my own. So yeah, thank you very much for bringing this high quality content!

Chris and group, I have a work hack for the leftover shapes you kept finding after you auto traced and deleted the rectangle. As they were all the same color (white): Select one offending piece > Select (top menu) > Same > Fill color > delete. Et Voila! I learned this when had to repeatedly uniformly change clothes colors on 100s of characters I had created for a project, this technique works great for that situation, as well. I agree with manual adjustment of paths as many times it's required, but another helpful tool, especially with your first hand-drawn font, is the Smooth tool. It averages curves and deletes points. You can still manually adjust points and paths after. Hope it helps in the Futur 🥁 P.S. Little Fun Fact: I had illustrator open and got frustrated when I tried multiple times to move the illustrator screen to see more of the font, only for my internal voice to chime in with "That's not my screen, it's Chris Do's and I'm trying to move a screen in a KZbin Video". #ImAStableGenius

Thanks. You can also tick the *Ignore White* checkbox from the *Image Trace > Advanced* which will save this extra step :)

Over the last 30 years I’ve created about 60 typefaces, but never actually done the work to get them to a stage to install upon a computer. That part has just never interested me. Many aren’t even legible in a true sense. Many are simply abstract patterns or codes, sometimes based on colour. A few are typefaces that I would call adaptable, in a way that you can overlay two shapes to create a third typeface. Kind of hard to explain. I’ve used many for clients and some have even won competitions. Some people have made comparisons with Wim Crouwel, which interestingly doesn’t get a mention here. Now I’m getting quite a bit older in recent months and I’ve been considering taking the step into creating these typefaces as something to be installed and ultimately shared with others. Thanks for this video.

Hello, thank you for this video, I am not into font design, but I am so curious ! It is intresting so far (I write this @19:00 to be honest). The kind of font I like to make is display/techno fonts. I really like futuristic fonts and I'm really having some ideas. It's kind of easier for me to draw techno font concepts as it uses more lines than curves (like the common serif, sans-serif, calligraphy), and I don't like too curvy fonts that much in the beginning. I made my first fonts in the Geometry Dash level editor yet I won't be able to export it to ttf file because in the first place it's a game. I recreated the last font I made in Geometry Dash, to Fontstruct. I made all the uppercase characters and all the numbers and it was really fun. I still didn't finish the font and then I transferred it to Inkscape and Fontforge. I'm designing all the glyphs in Inkscape and copy paste those glyphs to Fontforge, then I just set the width and right bearing for each glyph, then either check for the errors or just ignore it, then finally I'll export it to .ttf for testing. It was really fun and bit of a struggling experience because of some bugs that was actually solvable. Feels good to see a cool looking font then realize that you actually created it. There's much more to do here than just these above, like the kerning for almost all glyphs and some measurement stuff like using either 1000, 1024 or 2048 pixels. Good luck!^_^

The sad thing is the developer of fontself refuses to fix the application adding values to typoline gap making it so characters that have descenders like gjpqy gets pushed above the baseline instead of descending when a bitmap font is created. People with samsung devices require a font to have a value set for typoline gap in order for descender characters to do what it was supposed to do. If you have any suggestions that would be amazing.
