THE FINAL HOURS OF HALF-LIFE: ALYX
In 2020, Geoff Keighley (The Game Awards) returns to his landmark Final Hours series for a new chapter chronicling Valve’s surprising return to the Half-Life series.
This multimedia experience, created by Keighley over the past 9 years, takes customers inside Valve, one of the world’s most acclaimed developers, for a surprisingly honest and personal look at the ups and downs of the creative process.
Keighley began his Final Hours series 21 years ago, in 1998, with The Final Hours of Half-Life, which he wrote as a sophomore in University. It was followed by The Final Hours of Half-Life 2 (2004) and The Final Hours of Portal 2 (2011).

I lucked out when the office was in a bit of disarray as a number of the people there were coming back from their vacation and was able to get a private tour from someone familiar with their move to the new building. Those offices are incredible. The view alone is stunning - on a clear day, like when I visited, I could see the skyline of Seattle, including the Space Needle. Significant portions of the building itself had to be modified to accommodate their requirements, such as the strengthening of the entire lobby floor to hold whatever they wanted to put up there, such as the famous red valve they've had forever. Other modifications include the soundproofing (actual acoustic isolation from the *entire* building) of the recording studio. There's three feet of air between the interior window of the recording room and the exterior window (you can see the building's skeleton in the space between). In each of the cafeterias on (almost? fuzzy memory) every floor they have custom tile art (you can see an example of this at 7:30) that was designed with intent, instead of just a random assortment of Valve-related things; a couple walls had waveforms representative of voice lines from some of their games. Everything in that office was hand-picked with deliberation and it's just amazing. 10/10 absolutely want to go back.

I’m 21, so I didn’t necessarily grow up on half life, but I do remember when half life 2 came out. I was 6, and my cousin beat it like 17 times. He showed me Garry’s mod, and I played it for so long using half life 2 assets. I didn’t actually play half life for a while, but I became obsessed immediately. I’ve waited a damn long time for another half-life. I feel for these guys though.. half-life 3 would be the most daunting gaming project in the history of gaming. I would not want to be the one to take responsibility for living up to that pressure. I personally think this game will be a stepping stone. They are going to test the waters to see if they can still do the series justice. You got this valve.

"Half-Life 3 was a terrifyingly daunting prospect." They made such a masterpiece in Half-Life 2 and the Episodes that they would rather ignore it forever than not live up to the legacy. On one hand I really appreciate this because they understand that they can't half-ass Half-Life and release an average game. But on the other hand these developers are some of the most skilled in the world. They can certainly create a superb game... they just need more confidence. I just hope that HL:A gives them the courage to move the original story forward and to its conclusion.

@@Jonas.A.Larsen That is one way to look at it. After Episode 3 fizzled out and became vaporware, everyone was talking about how Valve would need to make a full length HL3 to make up for it... and then that never came either. In one interview with Gabe he mentioned "No one here wants to do Half-Life." The first HL was ground breaking, the second equally so with the Gravity gun. After Portal though, they were kind of out of game changing ideas. Creators need an impotus to be 'creative'. This is why they started investing heavily in VR to begin with. Anyone who has followed Valve over the last 3 years knew we would eventually see a VR title from them. Most assumed it would be Portal, but if this game does HL justice, and pushes the gaming medium forward... I don't really care if I need to make an investment to be a part of it. That has been the case with nearly evety worthwhile advancement, tech or otherwise, since "ground-breaking" became a phrase.

Yeah, and it’s starkly contrasted by the other three who most likely have the careers they want too, but don’t look nearly as happy as Jeff does. I can understand why people who were waiting for Half Life are a little let down by this being a VR title, but I for one still believe that VR is THE future of gaming and somebody has to take one for the team and spent a lot of money (that they will not necessarily get a quick return on) on a compelling game that is NOT just a tech demo, but that actually shows people the capabilities of VR as a Platform for future AAA Titles. I am glad Valve decided to go that step. And if it's by using the Half Life IP, that's fine with me.

That said, I'll be picking this up and looking forward to getting the Valve Index.

So that price will come down too. I would love to have that. Have you ever checked around Steam VR's mod workshop? It contains an old Valve test world that includes novel experiments such as pogostick locomotion. You can _Duel wield _*_pogosticks_* in VR, and race a friend round the map by bouncing off the walls. It's ridiculous, but I want a game to use it so badly. xD

Half-Life 2 is one of my all time favorite games, Valve has truly made a a timeless classic, the story is so deep, even after all these years still new things to be found, hidden details that add to the lore, the world building is on another level, being immersed in the world, it truly feels like you are in it, The G-Man such a deep, mysterious character, we don’t know who how is, his motives, the fight against the Combine, the gameplay is top notch, the use of the Gravity Gun, environmental physics, just a masterpiece game, Valve are among the best developers in the industry, really hope they make a part 3 some day 👏👏👏

Yes but they won't get the full experience. There is just something that feels missing whenever you play a vr based game on desktop. The lack of interaction in a game made for maximum interaction doesn't feel right. It's exactly what they said in terms of the fact that there is so much more interaction and intuitive-ness in vr.
