So pretentious and obnoxious, we all collectively mocked James Cameron for going on two decades after he insisted technology needed to “catch up with him” to make his stupid Dances with Wolves but in space movie. Nothing about the Half-Life series or the story therein needs some stupid gimmick or “revolutionary new tech” to be good or to justify a new installment. A new installment is justified by leaving people on a fucking cliffhanger 20 years ago! Fuck the stupid gimmicks and the perceived need for them, I see all that as full on excuses or a true signifier for how stupid and deluded the high ups at Valve are. People kissing Gabe’s fat ass and worshiping him and telling him how good his shit smells for twenty years has not helped anything or anybody.

@@zippityzbrakejust adding on with Alex they added VR into the source 2 physics engine. You can shake a bottle full of water in that game. And that same engine now runs dota and counterstrike. Not to mention their new moba game that’s in testing. Valve works on valve time, they do what they want when they want. They scrapped left for dead 3 supposedly months before it could have been fully released. Years into development. Their employees have massive creative freedom and freedom to work on what they want. It’s why they have been so consistent over the years. And don’t get me started on all the dev friendly things steam alone has that is revolutionary for the gaming industry.

I think the scarcity is part of what makes Valve's games so good. They're not being forced to develop a game they don't want to produce. The fact that they can produce it on their own time, especially when they get to flex their latest innovations in games technology, seems to be what gives Valve games their polish and loved jank. On top of that, you'd get bored of it if a Half-Life game was released every year.

1. Valve co-developed Left 4 Dead with Turtle Rock Studios, they committed roughly 100 staff members to its development and were involved throughout its life cycle. To say it was made by Turtle Rock is inaccurate. 2. Portal is a Valve original product, it just uses a mechanic from Narbacular Drop. They even tried to experiment win fps cap to add hidden pay2win. Like valve made skin on csgo but Chinese too it to next lvl added hidden pay2win like hidden aim assist . The fact that half life 3 will come out only if there is a big pivotal point in gaming as now they only release stuff from the half life universe once they are aware that a new set of hardware is easily able to be able to consumers makes me think they already have an idea on what a potential half life 3, portal 3 or even tf3 could look like. The owner of Valve is living his dream. He and his team created revolutionary game titles several times, created a platform for gamers to buy and communicate with one another, and then released their very own console. This is the literal definition of growth. He’s slowly becoming the guy who created Gregarious Games in Ready Player One. Half-life 3 was a sacrifice for innovation to be made and if we never get another Valve title so that the industry can be steered in the correct direction by actual gamers, then I'm with it.

I think the main things that makes valve so good is that they just know their customers better than anyone else, they are willing to do things just for the sake of making things better for the consumer and they try to add or improve things that you didn't even know you needed. For example, a relatively recent update added some new features in the steam overlay such as being able to take notes while playing or pinning windows to show in game, this is something I think most people wouldn't think they would need until it's there and they realise how convenient it is, but this directly doesn't make them any money. They do what they can to improve their service as much as possible because they know by providing the best service with the best features for their consumers they will end up making more money.

we won't see HL3 from that. That is not the type of technology they show off in their games. It's not really visible and doesn't really change gameplay other than the fact that it can be played on Linux. HL1 showed off their GoldSrc engine, with scripted sequences, more advanced animations, and unprecedented levels of interactivity. HL2 showed off their Source engine, with incredible (at the time) graphics and a real time physics engine. HLA showed off their Source 2 engine and how well they've made it work with VR, with incredible graphics (given that it runs well in VR) and a new physics engine built by them. HL3's new technology being "it runs on Linux despite being developed for Windows" doesn't sound very impressive, even if it is. We'll see HL3 once they really have something new to show. And once they are confident enough to continue the story...

It was even more revolutionary at the time. There are things which we take for granted now that were introduced in two revolutionary FPSs, released only a few months apart: Half Life and Unreal. Both used environmental storytelling in a way no other FPS to date had. No more roaming a poorly-thought-out world shooting generic enemies - these games put story as an equal element to combat, and told it through level design. Both used a new level of AI sophistication. Earlier games just had enemies wander around and shoot at the player, dumb as rocks. Unreal enemies would actually dodge incoming projectiles, something entirely new. HL took it to an even greater extent - while most of the aliens are dumb beasts, as you'd expect, the human enemies could effectively use cover. A lot of it was actually hints in the map telling them where to hide. It modeled sight and hearing senses, and the marines even had squad behavior - if one member sees the player they can call to their allies to come and assist. The graphics were also the best around in 1998. Though they look pretty crap now, naturally. There have been updates that modernise the graphics.

I think the part where Valve let the community do it for them is a little misleading, they really work and create the titles, sometimes changing almost everything in the project (this is the case of Portal, the only thing from the original project is you go through a portal and exit another). One good example is that Turtle rock studio claims they are the creators of Left 4 Dead, but if you count how much employees Valve had in Left 4 Dead, you could easily say its a Valve game, loved by players and commercial success. When you compare to what games Turtle Rock did alone after they split with Valve, only commercial failures (Evolve and Back 4 Blood). I think the best way to put it that Valve sees the potential in other developers work, hire them and work together to bring something amazing.
@peacemaster8117

This is the comment I was hoping to see. Valve developed L4D in cooperation with Turtle Rock, they committed somewhere around 100 employees to the project and were involved throughout its life cycle. They didn't just show up at the end to slap their logo on it, it's very much a Valve game. Like you said, this is obvious enough when you just look at Turtle Rock's subsequent attempts to make a game without Valve's co-development.

In terms of Half-Life 3, I think we're actually closer than so many people realize. I think the next innovation Valve is gonna start pushing is probably AI in their games (for NPCs or their game director) or a Linux based distro as a standalone OS for their users. I think either of those things will 100% come with a HL3 and most likely in the next 2-3 years. I would not be surprised if Valve is looking into utilizing AI to make more believable NPCs and an OS designed to free up enough resources to give that theoretical AI the best chance at working.

Valve followed a similar path as ILM. Instead of just showcasing special effects in Lucas films, they established themselves as a special effects house and sold them to anyone that could afford the technology in their movie. In doing so it also spawned other studios and helped create thriving special effects industry. VGalve can make infinitely more money as a software distributor than they would ever make as a game studio. It also gives them money to take on any project they would like without worry about deadlines that currently plague the industry with subpar games on release.

There are always multiple answers to this but one of them is probably the Steam revenue. From my view, I see they are trying to maintain the steam platform by supporting the community on their platform and capture newer potential market outside of window. That is why the steam deck exists and so is Steam OS which is build upon Arch Linux, a distribution of Linux. Since window now has multiple competitors like the Epic Games Store for an example. Speaking as someone who spent time in the game industry both as a studio and indie dev, considering all the turmoil as of late with studio shutdowns and IPs being canned, Valve should put some of their money into making a "Steam for game devs", a way for small / indie studios to be able to fund their projects. It would create an even bigger market of games for Valve to sell on Steam, and would help ensure the industry doesn't create miserable living conditions for the people actually working on the games.

Even when Valve upgraded Counter-Strike from Source 1 to Source 2 engine, it's also for the sake of keeping their second money printer alive (CS skins economy keep generating them millions each month). Maintaining the aging Source 1 engine is a pain to do for them (just look at the some of the source codes that got leaked) and upgrading it to their latest engine eased some of the tech debt for them. And then there's Neon Prime which is still in development, that I believe is another Game as a Service from Valve. They will exploit the heck of that game through skins economy or some kind, I'm genuinely sure of it.

Valve has had trouble making Left 4 Dead 3 and other games for a few key reasons. First, they use the Source engine, which isn’t as advanced as newer game engines, making it harder to create innovative games. Their flat company structure allows for a lot of creative freedom, but it can also lead to projects being sidelined or losing focus. Additionally, Valve has shifted its attention to maintaining popular games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike, rather than working on new ones. Plus, there’s also a lot of pressure to meet high expectations after the success of previous titles, which can delay development. All these factors make it challenging for Valve to release sequels and new games.

People keep saying Valve doesn't make new games and then they released Alyx. Merely 2 years later all of that just come back again lmao.

Alyx was a stupid gimmick that uselessly retconned the story and elucidated nothing, didn’t move the story forward. It is reasonable to not accept bullshit microwaved leftover tech demo nonsense that shits on previous story that people actually care about more than stupid ass gimmicks. And if you care more about the gimmicks then fine have fun in your VR goon chamber for the rest of your life praying to Gabe!

Valve also give out quite a bit of money to Linux developers from Kernel development to the KDE Desktop. I have a feeling they are going to release more Linux devices, probably have another go at a console like PC, it would make a lot of sense a lot of people are put off with PC due to having to deal with the OS. An added benefit is much of the stuff just runs better under Linux, it's getting to be a joke now compatibility layers run games with less stutter than actual Windows which is insane. Thanks Valve.

There's no need for them to make new games. They have a dominant platform that's making them a fortune. It's so dominant that they quit valuing and respecting their customers years ago, because they don't need them bad enough for it to be worth it.

My money is on AI integration. If you've seen the Skyrim mod that uses ChatGPT to implement improv conversations, then you can imagine what a fully socially interactive Half-life 3 could look like.

Game developers/publishers going public is what has slowly been destroying those companies (*cough*ActivisionBlizzard*cough*). Good on Valve for figuring out a way to stay a private company.
