Notes from Daniel about this arrangement:
Time to fight the heartless and show that friendship can defeat the darkness! March Caprice is an annual celebration of the Kingdom Hearts franchise via music and other fan creative works. This is the Game Brass's first year participating in it (thanks to David Russell and Ro Panuganti for the invitation) and it was a lot of fun!
For this arrangement, I chose Scherzo di Notte. I really enjoy this tune (Hollow Bastion has some of my favourite music) and like arranging pieces that have a lot of very distinct motives (especially the 2-against-3 rhythm and the distinctive 16th note flourishes in the main melody). I took some inspiration from the tone poem Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns when shaping my direction for this arrangement, especially for the development section. That piece is also set at a quick tempo, uses ostinatos, and has an overall "scary castle" feeling living in a similar harmonic realm.

Scherzo di notte is my favorite piece of music period. Nothing else tops it for me. Im shocked and so happy you guys covered it. Its incredible. This is the first time ive heardthe theme in this key, or tone? ( Lol) And i love the spin you guys made to this theme by adding new elements to it. And even when you got to the main part of the theme, it stayed so accurate. (Which is apparently to hard for ppl who make piano versions of this song to be accurate to the in-game theme).this is definitely going on my playlist.

Hey, glad to hear we did your favourite piece justice! And good ear on the key too, ours is set in B-flat minor whereas the original is in B-minor. We did this because flat keys typically sound better on brass due to the way the instruments are tuned (and also because John Robert really has to sail whenever piccolo trumpet has the melody, so having it be a little bit lower is appreciated). We take liberties on a lot of our arrangements -- some moreso than others -- and we always try to do so in such a way that our interpretation pays respect to the source material, while still offering some original twists or ideas to those who are familiar with it. Scherzo in this context is most likely referring to the musical interpretation of the word, being a quick tempo and generally playful composition. This would change the meaning of the title to "Night Scherzo" or "A playful piece at night".
