I got mine at 6 flags. They had a machine that you plopped your cart in pressed a button and it put a mew into an empty team slot. No one was there so i kept pressing the button adding Mews. I backed up my save with a Retron 5.

My brother used to go to a lot of Pokemon events, he had a mew that he passed down to me as a kid and some other event Pokemon for gens 2 and 3. Sadly the batteries ran out last year, so seeing this is very bittersweet I wish I dumped my/his save data. Similar story to yours actually, I had a mew on Yellow but he had a mew on Blue, the blue cartridge was stolen though 6 years ago, not because of the mew but because this acquaintance of ours we didnt know was basically taking games from under our noses to sell on ebay, they made a killing with some of them like chrono trigger and clayfighter as well.

There’s a way to transfer Pokémon from Generation 1 to modern versions of Pokémon and you have one of the items that you’ll need. I had gotten a mew from the toys r us event too. But I lost my mew when the battery ran dry on my game. I didn’t find out about it until years later. I was looking at videos online and they mentioned this fact. I was hesitant to check my games but eventually I did and found that all my saved data was gone. What a rip off! I always thought that having to go to these events to get these rare pokemon was stupid. And this battery issue is the perfect reason why. Just make them available in the game. You should have the same chance of getting these rare Pokemon as you do with the rare Pokemon found in the game. I was so mad about losing my mew that I just flipped gamefreak the finger and used a cheat code to get a replacement mew. I’m pretty much living the creepypasta story “strangled red”. “In a game that cheated me, why should I play fair?” XD
