Been a life long Bobby fan but watching Donnie and Bobby race race was why I loved the sport in the late 60’s and 70’s

What a great conversation with Donnie. He's got a wicked sense of humor, but we can also see there are some things that continue to annoy him to this day. Like others, I'd never heard the story about the postrace protest from the 1979 Daytona 500.

I am so glad to have found this video. Donnie is the greatest and he is straight-forward and doesn't pull punches and says what needs to be said. I admire him and that is what makes him so great. Been many years since I have seen him and he looks great.

Thank you Garage Shop for these interviews and everything else you provide. I grew up a bit south of Daytona and attended my first 500 in 1972. We were in the infield 1st turn and I remember like it was yesterday once the race started, on the 1st lap I thought they aren't going to be able to make the turn, they are going to fast and it sounded like thunder. AJ Foyt won the race and I went to every 500 up through the mid 80's. Donnie Allison and so many others...these were true race drivers and some of the bravest men I have ever seen. When you look at the cars they were driving, at those speeds it is almost unbelievable. I was just a kid way back then, but between these race drivers and the local short tracks we went to in Central Florida, those were the best times of my life. Thanks again!

Awesome show in my opinion Donnie Allison is the #1 most overlooked driver in history as well as Bobby but not as bad…Donnie doesn’t get near the credit he deserves the man was a mans man even for his time period he is just a pure racers racer he didn’t do it for the fame or fortune he done it for the thrill of winning just like he says here he didn’t run some races because he didn’t feel like he had the equipment to win so he went to his local track and got a trophy! Donnie Allison was as good as if not better then Bobby but just didn’t catch all the right breaks!

You are correct on pretty much everything you said about Donnie. If he would have run more races, who knows.

Me and my father-in-law Ken Johnson had the pleasure of playing a few rounds of golf with Donnie. He had moved to Salsbury N C to build Dave Allison’s Grand National cars with his sons. He was just as competitive playing golf as he was driving a race car. Great memories for sure.

I like this era of NASCAR because they were average guys that had the passion just to race and the money they made was just to earn a middle class living , do more racing and not to just build a "brand".
