Sig Sauer Spear LT vs Sig MCX Virtus

lets take a look at what has changed on the third iteration of the MCX

The MCX is a rabbit hole. Initially, I was pretty impressed with MCX, and it's ability to swap out barrels. I ended up buying a 14.5 Vertus, later I bought 16 and 11.5 barrels. Because I got tired of re-zeroing everytime I swapped barrels, I ended up buying another upper thinking that I would like this platform so much better than the standard ARs. Well, I was totally wrong. Because Sig Sauer barrels run about 650 per barrel and the upper is around 1200 (with the barrel). After making my purchases, it clicked that I could have saved a ton of money by sticking with the one lower (my PWS mod-2) and then buying mission specific uppers and optics. The added benefit of going this route comes in the form of parts compatibility, plus I don't have to worry about a company making making my $1,800 plus rifle obsolete with a proprietary new/re design.

That's how sig operates. Puts guns on the market and let's the consumer be the beta tester. Release a new model when they figure it out leaving everyone with the previous version shit out of luck. Sig is in the same boat as colt and remington. Riding the name of what they USED to be.

@@johnc5330 aftermarket or msrp? And are you comparing ar-15’s with ar-180’s??? Ar-15’s are the more common platform so it’s easier to Cut corners. A $1400 noveske upper with an aero lower and alg parts kit with act trigger will run you around $1700 but a complete noveske rifle is $3300. Also none of the people you name dump millions into research on these platforms for the military they kinda just recreate what others have done besides Lwrc. An example is bcm with the mk2 system being an improved vltor system. I’d say that info you have is technically true but flawed as hell. It’s 2 different platforms. Also the Lwrc piston guns aren’t cheap and geissele doesn’t even make a piston gun. So… what you are comparing isn’t actually a thing. A super duty has the msrp of $2400 and the spear lt has an msrp of $2500.

The fact that Sig is getting away from the "quick change" barrel system is a surprise to absolutely no one. There is no commercial rifle in existence that has succeeded with a "quick change" barrel system. The 556XI, the ACR, the MCX, and even the XCR have all failed to even come out with barrel change kits, let alone make quick changing barrels a thing, and two of those guns aren't even made anymore. Also, it's getting really old for Sig to change the rifle every two years. Every time they made modifications it always obsoletes most of the components on the older generation, meaning finding replacement components will become harder. In two more years, even the Spear LT will have been replaced by another MCX labeled gun. I'm just not gonna chase that squirrel. I can buy PWS or a LWRC and still be able to find new parts for it 5 years from now. Rifles aren't supposed to be smart phones. We don't need a new one every year.

I agree. After my virtus experience I don’t think I’ll get another one. LMT makes a good rifle, and their quick change barrels are actually available. Waited over a year to even see a virtus 16 in stock.

The gas settings are normal (- setting) and adverse conditions (+ setting). Shooting suppressed should be under the normal setting as well. Sig themselves says this.

For those wondering; 16" Virtus complete upper w/factory handguard is 5.54lbs. 16" Spear-LT complete upper w/factory handguard is 5.20lbs. Bonus aftermarket rails on Virtus: 16" Virtus complete upper w/Mid West (slim) 15" handguard is 5.22lbs. 16" Virtus complete upper w/Mid West (slim) 12.5" handguard is 5.14lbs. Lowers are close enough in weight that it doesn't really matter.

I had no idea they were that similar in weight but despite that I do hear people saying the Spear LT has a noticeable difference in feel. And I do agree with the guy below that ounces = pounds. I'm betting you can feel it especially if the weight is shifted more towards the front.

Rocksett is designed to soften up when exposed to boiling water. Just make a pot of boiling water on the stove top. Dip the muzzle into the water for a few minutes and then remove muzzle.

@@Gunker02 I know this is a bit late, but I've soaked a muzzle device in room temp water overnight and it did work. I was able to break it free easily when I couldn't budge it before. It wasn't on a sig. It was on a muzzle I had applied rockset to myself

bought a virtus 9" full upper with conversion kit and put it on an anderson 80% lower and put a super mcx g$ trigger in it I bought used. I'm $1800 into this setup and its amazing. Have a perst 3, surefire m300c and the setup is really nice shooting with a can under nods. the adjustable piston is super awesome and the upper receiver extends so far on that I run the perst 3 almost at the end of the rail and its still on the receiver so no worries about zero loss. I also handload 300 blackout and am running really cool exotic ammo through it with no issues. This platform definitely fucks if you know how to use it. Fits in most my backpacks folded, complete game changer over an AR15

I shot the LT with a suppressor and it was great, laser accurate and looks super cool but its front heavy in a very big way. I know thats by design but imo it makes for a very unbalanced rifle and I dont think thats something that should be designed in. I hope the next generation of rifles make suppressors integral and re-balance the rifles.

(In my opinion need to remove the tax stamp status of suppressors in USA and then real innovation can happen. Suppressor restrictions are non nonsensical and a public health issue.)

I agree with the comments about being a guinea pig for sig. Not a fan of that. My virtus does not like steel case ammo, so I wouldn’t advise you try it. I also hate the fat hand guards. Makes the gun feel heavier than it needs to be.

A gent on Reddit said his LT hand guard fit his Virtus. The only mod is to drill and tap the Virtus receiver to accept the two screws used for the LT. I will doing it to mine once Sig releases LT hang guards.

Small frame models AKA the entire LT line chambered in 5.56, 300BLK and 7.62x39 DO NOT have left side charging handle, they are entirely identical controls to AR-15. The large frame Spear models chambered in .308/6.5CM/6.8x51 have the left side charging handle on top of identical AR controls.

It wasn’t a malfunction. I didn’t have it on the setting that it was supposed to be on. Now if I had a supressor with it turned to the supressed setting and I was have the same issue then I would deem it a malfunction.

Also let me clarify further on me putting “more mags through it” and it keep having problems picking up the third round or so on each mag. I used different mags for each time I swapped them. I shot 3-4 rounds, it didn’t pick up a round then I thought it was a mag problem and switched to a new mag. After the third or so attempt of trying different mags I decided i concluded it wasn’t a mag problem then had a duh moment and moved the gas setting. I didn’t mention in the video but I did not include those mags into the 850 rounds. I also shot 20-30 something rounds to zero the rifle and I also didn’t include that because I wasn’t paying attention to round count during zero. I don’t say it was a malfunction because it was my fault But if we do want so say it was a “malfunction” then it was operator error because of my incompetence. Hopefully this clears up any confusion!

The - gas valve setting is actually for suppressed and unsuppressed firing while the + is for adverse conditions and low function ammo. So unless you were firing shit ammunition then you shouldnt have been having malfunctions on the - position. Read your damn manual. if youre gonna put out a whole review on a firearm the least you can do is not spread misinformation.

SIG USA has the best warranty service in the world….they need to, with all the corner cutting hot garbage they bring to the market. I’ve owned enough SIG USA firearms to not rate them as a true self defense weapon. My personal experience only, mileage varies.
