We use a modified version of the FNC here in Sweden. During an Arctic exercise above the polar circle we had issues with the rifle freezing up and the way to fix it was to keep the rifle at the same temperature at all times. We put the rifles towards the fabric of our tents in order for them not to get warm, start to “sweat” and then cause a malfunction. We also kept the rifles completely free of any kind of lubrication. We use CLP here and it doesn’t like temperatures below freezing. Before an offensive we would “warm fire” our weapons in order to make sure they we working before the assault. This was done during temperatures raging from -11C to -33C. Regards, Nic

I would definitely say that your tests are applicable to the real world. I’m a Swede so it’s below 0 celsius a couple of months a year. No you won’t drop your rifle in a lake, but what will happen is that you take a prone position in the snow, then mount up in a vehicle allowing the snow to melt, then out in the cold again. That’s how you will most likely experience freezing. If not mounting in vehicles you might get inside a tent that’s above 0 celsius then during the morning you move out and if you didn’t wipe your rifle dry, well it’s gonna freeze.

So true. If we are talking about the swedish 10 or 20 men dome tents then we used to leave the weapons either outside of the tent (once you were out of the foxholes or not patrolling the camp) inside the wooden tent box or sleep with the weapon underneath the head pushed against the outside of the tent. The heat wouldnt get there and since the outer skirt is packed with snow, it stayed nice and icy.

Here in Alaska we have all kinds of problems with our M4's. Lessons learned: keep your rifle outside in extreme cold, the warmth cycles of inside a vehicle or building then outside creates condensation in the rifle that freezes. Mags exposed to snow will freeze ammunition together and to the walls of a mag causing failure to feed once removed from the warmth. Leave the rifles as dry as possible with very little lube, even though the freeze point is stated as stupid low it usually starts gelling much warmer and it's enough to cause malfunctions. Also make sure you're wearing a face protection like a balaclava because you will give yourself contact frost bite on plastic stocks. It's great when you go to lift your head up after a qual and your cheek is stuck to the stock Edit: same applies for pistols. I've got a P220 10mm and and P320 9mm that I've got some data on but need to spend much more time and ammo to say conclusively, but my impressions are the hammer fired steel frame performs better than the polymer striker boi. I've mag dumped till both were hot then dropped in the snow, let it sit for a few seconds, then flipped for a few more seconds, then put them on a table until they froze. Round chambered in both. The P220 fired and blew shit out of the rails and cycled no problems, on reload the mag catch didn't work until a little extra pressure was applied then it seated and ran. The P320 fired the chambered round then failure to return to battery. I had to beat the slide forward till seated then it finished the mag. Reload, no amount of finagling would get the frozen mag catch to hold a mag but I kept my support hand under the mag and it successfully and awkwardly fed till the mag was empty. Keep testing your gear and yourself ladies and gentlemen.

One guy ended up with severe frostbite in his upper lip because he idiotically kept his stock on his cheek without wearing a balaclava. @@DamageSixbut it also allow extremely easy clean up if mud get into it. You just need to dip the rifle in water for a wash or take the cover off and it will clean. Whereas for the AR, you need to completely disassemble the rifle and clean it manually, not possible in battle. I seems to me that people bring up the mud test as some sort of strawman argument for AR, when reality has shown the vastly superior reliability of the AK, especially in military settings where soldiers dont treat their guns like a expensive toy you bring out every weekend on a nice sunny day.
@DamageSix2 жыл бұрын
@@lingeringsnowleaf3829 But it's still not much of a sealed system. Rifles like the Galil or Valmet take some notes from the Kalashnikov for giving grease and burnt gunpowder a place to go to not lock up the system while still having more barriers between them and the outside world, so they take dustier or sandier environments better generally. I also think that an advantage predicated on the assumption that the user will be _extremely_ lax with maintenance in their down time doesn't entirely mitigate other aspects of a design. ergonomics, recoil impulse, inherent precision, while they're secondary to the foremost priority of going bang when you pull the trigger and not going bang when you don't, doesn't mean that these factors aren't something to consider in a trade-off. As well, "Reality has shown the vastly superior reliability of the AK" is somewhat hyperbolic. Not every entity that's reproduced the design has done much for quality control, and there's only so much that inherent design advantages can make up for that. I also sincerely hope that Kalashnikov owners don't generally assume that anecdotal incidents give them a pass on regularly maintaining their rifle. Also, if mud is a realistic and applicable circumstance to encounter that genuinely can impact the performance of the platform, does that really make it a strawman argument from top to bottom?

This test basically just confirms the extensive testing that was done in the 1980's. The Swedish military did very extensive field and torture testing of weapons available in the 1980's. AR/M16 basically did not work, AK's worked and they settled on the Galil and the FNC as the best performers (both are kalashnikov/AK47 derivatives) and chose the FNC. The US Alaska tests came to similar results. The Swiss military also got similar results and adopted the SIG 550 series, which is also basically an AK47, but in Swiss clothing. This test by Garand Thumb also shows that the short stroke piston guns like HK416, G36, FN SCAR, SIG MCX etc are not as reliable as the AK style mechanisms, even if they are better than DI gas systems. Apart from the AK varieties another reliable performer is the old HK G3 roller delayed rifle. It was used by Sweden and Norway (and several other countries with cold weather) for decades in cold winter conditions. The FAL was dropped by all Western nations long ago. The G3 kept serving as a marksman rifle or in specialist role use with special forces in numerous countries, decades after the move to 5.56 rifles was made.

@ishaandas867610 ай бұрын
True, but this covers only a singular spectrum. The short stroke gas piston systems are extremely reliable like the ak series and the DI system has also been nearly perfected to match the reliability of these systems. The ar's enclosed system means it performs better in mud, dirt and upto some extent sand environments. The Ak's looser tolerances means it performs better in colder environments and generally can be made to run in pretty much any environment. The fal with its adjustable gas system can also be made to run in pretty dirty conditions. The thing is, any competent military trains its soldiers to run proper equipment maintenance. So the difference in reliability is reduced substantially. The G3 on the other hand is such a cool rifle. Anyway, the point is that ar is more or less as reliable as the legendary ak at this point in time.

try the Colt C8 was used by Canada's army for a long time. By the way, we sometimes get something called Verglas here is Canada. Its a pretty unique winter storm that happens when a warm wind makes the air warm enough to get rain but the ground is still super cold. So when the rain dropplets hit the ground it freezes instantly. If you had your gun outside during a Verglas storm, it would get way more frozen then on your test. To the point you need a sledge hammer just to unstick your riffle from the ground. We get such storm once every 4 or 5 years so its kinda rare. Sometimes it makes just a super thin layer of ice. But sometimes its over 2 feet like in the 1998/1999 Verglas storm. Makes to trees look beautiful tho.

The test is very real. Shoot two or three magazines and drop a rifle into the snow - it will be about the same. Nobody canceled the condensate either, because of the temperature difference after firing, the "dew point" will be inside the rifle, moisture from the air will collect there and freeze. Some of the drops may well leak into the store. So I repeat - the test is quite real. AK could not fail this test a priori - in Russia, half of the territory is beyond the Arctic Circle, and for most of the second half of 5 months of the year there is snow, under these conditions AK was created. Galil, by the way, is also a development of the AK platform, so he shouldn't have any problems either. M14 surprised - I was sure that she would pass the test. Thanks for the great review. You are right - different weapons, for different climates and tasks. For its legendary reliability, the AK pays with less accuracy and convenience. Best regards from Russia.

Sort of a side thought here. I wonder how weapons from the Wild West era would fare in these sorts of conditions. Lever guns, pump actions, break actions, single action revolvers, ect. I know it got cold in the mountains so I wonder how they handled those environments.

Manual operation firearms you can just brute forcing the action into working is what im guessing, only way i think they could malfunction is if the frost had somehow frozen the hammer since a lot of them had exposed hammers
@fear6062 жыл бұрын
@@Davenzoid Yeah, I feel like lever and pump actions you could force it, but there are a few others, like single action handguns and how the cylinder would take that kind of environment, or breach loaders like the rolling block or sharps.

Of course they were good in the cold. They were built in Russia. if your rifle can’t handle the cold in Russia, that’s a critical failure.

When I was doing my military training with the Finnish military, we used the RK-62's, which is a Finnish AK-variant champered in 7.62x39. My rifle was old and most likely seen thousands and thousands of rounds. During one winter training I accidentally fell through the ice into a knee deep small puddle and the rifle got completely dipped into the muddy icy water. It was about -25C then. After about 15 minutes the rifle was completely frozen solid. I had to give it a solid whack against a tree to get most of the ice off, after which it worked perfectly and I shot 3 mags without a malfunction. AK-style rifles really are amazing in cold weather.

why get a new rifle when you can just smack it on something? AK moment
@legendaryjimbob7685 Жыл бұрын
Yep, sounds about right. Im guessing AK-style rifles were actually designed by the same people that designed old nokia phones. Those 62's were so funny, oh shit i dropped into puddle and its frozen solid, use it like baseball bat on tree and go back to shooting, what is this icing problem people have spoken about?

Just talked to a cop who had a Dr. Pepper explode in his car and get on his gun. He washed it off but…when the gun heated up it started to gum up on the inside (where he didn’t see some soda collect) it was like molasses and jammed the gun. That was his duty pistol. You just never know the random stuff you will encounter.

I’ve noticed that everything on an ak pivots. The safety, mag release, and the way that the mag pivots into the mag well. I’m guessing that helps break ice buildup away from the manual controls, everything on it is large enough to operate with heavy gloves. It’s almost like it was designed by people that live in a cold climate…
@SlashRfnR2 жыл бұрын
weird huh? Slightly higher tolerances, no deep magwell for less contact, higher leverage action on safety, not so crowded inner space. It is crude but damn does it do it's job.
