I was literally searching on the web for a "lession" in high voltages and came across your channel! I have done some high voltage experiments, but I want to learn more about HV to feel more safe. Some times guys touches their tesla coils with bare hands, but other says like "touch and you die".. I know that it depends on currents and frequency etc. but want to learn more about when HV is "safe" and when it is not.. It would be nice if you could explain this kind of stuff later in the series! Thanks for great content!

That was the first thing i did with my 15/60 NST The arcs are so warm and fuzzy Stay safe everyone and do not touch

Also, you could have saved all the time bending the coathangers by using an old set of TV rabbit ears. www.pixelsquid.com/png/tv-rabbit-ears-1272500624201619218?image=G03

A clearer explanation as to why the arc rises is because the resistance of warm air is much lower the the resistance of the cold air below it, and that as the warm air rises, the gap where the warm air is has a lower resistance, even though its a bigger gap than below.

The resistance difference of air caused by temperature is insignificant. The spark is ionizing the air into a plasma, which is conductive. the plasma is heated by the current flowing through it and rises because hot air (plasma) is less dense than cold air. Eventually the gap gets too wide for the current provided to generate and sustain enough plasma to maintain lower resistance than the small spark gap. The arc then breaks as electricity moves to the new path of least resistance at the spark gap and the process repeats.

First, I noticed that the wires start being pushed around when the arc breaks on the top. They oscillate normally when the arc is climbing. Then I thought about it for a few hours. Here's what I came up with: The force between the two wires will be attractive independent of the half cycle the secondary is at, since when one wire is positively charged, the other will always be negative. As a result, even though the polarity switches, the force will not switch directions. It will just oscillate between zero and attractive with 2*60 Hz = 120 Hz, which results in a net attractive force on average. Also when there is arc, the secondary is loaded. Therefore the voltage will be small between the wires compared to the open circuit voltage. As a result, the force will be very small. When the arc breaks, the load on the secondary is removed. As a result, we get the open circuit voltage on the secondary and an attractive force between the wires. Therefore, the wires are kicked when the arc breaks and this increases the amplitude of the oscillation.

I think the wires are wiggling because of the momentum of the electrons as they jump across are in resonance with the natural frequency of your jacob's ladder. Air currents could also be contributing.

I've been making a LOT of content (and live shows every night) on the other channel. I'm doing a lot of exploration of a power plant and working on remodeling the house a bit. Because of the remodel, my shop has been turned inside out so I haven't been making videos for this channel. If you're not subscribed to the secret channel, come check it out. kzbin.info It's where I post personal blogs, behind the scenes stuff, and a lot of my more interesting adventures. All the things I can't put on here. Plus it's got about 5 times the content that this channel does.

I'm guessing they move because the current causes magnetism, and the polarity changes as the arc moves up?

Watched all 12 videos, most of them twice. Sat down and watched them all in order from 1 to 12 to make sure I didn't miss any ways to die along the way. Even read the disclaimer (apple blossom, American robin, cherry). The end frame of episode 12 loops us back to episode 11. Is there an episode 13? Will there be?

I guess the magnetic field induced by the current makes the thing wiggle.
