Infrastructure engineer here. This is madness. I run a mesh network (nethear orbi) and can stream uncompressed 4K hdr 5.1 Blu-ray from one side of the house to the other. This looks like the kind of mad setup one of my mechanical engineers would come up with. I run a Switch/Xbox/PS4/shield downstairs, gaming pc and synology nas upstairs. Blisteringly fast and completely out of sight.

Great use of space. Definitely liked how you're controlling the air in your closet -- I run into too many installs where airflow management is basically non-existent.

One question about separate camera network. You've said that it prevents someone from accessing your home network if they access camera network, however I remember reading somewhere that vlans aren't meant for security, they are used for logical device separation and performance improvements (due to lesser amount of CPU interrupts generated on ARPs and other broadcasts). So are they a good method of isolating networks from intruders? I'm learning networking right now, so sorry if my question sounds dumb.
@lefteye129
@lefteye129 7 жыл бұрын
Дмитрий Ковалёв i am sure he will reply but VLANs are also used for security. I think he said that it will prevent access to camera network if someone gets in home network.. since they will be on separate VirtualLans, access from one network shouldnt mean data on other can be accessed... very nicely done
@TheGeekPub
@TheGeekPub 7 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The VLANs are separated by my firewall.
@BB-he9qo
@BB-he9qo 7 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great video idea. With IOT devices making people nervous, a lot of us would benefit from knowing about VLAN's and setting them up, when to use them, when not to, why you use them to segment, hardware vs software? I'd definitely like to implement it, kind of hard getting a starting point..

This video came up after I was watching a QNAP setup vid... Its nice to see that there are people out there doing things right. Too many to list from this video, but everything was smooth down to battery back-up/power-regulation & heat exhaust from network room. LOL security! Once you start its addicting! When more network cable is used on cameras than PCs, toys ect... A+ in my book!

Awesome infrastrucrure you have in there! One question though: wouldn't it make more sense to use access points such as the ones from Ubiquiti? They are cheaper than Apple, have great performance and can be powered via POE reduncing the cable mess around the sockets.

Pretty rad setup. I just moved in to a new house in January and have been building it out to my dream specs. Right off the bat I put in a 4 post APC rack, had a dedicated 30amp circuit ran for my 3000kva Rack UPS, and wired the home for ethernet. I had Fios at my Condo, but they didnt offer it here. I had to settle on a 100/10mg Cable Modem. I tied that to my Palo Alto firewall. I have Lan/DMZ/Internet zones on it. That goes out to my 2x24 port stacked 3750G-POE switch. I have at least a dozen vlans. Then for servers I have a Poweredge R710 running as an iSCSI San with a pair of R610's as ESXi hosts. I have a myriad of virtual machines. But most important to my is my Cisco CallManager enviornment, since thats what I do for a living. I also have a couple of 2800 routers to use for lab use as voice gateways. In my office I have a DX80, 8865, and a classic 1930's phone tied to an ATA. I have two Meraki AP's placed in the house. I have a Nest Thermostat, and 4 Nest smoke detectors. Then I also have 7 Lorex cameras placed throughout the house. I'm not super happy with the NVR, so I need to find a good replacement. I need to do a tour of my own when the house is finally complete.

I'm no expert on how it works, but it shares all the resources much better than ESXi when running a bunch of linux VM's. Way way less picky on drivers/hardware as well. I'm using it for opnSense (dual wan router), Windows XP (for mail server), CentOS for web server. Much better performance than running ESXi on the exactly same system setup.

I just redid my Home Network setup. I'm all in a Small Closet and using a single 8U Rack. Though I do now have a 48 port Managed Switch. It's nice a neat looking and looks professionally done. It was, by me!!! I added 9 more Ethernet cables around my house, including 2 going out into my Garage. I did this as I have future plans for some IP POE cameras and a small POE switch in the garage to power them all. I'm all about everything looking nice besides just working. I WISH I had a closet that large for my Network stuff. I know my setup would look so much nicer having that kind of space. You could put a large single Rack and have everything mounted into it that's in that room.

It's not about doing it right or wrong, it's about what works for you and your family. Would I do this or that differently, maybe, but that would be specific to my use case. Neat to see (what I would consider to be) an early adopter of home automation. The early adopters iron out a lot of the kinks and wrinkles.

RIght now I live in an apartment ,so I have a basic SoHo setup using a switch, router and modem running a cheap cable connection (cheap as in inexpensive, not a poor connection). Modem feeds to the router which handles DHCP then goes to my switch which handles bandwidth management. I have a limit set for my router and prioritized networking for my compute for work, and the other ports used for wired connections to my game consoles and home computer for the rest of the family. Nothing too fancy yet, but when I have a proper place I will be building a similar setup. Nice to see a walk through yours! Thanks for that. :D

Looks like a great set up to me, not seeing any wrong there. There's a lot of personal choice in how one wires up a house, etc. you like pfsense, I like untangle, you like airports, I like orbis, etc. all good. It's cool to see how others run things.

How people do their 'stuff' is their own business, Google's AI placed a link and you asked .. I'd add a NG/LP generator if you haven't already. In South Korea 1 Gbps cost $19! I'll probably drop Fontier once we have Google Fibre. _Cisco .. I own a data center. Chinese love to clone. I love security._ Good luck in your home hobby! 😆

South Korea's land mass is also 38,691 mi². Which is the same size as 1 US state. Indiana. I'd imagine servicing all of Korea is pretty easily done considering S. Korea's population is 50.62 million. About 1/4th the population of the USA. TL:DL - It's easier to provide gigabit for cheap when you live in a country the size of Indiana.

You would laugh at my attempt at a networking “closet” and home automation. But still, works for me. The main downside about my home automation is that it uses Alexa routines and ITTT, so it’s 100% dependent on a working internet. That’s not so great. But it’s all I can do with the budget I’ve got right now. Anyhow, thanks for sharing your setup with us! It will definitely come in handy later on when I eventually design a home setup that is more robust.

HAHA, I just watched that video too. I'd say 8-bit guys network is total craptastic. And tidy isn't a word I would use to describe that mess of cables he has everywhere. He wasn't even smart enough to use a patch panel. Geek guy's setup is superior and quite a bit more elegant.

I believe it was post update v2.3 RRD graphs stopped reporting total MB per time period. It bothered me to the point I downgraded to the earlier version, but I have since switched to a Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX for a lower power solution over a dedicated PC. Observium picked it right up (snmp) and much to my delight it had this report and many others. I got my installation (OVA)from turnkey linux, it seems to be an earlier version but it works.

No sir. Those with extraordinary claims bear the burden of proof. You prove to me its doing that. (Hint. It's not. Hint. Its been hacked and the code decompiled and literally no one has found any evidence of your claims.) And before you spew some more hogwash, tell me exactly why you fear the Alexa but you don't fear the cellphone/microphone in your pocket which not only sits on your home network but literally goes everywhere you go which has *actually been proven* that several models were compromised and implanted with NSA firmware.

Ebay has incredible, unbelievable deals, in relation to what the equipment cost a year before when some fool (or some company under contract or long term lease agreement to bend over and take 10" of un-lubed man meat by buying a $50,000 server every year or every other year. Yes, that supports SOME jobs here in America, but in reality, it supports manufacturing in China more than anything here. Hell, I bought a particular server, that 4 years previous to my purchasing it on eBay, went retail north of $475,000 in 2010. I paid $1400.....in 2014. Took a truck and trailer (to quell confusion I mean a personal one driven everyday to work and back, parked in your garage, not an 18-wheeler) to get it. Several personal, day-to-day, face-to-face friends of mine- I host their commercial retail websites on the thing. One produces worldwide orders daily. I mean literally an item is ordered every day from every continent in the world (except antarctica, though the item his company is known for, hell it's in the title of the company, are on the intended market item/device which ARE presently in Antarctica). His business is tremendously succesful, and not because I do a great job with hosting/writing some of the site/managing it, but rather because he busted his ass from 14 years ago, refused to cut the smallest corner, no matter who WASN'T looking, no matter how much more the RIGHT metal alloy was for the job, regardless of how much he could save by downgrading alloys to something that would perform 90% as well. Some people are ok with a 50% price cut to lose 10% durability. Some are not. But by only having a top of the line-line for the longest, the public knew that his 'inferior' line, aka, 'economical' line came out and he promised a performance of xxxx/xxxxxx:xxx, people knew without a shadow of a doubt that his product would do it. He was recently bought out by an international conglomerate for God knows how much. Tens and tens or dozens and dozens of millions of dollars. He said he'd never been in the position to not know what it was like to not have to worry about money ever again and that it was almost uncomfortable. Anyways, his hard work from his garage led to lifetime financial security and makes me a nice little profit as well, as the conglomerate decided to keep his business just as is, but with their purchasing power on procurement of the raw materials, they will see an astronomical return on their investment because this guy's company's real value is the name. Work hard, don't compromise, and you will never wonder or need to ask how someone afforded anything. I mean that in a positive way, not a smart ass way, I swear.

I'm trying To find the best equipment to build a secure solid bulletproof network sat a way I never have to worry about being attacked .. So I wanted To ask a big favor from you in that is maybe have a few minutes of your time one day on a telephone conversation and let me explain to you what exactly looking for in Maybe your advice on what I should do thank you sir and Definitely looking forward to your response ..
