I've been using volume pedals since the late 70's and wouldn't want to play a gig without at least one. I usually use 2. One before time based effects and one at the beginning. Sometimes I'll put a tuner before the one at the beginning so I can tune silently. Cheers guys, good informative video.

That G2 really makes it easy to demo the placement of the pedal! Only in the last year did I finally learn about placing the volume pedal in the middle of my chain, and it made all the difference in the world! This video clearly demonstrated what it took me umpteen years to finally learn! And OMG what tone coming from those amps!!!

You can put the volume pedal in the FX loop (if the amp has one) before or after you FX. That way you don't change the gain structure of the preamp.
@BeachJazzMusic2 жыл бұрын
I also have been using volume pedals since I saw Buddy Emmons use a Sho-Bud back in the early 70's. I used two. One in the front and one at the end. The one in the front gets great pedal steel effects and the one in the end works great to control the overall volume without having to get up and turn the amp down. Even though I mostly use my AxeFx III in the house now (I'm old and retired from playing gigs) I still have my Hilton volume pedal which uses RF to change the volume. It's got some controls on the underside to be able to adjust a lot of the parameters. This is the best active pedal I've ever used. It actually makes your guitar sound better.

I'm a male lead guitar, and lead vocals. I have a passive volume I use at the end of my chain, right after my boost actually. I feel I can control things a lot better, sometimes It's just I don't turn my dirt off and it's easier to use it as a kill switch of sorts. But I can switch off my dirt pretty fast and have my delay trails keep going. It sounds pretty good, I have people asking me a lot how I get my tone especially since the amp I'm using is a Fender 68 custom twin, one of the reissues, where they went with the tweed bassman tone stack in the custom channel, which I use with Mids turned almost all the way up, and the bright switched turned on. But I am really trying all sorts of things. Right now all I use is a lovepedal superlead, a fulltone ocd, and a blackout effectors musket fuzz, for dirt! For the three delays, the catalinbread bella epoch, the echorec and the Mallecko ekko 616, I have a wah, standard vox. , the boost which is a fulltone 2b and the ernie ball volume. I actually would like to get the G2 at one point to control all this. I love your products. Anyway very informative video!

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the great info! I have a mini Blackstar fly that I rigged up, and the tone is the best I ever heard in my life! From any rig. I put a little tube Pre-Amp on it 12au7 I think. Vintage Mullard tube...since I lost volume ( from the pre, or the OD pedal, or both together? not even sure). I added a mini Mosky Vol pedal to the mini "Trouble" Overdrive pedal I chained in...I'm just learning how to manipulate amp tones...I think I got really lucky here! lol. It's now pretty loud, and too loud to play it with ought bugging people near me. I got a tiny "passive" attenuator for this rig. If I heard you correctly...I should chain the Att. box after my Overdrive & Vol Pedal effects? As I'm thinking do I now have 2-volume devices kind of? The Blackstar Fly has no EFX loop in/out per se. I guess I could go in to the 1/8" "line in/mp3" too? maybe? Just put a 1'4" adapter blah blah, but that gets to be too much rigging if I can just chain it after the EFX pedals. Could you PLEASE tell me the best way to rig up this little attenuator for what I have going on here? I'm actually going to mic this rig when I record, and even play out! The tone is that amazing...I play heavy stuff. Thanks a million! Rock!

I put my volume pedal before gain, because I like to be able to get a gradual progression from clean(er) to chunk (in a build-up to a chorus, for example). But I keep the volume pedal after my EHX B9 (Organ Machine), which won't engage without a certain threshold level of input signal. This also lets me set the global organ level, which is handy. Anyway, great video!

Jordan Dedo thanks Jordan. If you can find a transparent passive volume that doesn't load your signal then Id say go passive, but most do unfortunately, but if they're going after a buffered pedal then the buffer will drive the volume pedal and you won't have any issues. Theres no substitute for getting your hands dirty and trying out a bunch. They all have their own feel. Cheers mate

Would be cool if in upcoming stuff you show using both volume knob on guitar and volume pedal in position 1 and when you go for what. Obviously fuzz would be controlled by guitar, but so would your base sound even when the fuzz isn't on since the volume knob changes the way a guitar behaves. Trying the Telonics and Lehle, hopefully going to be able to try the Telonics pro because both of these pedals change the sound due to the active circuitry. I got the Telonics standard which rolls off bottom end and really high frequencies, and it just sounds like it lacks guts... that's why I'm going to try to do the pro model. I have done blind tests with people, hoping to get all 3 of them together and put them in the switcher and go through lehle, telonics, telonics pro, and dry. They both have really really nice sweeps.

Got some questions, guys! : I´m on negotiations on having a Boss FV-300L. My intention is to put it just after the gain as you said, but in my chain I like to have a chorus. So... Did i put the pedal before or after the chorus? And there´s a fourth use. I´ve borrowed my brother´s Schaller FV-121 and put it on the FX loop of my amp ( a monster plenty of watts ) for playing at home without having riots with the neighbours. Thanks for the great video guys. I have a question though, I have a Cali76 Compressor which is usually at the very front of my signal chain as to my experience comp pedals work best when they see see input guitar signal before anything else. Now the main question is, If I have an active volume pedal, which one should be first? Imagine I want to change the gain level as well as the volume so putting the VP at first is a must, then how about the comp pedal? Is it a trade off at the end of the day? What is the best way of managing the comp and VP?
@thumbpickfingers8 жыл бұрын
+konnektlive If you want to get the same compression level no matter where you set your volume pedal, put the compressor before the VP. If you want to be able to change the amount of compression, put the compressor after the VP. This way, if you turn the VP down, you will reach a point when the signal will get little compression or no longer be compressed at all, depending on your comp. settings.

8:24 when I was doing a music course at college, we were put in different college bands each term. While there, there was this one female singer that sang too quietly. We set up the volumes for all the drums and instruments so they all worked well with eachother volume wise, but we had to constantly turn everything down and this female singers mic up just so we could hear her singing. The amount of feedback coming from her mic was annoyingly unbearable. It wasn't just me who knew about this, everyone who I was in the college bands with knew about this and had s bit of a moan about it just like I moaned about it. Also, would it make sense to put a volume pedal before the delay and reverb pedals, but after pedals such as distortion/overdrive, noise gate's ect? So then you will hear the delay of you turning the volume down on the volume pedal?

@TheGigRigDaniel10 ай бұрын
It’s possible but for an expression pedal you really want a lower resistance, around 10k. For a volume pedal your want as high as possible. Hi impedance volume pedals are usually 500k. Lower values work for buffered signals

I love this show, theres always something good I learn in every episode. To be clear though, a passive volume pedal after OD and before delays will retain the high end frequencies? brian patrick HI Brian. A passive volume pedal after an ENGAGED OD will retain the top end, but if its in the middle of a true bypass series of pedals can suck your tone. An active pedal into germanium fuzz can cause issues as well. Hope that helps
