I personally don’t recommend propane as a fuel for a generator when camping. I use propane on my backup generator at home. However, propane puts out less power than gas, it is harder to transport, I don’t want to use my same propane to fuel my generator that I rely on for my furnace, water heater, and stove. For reference a 20lb (grill size) propane tank will last about the same amount of time as 5 gallons of gas. If you are deep in the woods which is easier to find gas or propane? Now if you only want to go for a day or two you can probably make it work

I also have the Predator 3500, and didn’t want the hassle of lifting it all the time. I don’t have a 5th wheel, but a bumper pull trailer. I bought a generator rack that mounts on the front of the trailer, over the batteries and tanks. Instead of strapping it down, I made wheel locks. Bought some chain that would fit between the wheel and generator housing. Cut to length, and bolted each end to base with the chain lapping over the wheel. When you tighten the bolts, it’s cinches down on the wheel. Cover most of the chain with heat shrink tubing which protects and snugs chain between wheel and housing. It also aids in security for theft. I also cut a hole in the bottom of rack to drain oil. Predator nailed it with the design of draining the oil. I also extended the 2 small drain and air hoses using drip irrigation couplers to prevent gas from dripping onto rack. I never have to remove generator for maintenance. Thanks for sharing your project!

Good comments about the carbon monoxide dangers. CO2 detector is an absolute essential! I have a Honda generator on the back side of my 5th wheel, in a box, separated from the trailer. Ran it this way for years. This past year, I added a CO2 detector in the kitchen area interior. Much to my disbelief, it has gone into alarm three times despite the RV being sealed up with doors and windows closed. My exhaust is 3' away from the closest exterior wall. Had no idea the CO2 was leaching into the coach. Now I will always have the CO2 detector operating. I do mostly boondocking so I use my generators 1000s of hours. My last one had 6000 hours on it when I sold it. I wonder how many times I exposed myself to the dangers of CO2. Just because it didn't kill you, It can damage you, permanently. Subscribed as a I am another OCD perfectionist. Glad I found your channel.

Brilliant! Even though my RV, Honey is pretty small, she does have a built in generator. The thing is, she’s a 1992, and the generator is too. It used the gas from the engine, which is really handy. It’s just REALLY noisy! So, I only run it for short times when I need the power over a short period. I do have some solar, which is great for times I’m sitting fir days in the sunshine. But, I also carry a Yamaha generator for times I need power over longer times. I’d love to be able to install the Yamaha in the generator compartment, but it would be a big job.

Yeah, I’ve seen people that go all out adding it to the fuel lines and such. I’d kind of like to run a power wire and transfer switch so I wouldn’t have to get the cord out, but in all actuality we usually have electric wherever we go so it would be overkill. I have to get my panels mounted soon too. The best video I’ve seen are some by Roland White... he goes all out in making the predator a legit onboard generator. I find those videos very interesting

I need to do a real review video on it... I’ve revamped my exhaust video to come. Truthfully I’m on my third one but I don’t think either are the generator’s fault. The first I had in a utility trailer and it quit starting. It would turn over but not start. I think it was the Amazon cover I had on it that I found out wasn’t waterproof. I just didn’t want to take the time and had the warranty. The second (last month) the magnet from the magnetic dipstick fell down in the crank case, it still worked fine but the warranty was about to expire (and the display wasn’t showing the output) so I traded it in, but I didn’t extend the warranty this time.

So will this run your fifth wheel ac and Fridge? What can you run with it on 30 amp service?
@GimpyCamper4 жыл бұрын
My 5th wheel is a 50 amp service but only because it’s prewired for a 2nd A/C. Since we don’t have it I almost always use 30 amp service with a smaller/lighter cord, the 50 amp cord is a beast. Technically, I run my whole camper including everything from the 15k A/C to the microwave, converter, TV... everything. However, on one of our first trips we had an issue with the dometic fridge not seeming to want to cycle on automatic when we would turn the generator on/off. So for that reason, if we are using the generator, I keep the fridge on gas the whole time. It doesn’t use much and the battery stays charged if you are using the generator

You truck technically is a generator since it has all the components of one. You just need an inverter. Try and upgrade to a larger alternator or add another to produce more dc energy. You could then add more batteries or use the one you have and just add an inverter that’s pure sine wave.
@flipnotrab4 жыл бұрын
Dylan Beamenderfer I like you idea Dylan. With all my “homework” I’ve been doing, seems like in order to get the right amount of batteries/battery you start hitting a “weight problem” as well as size and cost. Obviously, batts are superior “NOISE” wise, but cost/weight of the REALLY good ones just complicates the final decision. Another factor that is helpful, some of these SWEET batteries are now offering 10 yr unlimited warranty w no restrictions (Uh, unless you catching it on fire I’m guessing). My guess is eventually we RV- FOLK will be able to go ALL batt power 👍

In my opinion propane is not a good fuel for camping. #1 you make less power. #2 from what I can gather 20 lb of propane lasts roughly the same as 5 gallons of gas. If you are out in the boonies (probably are or you wouldn’t need the generator) which is easier/closer to pick up? Filling your propane or getting 5 gallons of gas? I think propane or natural gas are great ideas for emergency power (if you have a large tank or an unending supply)

I don't personally prefer to use propane for my generator while camping. I do use it for my backup generator at home. I would rather take a gas can or two and not worry about running out of fuel for my stove, griddle, fridge, water heater, or furnace.

Use the 30 amp plug. Otherwise, you are wasting at least a third of your power.

What? I never said not to use the twist lock plug that I know of.

Why is it nobody cares to Kno how loud it is in the 5th wheel
@GimpyCamper4 жыл бұрын
It’s not that loud, there is a little vibration but it’s really only noticeable in the bedroom, but I have slept all night with it running a couple times

Why don’t you install it like they do a motorhome like an awning generator closed in the hatch put a vent in your door and run exhaust outside

You can get better brand from Home Depot like Generac iq3500 much better quality for like half price of this made in crappy China. Harbor freight is all crap. Then when something goes wrong in just a week. You return it they charge you $200 restocking fee. Vs Home Depot no question ask full refund.

Being I do sub-contractor warranty & repair work for Gener-crap I’ll politely have to disagree with you here. I’ve seen more winding issues w Gener-crap than ALL other generators COMBINED. I’m not just talking portables, but home units as well. They, Generac, made some BIG agreement with a rather LARGE power company (that will remain nameless!) for ALL their home back-up install units. Many blow up just on the monthly/bi-weekly auto-check runs. Trust me, I’ve never dealt with more angry rage filled homeowners than Generac ones after big storms. Yes, they kill the messenger yet I didn’t sell it to them. Considering they already have all the sub-equipment to hook ANY genset to their home, I’ve seen a number of owners get their $ back and invested in a serious Honda unit.
