The Newton Gravity III Review: • 2014 NEWTON GRAVITY II...
So after a few months, I finally got my hands on a pair of the new 2014 Newton Distance III and guess what? I really like them! After a bad experience with the Newton BOCO AT, I was skeptical of some of the new Newton tech, but am happy to report that the Newton Distance III stay true to form and rock for us midfoot/forefoot strikers. It feels just like the Newtons I'm used to and reminded me why I like them.
While my major fault with this shoe revolves around how long it takes to really break-in the lug system - expect 40+ miles before you really fell that "pop" - there are a number of new things I really enjoy. The upper is fantastic. I think the new materials they are using are awesome, super soft, light and airy. The shoes themselves are fairly light (7.8oz) and will work very well for training and/or racing. Especially with the new lateral heel rubber which helps reduce wear-and-tear on the exposed EVA.
Comparing this shoe to the new Gravity III is a bit of a no brainer. While comparing Gravity and Distance shoes of Newton past, I could see why you would choose to run in both for various scenarios. But in this particular model year, I really feel that you get far more bang for your buck by sticking with the Distance III for all your needs. While the shoe is still VERY expensive, it's a better deal than the $175 Gravity III and performs just as well - if not better.
For you Newton-philes out there, have you run in either the Gravity III or Distance III? Let me know in the comments below what you think of the shoes and if you're as excited about them as I am? Also, have you seen some of the new models such as the FATE, KISMET or AHA?

Thank you for a great review! I have been running in the Distance U since 2011 and have completed 4 marathons wearing them. But Newton has been marketing these for mid-distance suddenly and I wasn't sure if something had changed. You answered ALL of my questions. This was fantastic!

I've been looking at grabbing a pair of these for some time now. I've actually never had newtons but that lug system sounds so efficient, especially since I've converted to mid foot striking. Thanks for the review Ethan, I might just buy a pair!

As allways Ethan nails it ,I use on trail 1010v2, long haul on Energy NR, shorter ones in Kinvara 3 and now this will be a piece of mind , and picking these is not by accident Thank you Ginger

As usual, I love your reviews, Ethan. One small note: I noticed that when you hold the shoe (or other item you're reviewing) too far in front of you it appears out of focus.

My dad got his Gravity 3's and my Distance 3's for $30 each. We found them at a "Second Sole" after people returned them to the store. They are my go to race shoe for 5k - 10k!

Ethan is so right about the durability of the shoe being dependent upon how pure your stride is! I get maybe 200 miles out of a pair of newtons due to stride issues.

I own these shoes as well as previous versions of the distance and gravity. I agree that this is a better shoe. I usually get about 1000 miles out of my newton (6months). I didn't think the break in was too bad with this model. I basically was using them out of the box without issue. This new line is far better in the snow and rain as well. I do easy,and long runs as well as workouts and race in these. Love em.

Ethan. You say that Newton take time to get used to otherwise your calf will blow. Do this go for runner that already are used to run in shoe with low drop and have a fine forfoot strike?
@800baileyc
@800baileyc 10 жыл бұрын
yes but not to the same extent. I already had a mid/forefoot strike when I picked up a pair of Gravity 3's and I experienced some calf irritation. It's really more about getting used to the lugs and breaking the lugs in, once you do that they are a dream to run in.

I also like the Newton Distance very much. However, the part where the 5 lugs are located came loose on both shoes after 300 miles. I received a new pair and I hope the problem does not return. Am doubting to buy a next pair of newtons though; the price is very very high. What would you recommend as a good alternative with a similar weight/heel drop?
@kristofdeborle
@kristofdeborle 10 жыл бұрын
By the way, the recommendation you did on splitting the lugs in 2 parts would probably prevent the lugs coming lose. So that is definitely a good advice for Newton!

I am intrigued by this version and I am still running in my 4 lug motions and Distance Elites. My question, though, is if the 5 lug system is so much better, why is the Distance Elite still a 4 lug shoe?

Hello! I get shin splints pretty frequently when running longer than a mile on pavement for consecutive days. I have to mindfully pay attention to my striking as I constantly strike on my heel, and to my understanding; that could be the cause of my shin splints. Do you think this shoe will help discipline my striking?

~40 miles break-in period? Just tried them in store and out of the box I didn't like the lugs, I wonder if it would get better after the break-in period...

Curious how you compare this shoe to the Altra The One2 you reviewed recently. Which one do you like better?
@TheGingerRunner
@TheGingerRunner 10 жыл бұрын
Altra One2. But these are a different shoe entirely. Newtons serve a very specific purpose and for those who are already running in them this is a fantastic update.

I had no idea what a _lug_ was (or how it's spelled) and I'm still not 100% sure what it is ... the only thing I know for sure, is that Ethan loves them and prefers 5 over 4 of them :-)

Hi, after running Brooks, I am finally going to give a try to Newtown. Does anyone have tried them in rain, on wet side walks.. I live in a rainy place and I am always worried a bit of stability.

TriWayne62 Thanks a lot. I have already made more than 100 miles in Distance III. I like them and they work well on wet surfaces. I just decided to buy a pair of Energy Nr for my recovery runs, since they are on sale. At least the Distance will last longer.
