My mother trained as a hairdresser in the 1930s and worked as such after WW2. She was most annoyed to have to give up because "officers' wives don't work"! I do wish that I'd learned from her before her first stroke but there wasn't much interest in vintage styles in the 1980s and 1990s. I have both her scissors and her thinning scissors which I use to take the weight out of my fringe. I trim any split ends when I see them, trim my fringe every few weeks when it gets in my eyes, and go once a year to get the length evened up as it's difficult for me to do as it's below my waist. I lost around a third of my hair with chemotherapy so it'll take some time to be as full and even again.

Fantastic tutorial Christine, I have also been cutting my hair since the pandemic, but I’ve recently managed to find a hairdresser local to me who has given me a midi haircut which I’m really happy with. Fantastic job and always wonderful jazz music on your videos… Great to see you back. 🎉😊❤

I've been cutting my hair for years. I got one of the purse size Joe Bonomo books at an estate sale all about 1960s hair. This little book talked about how to correctly cut your own hair. I have medium thin hair, my hair was thick and due to peri-menopause my hair has thinned. I went to Walgreens and bought myself some hair cutting sheers. What I do now to cut my hair I make sure my hair is completely dry, the books stated to never ever cut hair when it is wet that is rule one. This way you will 100% see the real length of your hair. And all I do these days is I just trim my ends by giving the ends of my hair a twist and cut the ends of my hair. My hair does not come out straight across it has a little U shape to it, I also make sure the length of my hair is up to my collar bone nothing longer than that. And I also do the same with my bangs I call them my half-moon cut bangs, I just make sure my bangs are nose length, nothing longer.

Thank you. This video is exactly what I've been waiting for. 18 mths ago, I decided to grow out my pixie cut, which I hated but didn't know what else to do. The wet set has been life changing....really has. Now I know how to trim my hair to get it to the right shape. I'm so much happier with the way I look now, I'm also dressing mostly vintage too. That's down to you.

I have a KZbin channel, and did try the horshoe haircut - and even tried to go vintage on my channel. It is now set to “private”, as it didn’t feel authentic to me. I have found my happy medium of having an old fashioned look that isn’t outright vintage. But I LOVE watching these vintage tutorials! 😊

Thank you so much for making this particular video. I really needed this! I have been cutting my own hair since the start of the pandemic. I have chronic illnesses and am immunocompromised, so I still don't leave home unnecessarily. I've been experimenting with a few methods for getting the beautiful classic U-shape that you have, but I just have not been able to find the right technique for me. Out of desperation, I cut it all very short. My hair type is quite similar to yours. Now that you made this video, I think that I can grow my hair out again and finally be able to cut it just in the way that I have been wanting. P.S. I have been following your blog/videos for years! You are so beautiful! Many thanks from a fellow US expat (in Denmark).

I go to a fabulous hairdresser who specialises in vintage styles, unfortunately to get there it's a 90 min train ride with two changes each way. Lately the trains have either been cancelled or replaced by buses which means a two hour trip each way. I really feel like I'm messing her about cancelling each appointment so , after that long winded explanation, I'm going to have a go at cutting my own just to maintain it until the train companies get their act together. Thanks for the tutorial Christine, you made it look very achievable.

You mentioned that once you set the hair it will last for days. How do protect and secure the curls while you sleep (when they aren’t in pin curls), and how do you restyle those curls each morning?
@TheGlambassador

Sometimes I wear a silk bonnet or headscarf, but not always. Each day I do a different style depending on how my curls are evolving. I did a video series a while back called "The Life Cycle of my Wet Set", it shows the different hair styles I do throughout the week from my weekly wet set. That might help you with some inspiration.

Thanks for such a wonderful video. This is by far the best tutorial out there. I'm definitely going to use this tutorial soon. I desperately need a haircut 😂 I've been cutting my own hair for 12 years now and since then I've only been to a hairdresser 4 times and I regret every single one of them. I'm a bit frustrated with my hair at the moment. I've been loosing chunks every day for a few weeks now. I'm 4 months postpartum and it's scary how much hair I'm loosing so I've been reluctant to do a wet set or anything that could stress my scalp at all.

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I also desperately needed a trim and money being tight it is nice to keep those 50€. ^^ I watched it for like 3 days and finally cut my hair yesterday. I haven’t done a wetset yet but I’m pretty pleased with the result. ❤ I mostly set my hair for the stage (I do burlesque performances) and have rather fine wavy hair so I thought it would also help regarding the forgiveness of this haircut and it seems good to me.

This was a wonderfully informative video! Thank you! Would it work to do this cut but keep more length? I’m thinking mid chest length. I have naturally curly/wavy hair and wonder if it will still look good when I don’t style it?
@TheGlambassador
@TheGlambassador 4 ай бұрын
Yes, it should work with your length. You may have to make some adjustments on the depth of the U shape for your length for your preference. But this is a great cut for those who don't set their hair all the time. Let me know how it works out.

Lovely video! My hair is pin straight but very thick so I normally struggle with cutting my own hair so I as well normally will wait as long as I can before getting a hair cut. During the pandemic I would flip my hair upside down and cut across. It was not perfect by any means but at least with a roller set the hair cutting mistakes where not as obvious lol , and when the hair gets too long that is when hair nets are a necessity lol

I’ve been cutting my hair for a couple of years now. I like the way your tutorial was easy to follow. I do a wolf cut type trim and my hair is curly like yours. I also do a vertical snip on the ends after the trim. I’m new to your channel. Do you color your hair? We’d hat do you think of highlights as pertaining to vintage style? Thank you
@TheGlambassador
@TheGlambassador 29 күн бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I do color my hair, at this point it's just to cover my greys not to change the color. People have been lightening their hair for ages, but the modern highlights weren't really common in the 1930s and 1940s. It was more all over color. That's not to say that you can't have a vintage look with highlights in your hair, you absolutely can. Most highlights are done to replicate how your hair might lighted naturally by the sun, so I don't think it would throw off the look if they were done that way.

I went to a local hairdresser & asked for a pageboy. I asked her if she knew it…that it’s a U-cut. She said yes & I showed how much to cut off. “No problem”. I could have 1 very thin, wispy layer, slight taper in front in 1 layer. Towards the end, she used scissors to razor cut a bazillion layers. My U is a few inches longer and is disconnected from the rest of my hair & looks like a pull tab.

This haircut would work well for 50s hairstyles as well, unless you prefer layering. The Middy haircut, which was really popular in the 50s has lots of layers and I've definitely not mastered that on myself yet.
