To me this film is like Blade Dunner or Dune. The story is solid, but what I’m really coming back for again and again is the atmosphere. This movie gets so much out of sound design, lighting, score, etc, that most blockbusters don’t take advantage of.

YES! “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that” and this movie has that arc for Batman. I choked up when he reached out his hand and the first person to grab it was the little boy. Matt Reeves is brilliant.
@zachwalton3544 Жыл бұрын
Right I feel like that was so symbolic. When we someone experiences trauma and is left with PTSD they can sometimes remain the age they are mentally when the trauma occurred or split off and become an entirely new person. The little boy trapped in the heap of metal could symbolize Bruce (him as a child when he experienced the trauma) and Batman takes inner Bruce by the hand to lead him to the light. Now the two personalities are simpatico.. so to speak. Idk my interpretation I suppose.
@johndiaz9190 Жыл бұрын
@@zachwalton3544 That’s exactly how I interpreted it as well. The mayor symbolized the city and its citizens behind her, but the little boy, the victim of a violent city like Bruce reaches out first. It’s Bruce saving himself first. And then the city follows him through the valley of the shadow of death. Its my favorite scene in the film easily.

To get an even better look into Edward/The Riddlers mind and motives you need to read Riddler: Year 1. It's a six issue comic based on him a year before the events of The Batman and basically explores what Edward goes through to get to that point in his life. There is currently 3 issues out and they're incredibly well written and the art suits the tone of the character so well. It's also written by Paul Dano, the actor who played The Riddler. You come to find he's not as uncaring as you assume but he's really just incredibly mentally ill and doesn't know where to channel all his negative emotions. Obviously only 3 issues are out so he's due to get more character development in the next 3 but yeah. Very good read, I certainly recommend it.

100% This!
@_somerandomguyontheinternet_24 күн бұрын
I mean, he *is* driven by morality, but it’s the self-righteous moral condemnation that many in our society have that allows them to watch on dispassionately and unsympathetically as our justice system fails time and again, basically torturing people in prison and making life ridiculously hard for them after they’ve gotten out of prison, dooming them to a cycle of crime and misery. After all, they chose to be criminals, and criminals are immoral, unlike us upstanding, moral individuals. *That* is the morality that drives The Batman at the beginning of this film, and that is the mindset that Matt Reeves wants to criticize with this film. Batman as a character is less driven by moral judgement and more by empathy. He is the Batman who congratulates Harley Quinn on being released from Arkham Asylum and the one who pays for Nora Fries’s medical care (btw that’s part of why I hope we see Mr. Freeze as the next villain in the Batman 2), the one who roots for Harvey Dent to get better and the one who sits by a hurting, scared, incredibly dangerous little girl and holds her hand as she tragically dies (huh, I seem to be describing the DCAU Batman, can’t imagine why). He’s also the Batman who carries a lollipop in his toolbelt in case a child needs it. Batman is kind, caring, and empathetic, and that’s why it’s frustrating to see the popular image of him as a brutal rich guy who just goes out at night and beats people up. “If you can’t imagine your Batman comforting a scared child, you haven’t written Batman; you’ve written the Punisher in a funny hat.”

Nice work. Good points, good commentary. Some sharp applications of modern screenwriting philosophy around character wants, needs, etc. I also like how you tied in the themes from Last Jedi, and counterpointed the flaw of Infinity War. I hadn't put my finger on why Thanos feels like an empty character, but you caught it nicely. We don't see how he arrived at his plan. He explains it, and even provides visual aids, but this just isn't the same as showing. He never actually comes together as a character, because we never actually understand who or what he is. He's just a threat. I loved this film, but I definitely feel it could have stood to make more of Catwoman and Batman's connection. I felt like Catwoman ended up getting less development than she deserved. The film does a great job early on showing Batman's total lack of interest in her needs or feelings, but I felt like this sets up the need for Batman to get schooled a little more harshly over his callousness. Not just an off the cuff mention that he's probably rich. I feel like Catwoman is the perfect character to really lay it out for him that he's not the only one in the world who's known loss. Riddler can belittle Bruce Wayne's loss, but Catwoman could come from the other side, pointing out that Batman isn't alone in his suffering. The movie touches on that, but doesn't really dig into it. Annika's death should have changed everything for Catwoman, but we didn't get to see directly how badly it affected her. That whole plotline felt clumsy, missing opportunities to strengthen the movie's core themes in order to rush to the Batmobile sequence, which felt tacked on, no matter how cool it was. But hey, that's just one man's opinion. Still probably the best Batman movie to date. Which is a miracle in itself, considering it emerged not only from the turmoil of the studio, but also the pandemic.

I remember watching the video with my mother and as soon as we went out of the cinema, the first thing she said was: "This is the first Bruce Wayne that acts in a psychologically plausible way to the trauma he suffered." Loved the idea of a Bruce Wayne being addicted to batman. To deal with trauma people often use an escape, and end up diving deeper into darkness. Bruce indulges in this escapism this to the point where Gotham suffers because he’s ignored his responsibilities as a Wayne. Really unique perspective on the character I’ve never seen before. Also the cinematography and set design is unmatched. Every single shot uses movement, perspective and focus in a unique way, not a single shot is wasted or taken for granted.

I had doubts that this movie was going to be good. I didn’t even want to read the reviews until after I saw it. I loved every moment of it, and I still do to this day.

I think matt reeves batman trilogy is gonna be the closest we'll ever get to a live action detective noir batman. And that's completely fine by me. The batman reminds me a lot of older detective movies and film noir

I just watched The Batman in black and white. It really had a good look to it. I’ve been doing that with certain movies lately. Black and white gives it something that I can’t explain.

i want to do this with the Star Wars movies
@darkknight19382 ай бұрын
@@thegoldman25I never thought to do that with Star Wars but I’m interested. I would recommend The Crow too (the original). Black and White makes that movie look even better, in my opinion.

Great video. I want to talk about the comments at the end, about choosing which films/directors to make/have. I find it interesting given what we know in 2024. On the one hand I agree, but on the other its hard to predict. While you correctly identify that the "Joker (2019)" was great in the same kind of way that "The Batman (2022)" is, 2 years later we now know that Joker 1 was an accident that happened to turn out great, and that the director was completely out of touch. Not with the lore, but with the message, the audience and the world. Not only is "Joker 2" a bad sequel and a bad film, but it turns out the message everyone got from Joker 1 was actually wrong, according to the director. The message everyone could clearly see, was that Arthur Fleck, a normal guy who struggles with lots of issues, is doing the best he can while the world ignored him and often beat him down. He tried so hard not to "go Wearwolf", but in the end he snapped. Its a story about how society failed Arthur, and how we create the monsters we fear. But according to interviews with the director, we are wrong. We're not supposed to feel sorry for him or understand him. Instead, the director seems to be more in-line with the same society that Arthur had to deal with. That Arthur should be treated simultaneously like a monster and a joke. Looking back at Joker 1 and knowing what I know now, I can see this director's warped vision, and the things we "misinterpreted", but I'm stretching and those ideas don't come naturally. I have to say, this was the most beautiful screw-up in my life time. How do you screw up your broken message so bad, that it becomes a masterpiece? Not really sure what to do with that info. I don't know how you could predict situations like that from happening? Even still, Joker 2019 was good, so in an ideal world DC would have greenlit the first film, then parted ways with the director and left it as a stand-alone film. It didn't need a sequel anyways, so I call that a win.

Although a minor character, Batman’s interactions with Penguin are my favorite. Hope to see all these actors in a future addition - they certainly left the story open for expansion (they put Riddler in the cell next to the Joker - what could go wrong there?). 😂

Despite the flaws it may have, The Batman remains as my favorite interpretation of the cape crusader mythos. I'm happy that a year from it's release people are still talking about It and i'm utterly sure that It will live up to time.

Only reason it doesn't get any Oscar recognitions is just beacuse batman is a superhero movie. Which is not entirely true, it is as realistic as possible. Mat reeves deserves much more praise nd so is Pattinson for understanding the theme and nailing it
