A really high class ramble. You started with such a focused theme and then wandered into scenery, bad drivers, bad handling, etc etc. It was very entertaining. Bikes get smaller, engines get bigger and labels become increasingly important and irksome. A bike was a bike was a bike as I remember then the race track refugees arrived and marketing changed. We are told by reviewers and marketing people what to buy, exciting, cool, rugged, we are swamped with words and things are pigeon holed for us stupid consumers. The CBF1000 is a victim of that. Be it's champion. I thought a bike was something I rode everyday, did the shopping on, went on holiday on, raced if I felt so inclined, and kept until it no longer functioned.... Don't change the bike too much.

Haha thank you :D Glad you enjoyed it. That was me really really trying to stay on topic :D I agree completely, Honestly one of the bikes I like most at the minute is the MotoGuzzi V85 TT. It's still air cooled because who really cares about high HP figures on a bike like that... I'd rather a brilliant all rounder. Agreed, I know I also do reviews but I'd always stress to people to try bikes themselves, because realistically all new bikes are incredible and I could use any of them as a daily bike!! I will sing how good a bike the CBF is from the rooftops :D Yes!!! Exactly, that's what they should and can be :) Ah I'll only change the bits I don't like :P

Good chat. It's built to a budget. So upgrading is a personal choice. Bikes are never dull. Even a C90 I had many years ago was fun. I'm 53 and riding for 36 years and had at least 50 bikes.

Yes indeed, I do maintain though that Honda could and should have done a better job with the suspension, it was supposed to be able to carry 2 + luggage after all. I hear the new NT1100 has a similar issue. The only bike I've ever ridden that I didn't enjoy was a Deuville. But to be fair to the Deuville that one was very poorly maintained. Ah small displacement bikes are the best!!

Agree with brakes, mine are same, purely basic, and get use to them but Brembos they are not. Agree with suspension, wallows a little, but for a commuter it's ok. Take panniers and box off and it's a bit more fun in twisties and at speed with rear tightened up slightly. Lights are basic also but do the trick. Self service is bit tricky with the inline 4 when getting to plugs, rest is easy. It's a good all rounder. Ride safe
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I came from very feedbacky brakes on my fazer so it was weird to start, they're fine now. I think a full set of braided brake lines and HH pads would help too but time will tell. I changed mine to a Hagon shock, made the world of difference as I don't use it only for commuting. I actually don't find the boxes a bother anyway on roads now, just needed that bit of an upgrade on the shock, I'm a bit amazed at how big a change it was! Ah I don't mind the servicing, nothing I haven't dealt with before, awkward and time consuming but better than paying for it :D You too!

I changed the topbox on my CBF1000 for a smaller box and the wobble disappeared. I did have a huge Givi trekker 52 and changed to a Monolock 37 and it’s gone. There’s also something written about the front tyre, particularly about the tread having a centre line or similar but I’m not so sure that’s just someone’s opinion or not. Still love my CBF and won’t be changing anything soon. I’m 120 kgs and my girlfriend 60kgs. We went full luggage for camping around the Highlands of Scotland two years ago without problems on the suspension but I get it that it’s personal choice for add ons. Great video again, thanks

I have the honda original one so I'd be surprised if it was due to that, I must run some tests with no box and see how it works :) The tyre is an interesting one I must check what are OE equivalent next time I'm changing them :) These ones are excellent in the dry! Oh man I loooove the bike. It's not going anywhere :) that's interesting we're about the same, maybe I just like a very firm suspension, I couldn't get used to it anyway. Also a possibility mine was shot! :) Thanks :)

The GorillaBiker I think the OE tyres were Bridgestone BT57 bit they weren’t rated highly by owners. I think most choose Michelin pilot road 4 or 5’s but I’m running road 2’s and never had a problem. They do take a mile or two to get warm and the handling feels very wooden until then but after that they’re great. What tyres are you running?
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 4 жыл бұрын
Ah ok, I had Road 3s on the Fazer years ago, or maybe it was the 2s...bloody excellent tyres and the 5s are supposed to be amazing!! Currently Dunlop Sportsmarts I think they're called. They''re actually very very good, feel in the wet is a bit meh though so I don't know would I recommend them for winter.
@sfayers3361

Regarding your final question. I have ridden and toured on a sports tourer, a Yamaha Fazer 1,000, for the last 22 years. I have switched to a BMW R1250GS for the long distance comfort, weather protection and low-mid range grunt. I'm approaching 68 years old and the Fazer's heavy clutch, bent legs, weight on wrists and getting all the winter road crap over my visor has got harder/tiring. The GS is so much more comfortable for someone my age/condition. I have a very soft spot for my Fazer, the only bike I have kept more than 4 or 5 years but all day comfort is more important to me now.

That's the best answer I think I've ever gotten to that question, makes a lot of sense and I myself just bought a Vstrom 1000 recently, the sitty uppy position is definitely more comfortable. I do miss my CBF though!

@@TheGorillaBiker I still have my old faithful Fazer Thou, the most reliable bike I've had in over 50 years of motorcycling. I was looking at your CBF 1000 videos as my youngest has passed his CBT and is doing his Direct Access for a full license. He is after my tired Fazer, but a friend of mine has an immaculate 2011 CBF for sale with less than 10K on it. Less power than the Fazer's 143bhp which could be a good thing and it has ABS.

A easy way to calm the speed wobble issue is to lift the front forks up a 1 or 2 mm in the yoke, that changes the way the weight is loaded. As for the brakes they may just need the fluid changing and hh pads all round.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 4 жыл бұрын
As in lower the front end, or raise it? It's since a lot better as I fitted a Hagon shock - it really seems to have fixed a lot of small issues with the handling. They have brand new fluid and pads, from what I can find they're just not the most feedbacky of brakes. I'll get steel lines at some point which will hopefully help.

Manufacturers shelf life for shocks is 15 to 20,000 miles about the same as chain and sprockets. The steering wobble is probably the rear damping loss of control and your a big heavy lad! But that bike aint boring, its a real useable bike and many riders would benefit by owning a good road biased machine!

Yes indeed, but this shock had only done 10800 when I got the bike and is spec'd for a big tourer so I really did expect better. It's definitely partly due to the rear but it's also a known issue with Mark 1 CBFs apparently, I did a bit of digging on forums afterwards :) But definitely every bike I'll ever own I'll need to get the suspension re-sprung for my size, it makes such a difference!! Great video! I live in Canada and I have a 2011 Biffer as well, a MK2 version. Installed a single side Leo Vince exhaust (much better), I had a buffering issue with the stock windshield where the wind noise/turbulence was terrible hitting my helmet. I put 10 mm spacers behind the windshield (between the shield and the rails) to get it away from the fairing a bit and it cured that big time. Yes, the suspension is crap. A thicker oil in the forks helped it. I have the rear set to position 6 because I hate eating lettuce and it was better but not great. But overall, I love the bike, it's smooth, lots of power, stable on the highway for high speed cruising but it's a bit boring in the turns. I might try one guy's suggestion here to raise up the fork tubes a few mm and see how it feels.

That CBF is a great bike and not a dull one from any point of view All bikes have pros and cons. Here are 5 things I hate about my Rocket: the price, the fuel economy, the shitty load capacity of the bags, its lack of symmetry and the heat on my right leg at slow speeds. Still, I would 100% buy it, even being the most illogical bike ever. The GS and similar bikes have many pros. They are really very very comfy for long rides, they're easy to handle, they handle bad roads to perfection, they have lots of usually helpful electronics (heck, you can even tune the suspensions on the fly with the touch of a button), they can handle lots of cargo, they have a long range (the R1250GS Adventure comes with a 30 liter tank) and most are very reliable bikes with low maintenance and long service intervals. No surprise they're popular. Going off road is a reason but a not a very good one, I'd say 90% of the people who buy a GS doesn't ever go off road. They have their cons too, starting with the fact that they're expensive and utterly ugly.

People are crazy tho, they look at the peak hp number and just think that means it's dull... Haha that's a special bike though....you could have 100 things you didn't like and it'd still be an incredible machine to have to ride whenever you want...I'm a little jealous :) Agree on all points, the looks is honestly my biggest thing, I don't hate how they look but I much much rather how a bike like the CBF looks. I know all the big old protective stuff has a function but still. 30 litre tank is class for touring to be fair. They're also insanely expensive when they do break!! And expensive to begin with as you say.

They are definitely limp due to the way they're put together, but I think in general they're just not a strong brake. I've used the bike on track since and still think they could be a loooot better. The front forks are definitely a bit divey too, if you do rebuild them throw in some progressive springs for the road, they made a huge difference to the other bikes I used them on!

Actually, I like the stock exhausts, they are a lot quieter and more civilised. It's better for the part of the world I live in, which is more densely populated. I never experienced the wobble or had any complaints about the suspension, I don't ride it hard, but quite sporty, but maybe it's a weight thing with more weight on the back of the extra bars and the case? I actually drove this bike without all the options, so no lower faring or any bars or cases, which I prefer the look of, it looks more sporty and less utility. And to be honest, as a weekend bike (how I use it) all the available torque makes it so nice. You can just cruise along in towns, but really open the throttle. It's not extremely fast, but you can easily hold your own with the torque all over the rev range. Just my humble opinion! I liked the vid and I think your points are valid! I was a bit shocked by all the comments (confirmation bias, maybe?). Otherwise! Awesome bike!
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 4 жыл бұрын
Each to their own :) A few people have said they prefer them quieter but I also didn't like how they looked! I think calling the quieter exhausts more civilized isn't really true tho, the 400mm cans I fitted are still pretty quiet. I am by no means a hooligan 😂 The wobble is a well known issue once you add the top box apparently so that'd explain why you didn't get it :) I'm also a big lad! I also prefer the look without the boxes but it's my main mode of transport so I need them :) The lower fairing I do prefer the look of :) I don't see that I said anything to disagree with the torque talk? I completely agree there! That's the beauty of opinions on things like aesthetics and noise etc, you can't really be wrong seeing as each of us have valid opinions and thoughts on our bikes :) I don't think it's confirmation bias tbh, a lot of people like louder exhausts etc. I've never discouraged differing opinions on here either! I think maybe this time a lot of people who were looking up CBFs agree with me 😁 Absolutely awesome bike. As I said, I don't really hate anything on it but I was asked to make a list of the 5 worst things :)

The hate is not that strong in you ;) I am thinking of getting sth more powerful then mine. These CBF are quite cheap right now, even bikes without ABS are often more expensive. But many 4cylinder bikes I rode, although performing nice, just did not feel that emotional to me. New CB650 - when you feel the power starts to kick in you are already faster then allowed. Or you drive it in high rpm range which sounds just annoying to me. CB1300S - the power is delivered so smoothly, i didn#t even notice I was that fast. Nice bike, excellent cruiser, but somehow i just didn't feel entertained. Why so torquee and no 6th gear?? CB900 Hornet (919) - oh ... that felt awesome. It even scared me a little when i demanded more power ... and got it :D but the lack of ABS and the prices for these old bikes feel just not adequate. Loved the sound of the original exhaust, sometimes less is more. My NC ... well not really that fast. However when I shift a lot to keep it in the sweet spot it doesnt perform that bad on the narrow side roads. This is surprisingly entertaining for me, but sometimes more power would be nice. I think for travelling the CBF1000 would make completely sense, but I fear it might be not that performing on the fun and emotion part.

Haha I'm not a hateful person what can I say :D Yeah you can pick CBFs up for very good money at the moment in places, which is mad as they're honestly brilliant! ABS is not brilliant so that makes more sense :D Were they stock exhausts? This bike was kinda boring until I changed mine. Now it's awesome. Yeah a lot of bikes like that can be too fast for some roads gearing wise, but you can always re gear them if you want to accelerate faster but go slower. Older style gearbox is all and space, sometimes more torque makes it harder to add more gears as due to the space the gears in a 6 speed would then be too weak. I don't like ABS tbh, I much prefer my bikes braking feel without ABS. I don't like stock exhausts ever so far, I've yet to find one I don't want to change :D The 919 is a brilliant bike. I've ridden an NC, great bike no doubt but wouldn't be for me. I prefer something a little bit more powerful too :) I can tell you that the CBF with a good exhaust is plenty fun and emotional on good roads :) I've ridden this a lot at this point and absolutely love it :)

The wobble gets discussed a LOT - it can be caused by tyres obviously (Road 5's are amazing on this bike..as I just found out) but a key issue is the topbox. Mine gets wobble when I have the topbox on and sometimes when I just have panniers, with no topbox, but panniers are unevenly weighted. Take all that off and I can (and have..in training) ride hands free, no issue (not on public roads officer). You can mitigate it a little by adjusting the shock but generally...it seems like it's just really sensitive to rear weight.

Indeed it does. To be honest I'd say it is the topbox/weight on the back as you say. I've not had it with them off whereas with the topbox on I can feel it was to start even if I sort of let go. Interesting, so you enjoy torturing yourself then, important information :D How long have you been gone for? Ah yeah I must get back across to Wales and England at some point on the bike too, Scotland was knocked off the list for this year, Guinness wasn't bad there either in fairness! Sound! :)

That's another for the list for sure. I disagree tho, just after ticking over 12,000 miles on it and I have some gripes still :D Brilliant bikes and I absolutely love it but my points on the brakes and suspension stands especially. They should have come with more capable suspension especially imo. Don't even get me started on that stock exhaust :P

A bike I hope to own at some point tbh! Even though last time I was on one it hurt my shitty hip. I don't actually hate anything reaaaaaaally about the CBF, anything that annoys me I fixed/will fix. I have yet to see a bike I think is perfect for me off the bat, but I like tinkering :)
