I grew up around dredgers, barges, ferries, and all manner of commercial vessels. In dead calm conditions we'd often move a 1200 ton ferry a hundred feet up the wharf by hand. Even a single person leaning back against the rope would have it noticeably moving in less than two minutes, so this car could definitely move that ship in around 20 minutes. Best wishes all, Cheerio😃

But that was the purpose of a fortress at the time and it was always a fortress, before archaic Greece to ottoman empire. Considering that I've moved an icebreaker I was working on with my bodyweight and a 2x4, it's not at all surprising that a car would move the ship. As usual, Clarkson took an overly aggressive approach, but that's kind of his modus operandi.

EarthKnight; "Overly Aggressive" is a very kind way of saying he brutally and needlessly abused that vehicle. I seem to have made a sub-career of using undersized equipment to do oversized jobs without destroying the equipment. Here is how you do this job: Launch the car and develop as much tension as you can in the tow rope without permanently deforming the body of the car and then brake hard to hold the car in position (trans in neutral, clutch engaged, engine idling) while the tension in the tow rope works on the inertia of the ship to get it moving. When the tension in the tow rope subsides to perhaps 25% of maximum slack off the rope and repeat step 1. Since the ship is now moving a bit the tension in the tow rope will subside more quickly. Rinse and repeat as necessary to get the ship where you want it. Smoking tires and burning clutches are NOT necessary! Be aware that the momentum built up in the ship will have to be dissipated somehow when you want it to stop moving. The car can only accelerate the ship, not decelerate it. The engine has the power to do this job, but the drive train is designed to apply that power to accelerate a 1 tonne mass, not a 13,000 tonne mass. Clarkson's job here was NOT to move the ship. His job was to make "good" television with lots of smoke and flames to appeal to an audience that likes to see (somebody else's) vehicle abused. He was certainly successful at this job!

I once watched a very big ship being launched and the head man at the yard put his hand on the side of the keel and pushed the boat forward with the friction of his hand. The ship was on rollers but he said they often had to give ships a push by hand down the slipway. Strongmen challenges pulling a truck are also quite common. Its really all about overcoming inertia rather than moving the weight itself. The springy rope definitely was part of the reason the ship moved though. The energy was stored in the rope as the car moved forward and then when it sprang back it pulled the ship forward. Like a force multiplier effect.

@@Thunderstormworld Although at some speeds the resistance (drag) through water is huge, keep in mind that the basic components of ship`s resistance are 1) wave making, 2) Wave braking and 3) frictional. All three components are predominant at higher speeds (especially the wave making). So towing at such a low speed actually (almost) only requires a force to overcome the huge inertia and give a tiny bit of acceleration. After that the ship will continue moving ahead for several meters due to her huge inertia once again.
