Update on Our Akbash Livestock Guardian Dog

We got our Akbash livestock guardian dog - Blue- a little over a month ago. Blue has had both medical and emotional compilation since he's been with us (scours, joint and tooth issues, and depression). He's been treated by a vet and there's been some improvement but we are having to ask ourselves if he is fit for duty.

Ahhh BS, he has a broken tooth and exposed root - won't eat, won't work, lies around... and more BS, "Vet says the tooth will fall out, ahhh BS, no vet would EVER allow a dog to suffer with that pain... You know I don't get in here and write negative things...but b/c I was a Vet Assistant I feel your breeder should be ashamed of himself for selling you a dog with obvious medical issues. He should give you new puppy for free. He should let you keep Blue and be grateful that you guys are caring for him correctly with the veterinary care he has obviously been in need for quite some time. I think the depression will ease with time as you guys continue to love him and as his physical pain lessens with the meds. I pray you aren't forced to send him back. 😐

The day I saw him, I thought that the seller knew exactly that he was taking advantage of you. It was obvious something was wrong. I was shocked to hear he was only 6!! He looks and acts like a 12 yo dog. He was not being taken care of properly. God brought him to you because he needs you. I believe he will get better with time and for the joint pain, I would love to see you try glucosamine with chondroitin. I used it with my 12 yo lab and she started moving like a youngster! It took about 3 weeks before I saw the huge transformation. Please give it a try. Love your channel.

The breeder is obviously unethical as hell and should be reported. Also, any guardian dog should be raised as a puppy with it's flock and should have at least another dog to work with, and a good breeder will tell you that. Please don't return this dog to the breeder.

I agree Peter. He may have been beaten or wounded or both. It isn't normal at all. His current issues with stiffness are quite possibly the result of very poor treatment. The way he behaved in the first video is that of an extremely scared animal that may have been beaten into submission.

@@paulhomsy2751 I don't think that is afair statement. They got Blue with a guarantee from a breeder. Neither the farmer nor the breeder was questioning abuse. I think the farmer is smart enough to know that and would have addressed it. You have to know this breed to truly understand how they are. They are not like other dogs. At all. If Blue had been beaten he would show signs of extreme anxiety and possibly aggression. I saw none of that in Blue. He looks exactly like he is depressed or sad, not afraid or anxious, which makes sense because he is 6 years old and was undoubtedly very much attached to his previous owners and their family and livestock. At 6 years old this dog is already middle aged as the breed lives only for 10-11 years. These particular dogs take the well-being of their flock (including their owners and all other animals and property) very serious. To not be able to do his job and love his past friends and family, at middle age, would be a crushing blow to Blue. It will take time for Blue to let go of his past and embrace his new family. Blue knows he's loved with his new family. He just needs time. Remember these dogs are very independent. That word means alot to an akbash. You'll have to look it up. But please don't lay out words of abuse on the internet when all you have is speculation. That is not fair to anyone, especially the breeders. Think if someone did that to you! Besides, it's almost impossible to beat these dogs into submission! They have the mindset of being a working partner with their people, not submissively doing was they're told. A good livestock breeding dog needs almost no training to do his job. He was not beaten to submission that is for sure.

No he could very well have killed a fox, wouldn't be surprising but what is telling in his treatment of the dog is the fact that he did't even bathe him and his rather depressed behaviour. I grew up on a large cattle ranch and our dogs were expected to do a job like everyone else, but we didn't sell them out and they were happy and active.

You have to realize that blue is a senior dog. He's not going to run around like a young dog. Blue has the experience to lay around and get the job done. With your small flock he's just what you need. I would think about getting a puppy next year and let blue show him the ropes. you have a great dog. Dogs do get depressed, my cat died and my dog became so depressed I thought he was going to die, he wouldn't eat just laid around lost interest in the sheep, then after a week or two he snapped out of it and got back to work. keep the dog.. The breeder knew what you needed. A laid back dog that will get the job done. I bet you haven''t lost one sheep or chicken since blue has been there, think about that because that's what its all about. With blue and the lama working together you have a great LSG team.

I've observed a Chesapeake Bay Retriever (male) that had a similar disposition when he got older. I like these Akbash dogs I might get one.

Akbash lives about 10 to 12 years, since blue is 6 years old that would be in the 40 to 50 for a human. I'm 50 and I sure don't run around like I use to, i'm sure blue feels the same way, just keep an eye on him. poor guy misses his family.

Brian Curwick : Justin I'm assuming is a first time sheep owner. Would you rather Justin buy a young dog no experience, running back and forth along the fence line, barking day and night, chasing chickens, rough playing with the sheep and lama, escaping from the property roam the neighborhood, getting hit by a car etc, etc. Justin must have smoothed talked the owner of the dog because not too many farmers are willing to let go of an experienced dog like that. The Willow arrival video was the first video I watched. I thought Blue was 12 years old. An old man. He looked depressed and sad. Now, after watching this video, it all makes sense. He misses his home. It's too bad you can't buy the dog that was his best friend at his last home and bring him to you home. A taste of ho e is what Blue needs. He misses something from there. I have confidence in whatever you decide. It's hard to know what to do. But I personally wouldn't send him back to the man you got him from who didn't give him the care you have. I am going to pray for you and Blue, that you'll be led to know what to do. I don't know if he's long for this world with his failure to thrive plus his depression. My heart aches for him. I got several LGDs as adults, when I first realized I needed LGDs. Their former owners said things like "I sold my livestock and Igor needs a new job". Sounded great to me.. An experienced dog for an inexperienced LGD owner. Every single one of them had issues. Some of it was socialization problems-- the 'book of LGD" when I started encouraged owners to adopt a completely hands off approach, saying if a dog got affection from humans it would not tend to its charges. One female was completely into roaming my whole neighborhood and would not even look at my goats (I had 250 does + all the other goats that go with a herd like that). One I got as a back up to one I already had did nothing but fight the first one. One snapped at kids when they tried to play with it. I don't know if he killed babies, bc I wasn't always on the scene-- I never saw it happen, but I jumped on him when he snapped, so don't know how it progressed when I wasn't there. And so forth. Then I started getting pups and raising them in MY system. Every single one of them has been exceptional. I hate to see older dogs cast off, but I have to look at these dogs somewhat as employees, and if they don't work, I don't need them. Of course, as those Sarah-raised pups turned into senior citizens they absolutely are still family members and stay here being babied until they die... I'm just saying I don't need to rehome someone else's problem child.

Frankly, the breeder should give you most of your money back. in other words, Blue was obviously ready for retirement, they should either give you 100% back and be happy he has a happy home to retire at, or give you the vast majority of you're money back (equivalent to selling you an old dog as a pet instead of a working dog). On one hand, Blue may be happier if he had a friend from his original pack to hang out with, but I would not trust that breeder because he obviously sold you a dog who was ready for retirement. He should only sell well trained dogs at their prime (2-3 years old if he does the training) if they are to be working dogs. If he wants to rehome any that are retirement age, frankly he should give them away to well screened homes. On another note, I do believe Blue showed a bit of contentment. He grinned a couple times during the video and asked you for a belly rub at one point. I think he found a perfect retirement home. It's just unfortunate that the seller was so dishonest (I don't believe the story that Blue was bloody when you picked him up because of catching a fox, either, with the condition he's in). If the seller has a guarantee, he should give you your money back and be happy Blue has a good home.

This video breaks my heart. Livestock Dogs (especially Akbash) are bonded to their flock much like we're bonded with our own family dogs (possibly more so). A dog that's older or had been with their charges long term is a risk for severe depression. Anyone reading may want to consider adopting or buying at least three animals they were bonded to the closest.

I wish there were many more compassionate and gentle hearted, loving people like you in this world! Blue is blessed to have been sent to your loving family! The breeder was dishonest in having sent you a dog who is obviously incapable of being a LGD. Not saying that the dog has no value as he most obviously does, and you recognize and honor him in this way. You bring the biggest smile to God's heart with how well you love all His creations! The breeder should be ever so thankful to you for taking Blue and the multitude of expenses and all the care involved with keeping him, and, send you a healthy, younger LGD to fulfill his original contract. It is not good for business to do something like this. This is what happens with dog breeders so often. They intentionally sell a very sick dog, in hopes that the receiving family will fall in love with it and be unable to return it, even for an exchange of a healthy dog. Makes one wonder how many times this has happened with Blue. Poor Guy! Give him a big hug for me! I pray that you are able to find a diet and natural treatment to help improve the quality of Blue's life, and that you are gifted an amazing LGD by a viewer who is able to donate one to you's! I don't understand why the vet didn't pull the painful tooth since she says it can't be repaired and will remain painful. That is a misery in and of itself.

Hi-I have had an akbash for 8 years who I got as a 4.5 month old. She had been isolated in a barn with her littermates and livestock, and not handled at all. She was really aloof, and really didn't bond with me until I started taking her hiking off leash, at about age 3. Although I had a few sheep, poultry, and horses I got her primarily as a pet. She is inside at her discretion, and often prefers to be on the "night shift" outside, coming in when it warms up outside. She really loves off leash hiking, and if your dog is depressed a similar activity that you do with her may do wonders for her mental health. My Abbey is more catlike than most dogs that I have known, and pretty independent, but one of the charming idiosyncrasies she has is when I return home, she jumps up on my bed and brings me my pillow! Fortunately I am retired, so I am not gone that much. Best of luck with your dog. PS I am in northern CA and her cost was only 400.00

The breeder can't be trusted. Get the tooth extracted AND get a refund for all of Blue's medical expenses. I'm sure 95% of his issues are a result of the bad tooth. On a side note, he is an older dog and at best will only be around for a few more years, get an inexpensive replacement and let blue train it.

Thank you for the update on Blue. Please consider this; Blue came from a breeder. As such, he had his pack family of other dogs there with him. On your homestead, he's the only dog around. So it may well be that he is missing out on other dogs' companionship. You don't need another LGD but it might not hurt to get a family pet dog that he can hang out with whenever he's "off duty." Check your local pet rescues for Basset Hounds or Bulldogs. Both breeds are pretty laid-back and calm.

I agree. A companion is probably just what he needs. Although I would discourage a Basset or a Bulldog... they have a high prey drive and that would not work well on a farm. Speak with a rescue, explain your situation and ask them to set you up with a dog. They will know who would do best. Or research breeds that have low prey drive and do well in a social setting like a farm. Off hand Golden Retrievers come to mind.

Nope....they aren't "different" or special in any way that they can't coexist with a regular farm dog. I use Labs and Lab mixes with LGD for companions all the time and they do wonderfully. A "golden" is just like any other dog, built to live outdoors and with its own kind. If you raise them outdoors, they want to live outdoors.

Get Blue a puppy to train. It would help him and you. The mixed dogs are not as expensive ( at least in my experience). We just got a GP/Maremma not AKC, for 250. I sure hope you keep Blue, he looks like he is coming around.

we have a GP/Anatolian mix for $100. She's an amazing guardian & companion. We recently got an Anatolian/Akbash pup $75, the student & teacher are great together. 🤔 From a business point of view, I don't know if I'd pay for a "name-brand" breed when the "generic" guardian breeds mix carry the same instinct to protect their herds. 👍😉

Oops. hit send too soon. Working dogs LOVE to have a job. He's obviously impaired and now you know he's been in pain. Please don't return him to the breeder. Any breeder who would pass Blue off as healthy and able is unreliable, if not dishonest. My thought is this has been an expensive and emotional lesson. Blue is not himself, but once you address having that painful tooth removed (ASAP!)and his hip pain is under control, he may perk right up. And he'll thank you, you'll see! Just make Blue a family dog. We had a guardian that was in a similar situation and made him our family dog. He went on to live another 9 years as a super happy, loving 150 pound lap dog. Best decision of our lives. He wasn't always the healthiest dog, but he was still the best dog we ever had. He passed from osteosarcoma this past May and to this day I still cry like a baby when I think about him. Yet, we wouldn't have had it any other way. God had other plans for Aiden and us as well I guess!

I am so sorry that you find yourself in such a tough position. I just wanted to add that we 'adopted' a working dog and it took a good six months before he settled in. He came to us a very stressed dog with lots of obsessive behaviours. Having a canine buddy definitely helped him. Blue looks a lot more relaxed and happy in this video.

I wont bash the breeder because depression is hard to predict in animals. I also own 2 LGDs and one is AKbash/GP mix. I would stick with Blue for sure. Just watching him makes me think that the depression will pass. Your family obviously loves him, and he will figure it all out. Getting another dog would solve your depression issue I bet. Will the breeder give you a significant discount? As I recall he was selling Blue to get new sire in his bloodlines. Most breeders of working LGDs are reasonable. Personally if it was me I would offer you a young pup for half the price. Blue will train that young dog up in no time.

One other thing..him just being with the flock is probably 90% of his job. Unless you have wolves he will scare most predators off just by being near the flock and marking his territory.

My akbash at 4 months old took on a coyote. The coyote was never seen again. Hes very protective of his territory and his chickens and ME. He cant stand it if he cant see me. I have 10 acres he never leaves. I paid 75.00 for mine from a amish family. Best dog and great companion. Aggressive but not a killer attitude unless your a coyote i love my BUDDY.

Don't under estimate your dog. If something does happen that would force him to have to fight a coyote I think think instinct would take over and he would do his job. I had the calmest 205 Lbs English Mastiff that was a show dog that loved everything. Then on a late night walk near our home on a school football field surrounded by woods at 10 PM. The owner of a large white male Dogo Argentino and female did not see us all ready out there on the other end of the field and let his dogs go. The Dog's came trough the wooded area and saw me and raced across that field right at me. I was thinking to my self that this is really gonna hurt. I forgot I had my dog with me and screamed my dogs name and he raised his head up to see what was going on because he was in some shrubs doing what dogs do. Once he saw the other dogs and realized what was happening without hesitating he rushed to me and positioned himself between me and the on coming dog and meet the male head on and proceeded to destroy that dog on the spot. Strangely the female did not participant only to stand up and put her paws on my dogs back as he was pinning the male dog down on the ground giving him the business but she never bit my dog. The dogs owner got there and thought all the blood was coming from my dog. I pulled my dog away and he secured his dog. At this point I was kinda proud of my boy and thought is this how that kid in "Old Yeller " felt when Yeller protected them from a bear..The dog owner apologized for not paying more attention. I told him he needs to be more thoughtful because there are people that walk there small dogs out here and his dog might hurt another dog. I got my dog home to clean him up and found that he did not have one puncture wound but pressure wounds on his skin around his jowls so the bottom line was my dog was fine because the Mastiffs have that lose skin all around their necks for protection. With that being said...Do not give up on Blue. Also did you have him checked for lyme Disease...I really wish your family well.

One thing we are missing is how he may be at night. Most LGD breeds tend to be more active at night. One of their most important traits. I had some of the same problems that you had. I bought a dog that was 6 or 7 years old and he ran away. he went back to where he was raised which was about 20 miles from my place. I was told to get a puppy, I got 2 dogs, a male, and a female. No more problems.

LGDs will be happiest and most effective working as a team. I've just gone through this myself. Yes, they're expensive but you have to do what's best for the animal's well being. I found my second one for free from someone who needed to rehome. A happy dog will be a much more effective guardian and is less likely to "play" with your livestock because they have a playmate.

If you want to keep Blue then maybe the breeder will offer a partial refund. Or deep discount on a puppy. That breed is good security because they are extremely devoted to their "family". All of Blue's life has been with others and he's just waiting to go back. No responsible breeder would have transferred this dog after the age of 6 months. If Blue is actually 8 years old (isn't that what the breeder said?) - then he is in his last couple of years and most of us slow down for those. :-/ It seems he can only be a pet from here out. On the positive side. Blue's calmness could be a good example for a new puppy. And it may help Blue cheer up to have another dog.

Our dog is a six-year-old Saint and distemper survivor with allergies and GI problems galore. So I started giving him half his calories in home cooked food specifically tailored to him, and I have noticed a complete change in his behavior. He seems a lot happier and acts like a two-year-old! His behavior change convinced my mother to try the same with her senior (12 and 13) dogs and had similar results. You might speak with your vet about slowly changing his diet. The formula that works best for us is 5% organ meat (liver should be used sparingly), 50% muscle meat, 20% Grain/Beans (soaked overnight before cooking), and 25% veggies of their calorie needs. A dog needs about 305-315 calories a day for every 10 pounds of weight depending on how active they are. You can also add supplements like ground egg shells for calcium and fish oil.

Get that tooth removed! Tooth pain is so immobilizing. Heck, that's how I act when I have a tooth abscessing. Dogs are also omnivores, plants, and meat. feed him some soft yams and kale. My sisters' dogs will always take that over meat. But, yeah, get the poor guy out of pain. And don't take him back to that breeder. I really don't trust them from what you've said. If you have to get another dog, set up a go fund me just for that. There are so many dog lovers out there ready to help.

Oh my such a decision. Poor Blue, I fostered dogs and feel your pain. I ended up with several working dogs like blue physically and mentally they ended up spending the rest of their days with me and had a comfortable life until it was time to go. I too bonded with them and was in no way going to let them go. I hope you can do the same for Blue, but you are right it is a business decision also. I would keep Penny and blue and let him live his remaining days with someone who loves him and can be as comfortable as possible. But if you have to choose another option I and so would many others understand it comes down to his quality of life. Thank you for sharing this with us, I know it is a hard thing to do. Pat

blue might just need a little longer to adjust, he's a dog used to habit, and if he doesn't improve by the month, you all can keep penny out there and blue can be the house guard dog until you decide on another dog or a pound nearby has a young lgd (way less expensive than buying through a breeder and no lines but a clean bill of health) or a young mutt that might be a good companion for blue to ease his depression. it is distinctly possible he was depressed with the breeder but was kept busy or they thought it was his personality. you guys of course will decide on the best thing for y'all so i hope it all goes well. - jacob

I wouldn't be too worried about Blue not being up to the task of predator control.....now that you have the scouring and pain under taken care of a little predator control might be just what he needs to snap him out of his depression! That guardian instinct is incredibly strong in these guys and would likely kick in if something threatened his flock. Good choice on keeping the old boy around, stick with it he'll break out of that funk I'm sure....

You are doing the right thing keeping Blue. Get tooth pulled and he will feel much better. That could be behind his eating issues. I feed a kibble and supplement w boiled chicken, beef liver, eggs in a barley or rice based porridge. Also fish oil capsules. Red flag that breeder he did you no favors. Please consider an LGD rescue organization. They often have pups as well as other ages. Also lots of information. Even if Blue isn't 100% I assure you his mere presence is a strong deterrent. I have about 70 hair sheep a couple of dozen chickens and have 15 years of experience. Good luck. Stick with him.

I have raised and used Akbash for years to run with my goats. You were correct on taking Blue to vet to see what problems he might have health wise. Write the Akbash accession and ask for book on the Dogs, it will tell you they do not feed meat to guard dogs in Turkish. Blue would be better with a companion. You can buy good young guard dogs that are not expensive. I bought 2 guard dags last year in Kansas and I am in Texas. I bought one Akbash and one Anatolian Shepherd 12 weeks old for $250.00 each, they were raised together and have worked out to be good.

Glucosamine works for dogs as well. Or you can make gelatine from a meat sauce. Also bone soup without the veggies will also help him. Also, I've mixed raw turkey burger and organic plain yogurt (with probiotics) to help with farting/digestive issues. As for the teeth issue, get a toothbrush, some doggy toothpaste and some anbesol on a Qtip to numb the tooth after brushing. Dogs wear their teeth down naturally and really there is nothing you can do but make it easier for them to cope with their dental issues. As for psychological issues, all you can do is socialize with him as much as possible. He is mourning the loss of his family and that is sad for anyone.Perhaps if you got him a female puppy to look after he'll perk up. That helped my old dog to live a couple of years more.

Dan, I would likely make the same decision to keep Blue for his sake. I do think the breeder should rectify this situation in some manner. I was cautiously optimistic to see Blue herding the sheep in the background of your video. I bet he wants to get back to his normal activities too. Our dog, when older and arthritic was given Remmeron for pain, but we were warned of the long term effect of liver damage. It worked well and she did not have any side affects. Good that Blue Is on the mend, but I too would advise to have the tooth extracted, and it might result in a more energetic dog and less chance of a possible infection spreading elsewhere in his body. Glad that you are giving him the TLC that he needs.

scours can be chalked up to a new diet. It sounds like the vet is giving him basically a clean bill of health with the large exception of depression. The depression will pass in time. It really boils down to what yall want. I think long term you have a calm prooven effective LGD that you may get another 4-5 good years out of. You also have a LG llama who is awesome and you dont need any extra feed for. Its a tough call for sure, but its seems more an abundance of blessings to me :)

While it is sad that Blue had to say good bye to his dogs and his land, and that is horrible, he is now doing what he is supposed to do. I have had Live Stock Guardian Dogs for almost 20 years now. They do get settled into, and attached to their "territory" so I am sure he is homesick . But you are doing a really good job with him. He will be fine. In the videos he is always right there with the sheep. I have never seen a guard dog that enjoys the heat of the day, or runs around in the heat of the day. At night they move around way more than in the day. They lean towards being nocturnal, yet smells , noises of predators springs them into action even in the day. You / Blue have the worse part behind you, and why let him go back to where he was not getting proper care..

It's hard not to be depressed when your in pain.I can tell during the video when you stopped petting him,he wanted you to keep it up!I hope you keep him as long as he can be made comfortable.I would think Blue could teach a younger dog the ropes,as long as he's not in to much pain to handle a puppy.I recently adopted a pyr mix pup.I got him to learn to be around my chickens and as protection as i came out of an abusive relationship.Also wanted a dog i can trust with my handicapped sister and 5yr old grandaughter.So far he is making them his flock so to speak.BUT now i u derstand why many people get two dogs,so much energy and the need to have what they are protecting with them.My pup is only 4 1/2 mos old and he is very sad for awhile when my grandaughter goes home.Ha!ha!I just realized this switched over to tbe next video!

Check out Patara at Appalachian Homestead. She took her 2 year old GP to the vet and left him overnight. Brought him back home the next day and she said he was all jacked out of shape about it. It was taking him a very long time to get over the stress of leaving his environment. My cousin obtained an adult LGD and it worked out well. But that dog came with the herd of goats he bought. So that was probably the difference. The dogs 'family' came with him. They just bond so tightly to their flock/herd and to the territory that they are raised in. That is what makes them such good guardians of the farm. They want to always be on their territory and with their flock/herd or human family. His diarrhea may have been caused from the new diet. Which may have been why he was reluctant to eat. Especially with a painful tooth. Makes me wonder if he has more bad teeth. Looks like you are doing so good with him. Maybe give him a little more time?

There is more you could be doing for Blue. Glucosamine Chondriton should be added to his daily supplements. You can also add more natural holistic herbs to his diet to calm down the arthritis. While six is old for a large breed dog, it is just the start of their senior years. My Giant Schnauzer lived to be 16 years old with proper supportive care. I would not return Blue. It is clear that his "breeder" didn't take proper care of him. I would keep him, and provide more supportive care. You will see a big difference in few weeks even just adding the glucosamine chondriton to his diet. As for his depression, that will eventually go away. Part of it right now is that he is still not feeling good. It is hard to be happy when you are in pain and miserable feeling. Give him time, he will eventually come around.

I have an Akbash too. He is a very picky eater. Smells food, even good meat, raw or cooked, just casually smells then reluctantly eats. Seems he's just not food motivated. Unlike his 'brother" our Anatolian Shepherd - that guy eats anything. However, our Akbash came from the breeder with pin worms. So we have to keep him on meds for that constantly. Our guy got bored for a while and started licking his legs, but I think we finally broke him of that with a big blow up collar so he could not reach his legs. I think Akbash are just moody dogs. We've had Great Pyrenees and a Maremma. Akbash is a serious and I think moody dog.

I feel SO bad for Blue. He's clearly unhappy. Why would a good breeder sell him near the end of his useful life, that's horribly ungrateful! Eventually, it seems you will need a younger guardian dog, I bet Blue would be great at training a new one. Of course, this is just my small two cents (zero actual knowledge or experience 😀) I definitely would not get a second dog from the breeder unless it was free AND they allowed you to keep Blue. l know you love and respect the animals in your care, but it definitely seems like the breeder does not. A couple of different thoughts about this: 1. I'm trying to figure out how "the problem is the solution" can work here...(unsuccessful so far). 2. I hope the breeder is reimbursing you for the vet fees as he should be held responsible for Blue's preexisting conditions. 3. When you mentioned the tooth problem, a light went on for me and explained so much. The look in Blue's eyes, his lethargy, and his behavior in general seems like he's in a lot of pain. That tooth has got to go! 4. I would not swap Blue for another dog from that breeder. IMHO he should have his license taken away. 5. Thankfully, you have Penny as a backup which gives you some options so you don't have to completely rely on Blue. Blue training a puppy could be a great option, but is he even up to it? Also, the added expense is a big deterrent. 6. Something that doesn't make sense to me is the fact that Blue supposedly got in a fight with a fox the night before you got him. So he was fine the night before and able to fight off a fox (no toothache, no lethargy, no arthritis, no health issues)? I don't buy it. 7. I am praying for you and your family and Blue, and hope that you will make the right decision for everyone.

well it is sure nice that you took him to the vet. I think you should try another vet when you get the tooth pulled. we have two dogs, a pyrenees and a maremma. not registered and inexpensive-$200 each as puppies. they are great together and keep each other company. sleep with the sheep but patrol together. I think livestock dogs need a buddy which is why we got the second dog. I has worked out great

Only suggestion I would have is work to bond him to you. You have bonded with him, but establishing yourself as his Alpha might help his depression and acclimate him to his new home. Maybe take him on walks around the property with you every day, helping him to feel like he is working for you. Just my two cents. I know you are responsible animal lovers and caregivers!

My son is on his second Akbash and he calls Charlie his "son". It was the same with Cain, the first Akbash. Unfortunately for the dogs, my son has no livestock. He just fell in love with the breed and it's looks. They have both been wonderful dogs. Charlie is a replacement for Cain who met with an untimely demise pitting himself against a semi. He lost. Cain was getting a little old. He was developing arthritis and depending on the weather he sometimes had some trouble getting around. But much like any animal, including humans, if something roused his protective instincts, all physical pain seems forgotten for the moment and business is taken care of. It's adrenalin. It can simply make pain disappear briefly. Your Blue doesn't look like a spring chicken, how old is he? I'm guessing 5ish. That was Cain's age when he ran out the door to tackle that semi. He was actually very smart, he had taught himself to open some types of doors and opened two locked doors to get outside on his own that day. And he was simply running and having a splendid time and didn't see the truck apparently. I hope your Blue works out for you. I would suggest partners in livestock enforcement. A donkey and or a llama. Between the members of the "team", NOTHING should get through undetected and remain in one piece as God originally designed it. Best of luck.
