If you are learning more then you need to know that you should not believe anything. There is no movie in which everything they say is true.You only have to believe in prayer in the temple.

@@sakkmatt Indeed, no field of human activity is true for everyone, except for science & technics. If you are looking for certitude, go with one of those two. Bye the way, this video is about linguistics & history, which are both more sciences than arts - so more true (than differently accepted, for everyone)

He has a great advice, though. When I was student many years ago, during boring lectures, I used to draw various shapes, mazes, characters, fancy curves, arrows, etc. Had I knew hieroglyphs, I would have practiced and made some ornaments in my notebooks ;) It is an interesting language and the vulture is a great start for the alphabet ;)

Ancient Hieroglyphics is a language comprised of symbols to help bring together the different languages of what the people spoke at that time. It was used to eliminate the chaos of confusion and the different understandings and comprehensions. I would say it acted like bridges to help bring everyone together.🖤❤💛🤍💙

He said symbols are sometimes stacked "to make it look good". I would think it was more about conserving precious writing space. This was literally written in stone after all.
@thesmilingmercenary937
@thesmilingmercenary937 4 жыл бұрын
That may be true, but he also emphasized how important aesthetics were to them. The style of the thing mattered a lot, and it wasn't as interesting to look at just stringing them out. I think they really do look better stacked, you know?

Although it may look like "well if it`s a long dead language no one really knows what it was and why and how it was used, so my guess is as good as anyone`s", the reality is a bit different. Scientific work is not just some guessing - be it chemistry, anthropology or linguistics. People study hard first, and then work even harder, checking and rechecking their theories, there`s scientific method behind everything that is done, so normally when you hear someone with a degree uttering just one word - it has a huge amount of work to back it up. While I do not know Dr Brier from Adam, I still feel that it is very unlikely that he, being a scholar, would just say something without being sure.

Yesterday I stumbled on the reason we call the oval line around a Pharaoh's name a cartouche (the line represented a rope to the ancient Egyptians). It was coined by the French antiquarians accompanying Napoleon during his ill fated invasion of Egypt. The shape reminded one Frenchman of the silk powder cartridges used in a ship's guns. Hence the French word for cartridge, cartouche. :-)

Ok so it says: "Shine sun sky or rise sun sky", here's my perception of it, the opener could be "they" instead of "the", also the "shine" could be a verb making it "They rise sun in sky" or "They shine sun in sky". Is this an actual hieroglyph by the way?

So Egyptian hieroglyphics are written by sound and not just by picture. Egyptians didn't use letter vowels but drawings that represented vowels and alphabet. A is a vulture drawing, B is a foot, C is a circle with lines, wow, amazing. I will come back to this.Memorizing and drawing to interpret the drawings would be the 🔑.Because each picture represents an alphabet to form words.My memory is good and I love to draw, this is definitely a challenge. I hope I am interpreting this right. I learned a few ancient alphabet today.Thank U for sharing!

This is what I read about the heiroglyphs.. it’s long but interesting... 4 1 We must now speak about the Ethiopian writing which is called hieroglyphic among the Egyptians, p97 in order that we may omit nothing in our discussion of their antiquities. Now it is found that the forms of their letters take the shape of animals of every kind, and of the members of the human body, and of implements and especially carpenters' tools; for their writing does not express the intended concept by means of syllables joined one to another, but by means of the significance of the objects which have been copied and by its figurative meaning which has been impressed upon the memory by practice. 2 For instance, they draw the picture of a hawk, a crocodile, a snake, and of the members of the human body - an eye, a hand, a face, and the like. Now the hawk signifies to them everything which happens swiftly, since this animal is practically the swiftest of winged creatures. And the concept portrayed is then transferred, by the appropriate metaphorical transfer, to all swift things and to everything to which swiftness is appropriate, very much as if they had been named. 3 And the crocodile is a symbol of all that is evil, and the eye is the warder of justice and the guardian of the entire body. And as for the members of the body, the right hand with fingers extended signifies a procuring of livelihood, and the left with the fingers closed, a keeping and guarding of property. 4 The same way of reasoning applies also to the remaining characters, which represent parts of the body and implements and all other things; for by paying close attention to the significance which is inherent in each object and by training their minds through drill and exercise of the memory over a long period, they read from habit everything which has been written.

what do you do in situations where you have a small hieroglyph forced to stand alone?? i.e. sandwiched between larger hieroglyphs such that it cannot be stacked

Coming in completely cold, the images told me ideographically about the sun was shining in the sky. I saw the circle with a dot (the sun) with the squiggly line (shining) and the big ellipse (sky). Scary.

So, where did the information of what sounds the hieroglyphs represent come from when the civilization and language were dead for over a thousand years?

Jo, As is addressed in the course, it all starts with the Rosetta Stone. When the Rosetta Stone was discovered, everyone thought the code would be cracked quickly, but it wasn’t. It took more than 20 years before someone would finally be able to read the ancient Egyptian inscription. Everyone had been making the Big Mistake, assuming that the language was primarily ideographic. Even as Thomas Young and the French historian Jean-François Champollion were figuring out the alphabet, they both made that mistake. Today we will see how Champollion made the big breakthrough and became the first man in 2,000 years to read hieroglyphs. He realized the language was very similar to Coptic and built phonetically from there. What we’re pronouncing is based on the Coptic language, so it's not exactly what ancient Egyptian would have sounded like, but we can hypothesize it is close.

@@TheGreatCourses I am aware of the sounds of the Coptic language being utilized that's sort of the direction I was going in. Said this (about Coptic) in a comment a few weeks ago with ppl debating over the hieroglyphs and got pounced on in the comments by naysayers. Those who know know.

2 main factors: 1. Egyptian names written in other languages that had vowels like the peace treaty between Rameses II. and the Hittites. The Hittites wrote in Cuneiform which includes vowels. Part of the diplomatic letters and contracts were found in Hittite sites. (Like the Great courses plus said earlier, it works the other way as well. On the Rosetta stone a Greek name, Ptolemaios, was spelled in Egyptian) 2. The latest and still surviving descendend of the ancient Egyptian language is spoken by the Egytian Christian Minority, The Copts. The Copts use the greek alphabet, which also includes vowels. Jean Francois Champollion studied the Coptic language because he had a hunch that it would help him decipher the Rosetta Stone. He was right about that. CHampollion worked under the assumption that the the circled hieroglyphs on the stone must be something special, and figured them to be the Pharaoh's name. So he tried mapping the greek letters in the Pharaoh's name to hieroglyphs which were encircled. Based on that he tried to identify more words that included the same letters. I believe one of the words, he was able to identify using the Coptic language was the word for sun. Rah in Coptic, if I recall correctly. Of course it is more complicated than that, but that's it in a nutshell as far as I remember my University days. :)

Walter Picca: Bob Brier Ph.D is wrong. Hieroglyphs do not represents letters in the English alphabet. They do not represent phonetic words or sounds. The 11 hieroglyphs he is referring to do not mean: "The sun is shining [or rising] in the sky."
