Interesting how in WWI things were completely open until the last year of the war. Anything could have happened, a German victory was definitely still possible in 1918. WWII was decided by 42/43 and things only went one way from then. So in terms of dramatic value, WWI definitely wins!
@ignacejespers82016 жыл бұрын
WW2 was actually decided in 1940 at Dunkerque or 1941/42 if you include Barbarossa and the defence of Moscow
@bluemountain41816 жыл бұрын
It definitely wasn't decided at Dunkirk in 1940. In 1940 neither the Soviet Union or the US had entered the war and their entry was by no means inevitable so it could have played out very differently.
@ignacejespers82016 жыл бұрын
Hitler missed the chance at Dunkirk to force a peace treaty with the UK. As it happened they would save their army in order to form the backbone of a new one. Without it the UK could hold it's territory, but couldn't be able to strike back as there was no-one else to train the recruits and were alone in the war. Plus Stalin saw the Ribbentropp-Molotovpact as a temporary truce between the USSR and the Reich. He was planning to finish the modernization of the Red Army and would probably strike afterwards. Germany couldn't possibly win the war. All Axis forces were lacking some important ressource (Oil, rubber or steel) and were dependant on import from the US or the USSR in order to sustain themselves (Malaya and the Dutch Indies for the case of rubber).
@bluemountain41816 жыл бұрын
Forcing the British army to surrender at Dunkirk would not have had a significant impact on whether Britain accepted a treaty or not since after the fall of France the army played little part in the defence of the UK. The only major task that really needed to be accomplished by the army was the defence of the Suez Canal, and that could have been achieved even with a surrender at Dunkirk. Soviet victory over Germany in the east was never a forgone conclusion, or even probable; they came close to collapse and defeat. The major events which determined the course of the war happened from the raid on Pearl Harbour to the surrender of the 6th army at Stalingrad.

@TheIfifi6 жыл бұрын
I was obviously introduced to it in school, though my passion awoke when I read: "Storm of Steel" by Ernst Jünger, a german stormtrooper who fought from 15-18, he was wounded during the initial opening of the Kaiserschlact and this might very well have saved his life. While he was a nationalist and pro-aristocracy I can't say I agree with a lot of his writings, but it was well written and thoroughly enjoyable. I recommend it to everyone and If I knew enough about him I would certainly send in help so that they could do a special episode on him.

Russia out of the War, Italy is barely in the war, America still has not mobilized, France is still recovering after the Neville offensive, and the turmoil in the British high command at all time high and is going to have repercussions. So what if the Ottomans are crumbling, Bulgaria will only fight for its state's interest and Austria Hungary... less said the better :) The Central Powers will win, and this war will be over long before Novemeber 11th!! Nah. By now, the Italian army has wallslammed any Austrian offensive pretty hard (and this won't change, as June will show), it's reforming under Diaz, and in general is waxing, rather than waning. Of course, if Germany wins on the Western Front it's all going to be moot, but vis-a-vis with the Austro-Hungarians, the window of possible collapse has come and gone.

How was Austro-Hungarian situation by now? How did they even manage to continue the war without supplies nor the efficiency of the germans?
@tommasorucci40886 жыл бұрын
Because Austria was not the failed state that people generally think it was (surely this channel doesn't help with that perspective), it surely had gigantic problems, but could still keep its army equipped and well-fed, even if this meant food shortages in the empire. Although they are not talking about it, the Italian front was still active and raging, though not of course to the extent of the western front
@moonknightish6 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that a lot of people, mostly americans, constantly downplay the Austro-Hungaric empire, expecially to further their "theory" of:
@MajinOthinus6 жыл бұрын
Ikr? Austria was definetly no match for France, Britain or Germany, but it was definetly not a minor power by any stretch of the imagination, much less a failed state. They did suffer from poor officers and planning throughout the war, which makes it seem like they were worse than they actually were. This can for example be seen with the austrian divisions put under direct german command, which performed significantly better than other austrian divisions with the same men/equipment.
@KKKKKKK777js6 жыл бұрын
I would say Austria-Hungarys position was similiar to that of the russian empire. At the start a strong front covering significant problems. In 1917 the russian empire imploded twice.By 1918 it looked like Austria-Hungary had to stop the war or face a simular fate.
@moonknightish6 жыл бұрын
"Austria was definetly no match for France, Britain or Germany," That depends on a lot of factors, tho. I think that, on a scenario of mountain warfare, Austria would have prevailed against Britain, which didn't have units and officials trained for that.

I can't help feeling that this would have been the perfect time for Germany to negotiate peace with the entente. They have just finished with Russia have lots of new territory, can threaten the West with extra battle hardened troops and have the psychological advantage of a big offense coming if negotiations were to fail. I know that last week Indy said that negotiations didn't start because of German demands of Belgium territory for a seaport/access. But even so, making serious concessions seems like a good idea now. Were there other factors at play that stopped a peace deal being worked out now?

I don't know is this right place to ask question for earlier episodes, but, I will try: In episode about 11 stupid moves early in war you sad said that Princip shot man [Ferdinand] that could help Serbia to achive it's dreams. I think that constatation could give false picture to the viewers. Serbs wanted unification of Serbs and South Slavs from Austro-Hungary with kingdom of Serbia and no way that Ferdinand could agree to that. Ferdinand have idea about that concept of reforms that will introduce trialism and make Slavs have equal rights as Hungarians, but, that was only to prevent seccesionism and nationalism of Slavs. Giving Slavs more rights will lead to political confrontation between Slavs and Hungarians while Habsburgs will, in Divide et Imprera style, control them easily and prevent their independence strugle. example: Habsburgs used similar strategy in 1848. revolutions, giving Slavs more liberties to make Slavs fight Hungarians and after victory those liberties are abolished. So, what I ask is if could you explain to the viewiers that Ferdinand did not wanted to help Serbs [and other Slavs] with that trialist reforms, but, to contain their independence and unification strugle. Love the show, keep up the good work.

What some may see as a bribe to appease some nationalistic tendencies to contain nations within the empire, others might see it as a genuine care to what people are saying.
