1916 was a major turning point in war tactics and strategy. There were many changes already but 1916 was the key changer. If 1914 was a goodbye to the 19th centure tactics, 1915 was a slow growing pain period foe armies to mature to modern war. 1916 on the other hand was the year what happens when a modern nation goest to total war mode and begins to produce war material in unbelievable speed. 1916 truely showed how much carnage and destruction can be made when titans go with strong force.

Are there any plans on convering some of the other fronts / battles in detail, such as parts of the Serbian campaigns like the Battle of Cer, or the caucasus front between Russian and the Ottomans like the Battle of Sarıkamış? I imagine it is difficult to find photographs / videos from those battles, which is important for the Channel's narration style. But, it would be awesome to learn more about them:)

Traditionally, it is accepted that a defending force has a 3:1 advantage over an attacker. In other words, a defending force can hold off three times its own number of attackers. This means the British and French needed over 172 divisions to overcome the German 57.5 divisions on the Somme.
@ZacharieGartner12 күн бұрын
3:1 is a theoretical reference that is hardly likely. Most breakthrough advances in military history, including the great war, were made with far less of an advantage. Just look at siege warfare. In some sieges fewer numbers of attackers would simply bottle up and starve the enemy. In other sieges, such as Burgos in 1812, the anglo portuguese and spanish forces could not break through the French defenses despite a 17:1 advantage. Many factors come into play.
@neiloflongbeck570512 күн бұрын
@ZacharieGartner In the case of Burgos, IIRC, the British and their allies suffered from supply shortages and a lack of artillery.

Great video, and demonstrates the importance of the year 1916 in effecting the course of the later war. I'd like to see a follow-on detailing the effects of the defeat and occupation of Romania by the Central Powers. Not only on the immediate military situation vis-a-vis Russia, and the Allied occupation of Greece militarily, but the effects, if any on countering the British blockade of Germany, and the squabble between Germany & Austro-Hungary over the distribution of the resources they could gain by the occupation of Romania (which squabble, my limited understanding suggests was mainly a result of the blockade.)

1:28:30 ". . . native askari soldiers." Askari is Swahili for soldier, so what you said was 'native soldier soldiers.' Not to worry. People make a similar mistake every day with Sahara Desert. 'Cause sahara means desert.
@ZacharieGartner12 күн бұрын
Sahara means desert in arabic yes. The term has however become an internationally recognized name for that specific desert itself, regardless of what that term means in one specific language. It is therefore not a mistake to call it Sahara desert, so as to specify we are talking about the desert in North Africa and not another desert (sahara) of the world.

@ I’m just jumping into American history after spending 25yrs on Europe and the ME and the Zimmerman, Unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Lusitania doesn’t sit right with me. I’m spitballing here, but I do think this is the real reason the U.S. entered the war: The U.S. got rich off the aid they gave the European allies. The U.S. forced the allies to pay for all the wartime aid they had given them-with interest. The only way the allies were able to pay the Americans back was by winning the war. If the allies lost., the U.S. would not be able to collect. 1917 was a horror show for the allies-the worst element being the French mutiny. It really looked like the Germans were going to end up with the victory. So, the U.S. had to enter the war. If they did not a the allies lost-the Americans would be out a lot of treasure.

Not accurate sir. The greatest cause of WWI was the German Schlieffen Plan in combination with the Franco-Russian alliance. Germany had to attack France and Russia at the same time before it could give either side enough time to get armies onto the battlefield, it saw this as its only way to avoid a war on both of its borders and win. The dominos were: Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia began to mobilize as the historic protector of the Slavs, Germany implemented the Schlieffen plan and quickly attacked France through Belgium and Russia at the same time, and this caused Britain to declare war on Germany.
