Like many former soldiers, lance corporal Adolf Hitler was disillusioned with the new German Republic after the Armistice in 1918. Like man of his country men he was also in dire need of a job. The Bavarian Army provided an opportunity and soon young Adolf Hitler found himself in the ranks of an obscure political party in Munich: The German Workers' Party.

Now I realize why he became so popular. Every single German at the moment had either fought in the trenches or lost some relative in them, so it's not hard to guess how he managed to be taken seriously in such a visceral way. Because not only did he talk the talk; he had already established that he was a man that had walked the walk (or run the run in his case).

Right, like pointing out that the man himself was a political flip-flopper, going wherever it seemed he had the best chance of being carried along with the tide to success. Secondly the fact that the National Socialist party was actually Socialist but opposed to Marxist and Leninist Socialism. He doesn't directly say it but he mentions it a few times. Hitler was an Authoritarian Dictator, yes, but his Socialist party was Authoritarian, too, in the way that all socialism (big s or small) eventually becomes. Many don't (or refuse to) understand that just because Fascism and Communism appear at different ends of the Economic political spectrum, doesn't mean they actually were at opposite ends of Authoritarianism.

I like how you focused on the fact that he was uneducated and had no skills and thus no life prospects. For a lot of such people a war gives them purpose and advancement, and losing that also becomes difficult since in a normal society the skills they learn in wartime and gave them value in that context is gone. No wonder so many of them sought to recapture that.

I love how you explain the exceptionally complex and intricate nature of the DAP. Even my colleagues at the university have trouble with labels as either a “Deeply left” or “Deeply right” party. I think the reason they have so much trouble is because of their flawed attempts to label it in the first place. As you said, the competing political beliefs were controversial (and not unilateral) in 1919. Now we try to group it in our contemporary lens and we end up ourselves conflicted. I think the purpose of history is to attempt to uncover these many complexities and to accept when we don’t necessarily have just one answer.

Excellent. Thank you for this fantastic video. Am reading Fest's biography of Hitler now (the best in my view), and have read Rise and Fall, Evan's Coming and Power, and Volcker's Hitler. You and your team have put together a detailed, thorough, and compelling presentation, wonderfully presented by you, Jesse. Thank you for this great video, especially the time spent on identifying and including art/posters, photos, and incisively chosen and notated quotes from the various actors. Thank you!

When you pay attention to what you are saying and put it all together it takes more than once to listen and completely understand that it only took him a year to become an influential politician just after he was released from the hospital!!! 1919 to 1920 a century ago and we are still talking about him and how he changed the world!

BLUE DOG He asked England for peace many, many, many times, but the zioshill Churchill owed money to the central banking owners and they wanted the formation of Israel, and funded both sides of the war. Churchill refused every attempt by hitler to avoid war with England, because he was ordered to. A little research goes a long way.

A fair and factual discussion of the early rise of the mustache man, without the annoying spooky music and hysterical narration which typically accompanies these types of videos. I've watched a few of your other videos, and I haven't detected an obvious bias or desire to pander to certain audiences. You might have earned yourself a Patreon subscriber because detailed and honest historical work needs to be done, even though I think books are the best way to study history.

What he used to do before the Great War was live out of hostel dormitories in Vienna, which was his concept of initially going out into the world, upon leaving home in the Austro-Bavarian region, having rejected his dad's idea of being a border tariff collector, although he did have ideas of becoming something somewhere along the line, and canvas painting was the more immediate project in that regard. So he'd take his eisel and paints and canvasses into city squares, amongst pigeons and traffic, and all that, and do portraits of buildings. On other days he'd spend the entire day in libraries and museums poring intensely over literature and exhibits whilst wearing fedoras and long jackets and with longish hair.

Hi Mr Alexander, Thanks for the summary of the rise the third Reich. As a student of history, I appreciate your effort. Historiography on Hitler, especially about 1919, still is following his own self-depiction to an unbelievable degree, only in recent years has some of that been picked apart by archive research, most notably by Othmar Plöckinger. Hitler neither went to the DAP out of his own decision nor because the Army Intelligence wanted to have an eye on the party (they were already involved in it), no, the Army Intelligence most likely sent Hitler to the DAP, and more soldiers along with him, to boost the party's numbers. The dramatic exchange at the first meeting probably didn't happen. When Hitler developed his contribution to the party program late in 1919, he was his regiment's librarian and had ample time to study all the völkisch and antisemitic literature the army had stashed.
