I started watching as a sceptic. I almost knew what John Harris's take would be. But over many clips, this series has brought insights into what it feels like. There lies the beginning of empathy. Away from the opinion columns, the business pages, Westminster Watch. What is happening in the country - and I mean the UK - is so very tragic. Our narratives are pulling apart. As are our lives and ability to see the lives of others. Thank you John and the Guardian team on taking a chance with this fine social documentary. I am only sad for what it points to.

This business of petty inconvenience and indignity, of being kept waiting about, of having to do everything at other people’s convenience, is inherent in working-class life. A thousand influences constantly press a working man down into a passive role. He does not act, he is acted upon. He feels himself the slave of mysterious authority and has a firm conviction that ‘they’ will never allow him to do this, that, and the other. Once when I was hop-picking I asked the sweated pickers (they earn something under sixpence an hour) why they did not form a union. I was told immediately that ‘they’ would never allow it. Who were ‘they’? I asked. Nobody seemed to know, but evidently ‘they’ were omnipotent. George Orwell.

Just a small technical comment: I really don't like the de-saturated look. I realize that is the look of certain high-end panasonic cameras, but get some color in there will you? If you don't want to do color-correcting, perhaps try sony camera and lenses or some other body and lenses just to get a little more natural colors. This is already a hard topic, don't make it worse with this ghastly, de-saturated look. Again, I realize a lot of modern cinematographers like this look, not least because it's the default output of a lot of high end digital cameras these days, but I'd say make it look a little more natural. Nature isn't THAT de-saturated.

Working class Brits who vote Tory and care far more about 'immigrants' than their own working rights. I mean, if that's not dense, I don't know what is. "What don't we want?" "Sick pay!" "Paternity leave!" "When do we want it? "Never!" "What don't we want?" "Holiday pay!" "When do we want it? "Never!" "What don't we want?" "Pensions!" "When do we want it? "Never!" I think he did...except miners never worked that hard..."snap up and go on badly" as they used to say...those delivery people are on the go all the time.

In '96 and I spent over fifteen grand racing motorbikes on a despatch rider's wages. (28K) We earned loads more then, because there was a shortage of couriers. Courier companies were forced to pay us high wages. Mass immigration (supported by Labour) has driven down wages. I'll never vote Labour again because they no longer support working-class people.

@@gartner101 Unfortunately not by old labour (1900s-1960s) but by the intellectual/metropolitan freakshow that predominated in the 70s and 80s, first obsessed with South Africa, now Gaza. Old labour cared about the British. New labour cared about the rich. The current mob...well, they may not care about the rich, but they certainly don't care about the British. Call it Mrs Jellyby syndrome. All thats left of old labour is Frank Field and Dennis Skinner. One's been thrown overboard, the other is senile.

Labour is completely out of touch. They have become a intellectual elite, arguing theoretical pure ideology rather than do the basic work of helping the worker.

For examples of when their theories are put into practice, just look at the incompetence of inner London councils in the 1980s.
