Broken? Defective? FUBAR? The Ripped Speaker Fuzz Pedal from EHX claims to make your guitar speaker sound like it has been destroyed. Why do you want that? Well, it was pretty ok for the pioneers of rock n roll. Is the pedal any good? Find out for yourself with my TOP FIVE TONES!

This pedal was a lot cooler that I expected it to be. I think a neat mod would be to have the Rip controlled by an expression pedal.

The off bias settings are cool to mess with, but my favourite setting on this is actually even bias (about 11:00 0n my pedal), fuzz anywhere from 1:00 to full up, and EQ tilt at about 1:00. With the guitar up all the way you have a pretty standard thick Fuzz Face kind of sound, and when you roll the guitar volume down to between 6 and 7, it cleans right up like a germanium fuzz would, and gives you a gorgeous clean to mild overdrive tone, a lot like Hendrix got.

if you turn bias to 1030 and set fuz to about 330 and tone to 2 and add some goopy delay you have a heavenly tone for lead

Nothing wrong with any of those sounds, fuzz is just great. Jean-Jaques Burnell from the British band The Stranglers had a similar sound for his bass. This was because his multitude of 6 or 8" (can't remember) speakers where rattling to death and giving up the ghost, it's the best bass sound that you'll ever hear. I think the last time it was used for recording was the 'no more heroes' l.p. He has searched for it's sound ever since.

I’ve had mine for a couple of months. The only demo of it at the time I purchased it was the one EHX produced. I have to admit, I was very disappointed with it, initially. It just didn’t deliver the goods like I hoped it would. However, if this is stacked with a TS9, it’s sounds absolutely phenomenal! (Especially for lead tones using a neck pickup.) In short, I think it’s crap on its own, but is amazing if used in combination with a good OD. Thanks for the demo!

(edited comment) The JHS 3 Series Fuzz has a bias knob that does exactly was the rip knob does here, but it doesn't have a tone control. That's a definite advantage of this EHX one. I was under the impression that this unit was more expensive than the JHS but it's not. Just ordered one.

I can't help but mention that the DOD Carcosa fuzz is exactly like every other gated fuzz that came before it. DOD is not the first pedal to have a bias on a fuzz pedal. Is the Carcosa the only fuzz pedal you own? It's a cheap noisy pedal at that.
@ithemba
@ithemba 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrishepburn1503 ok its not the first then to have one - still I really like having one, as well as the voicing switch. And no, it was my eighth or so fuzz pedal, but its the only one that stuck to my board because its the one that I can use the most (running into various already driven amps and doing the sludge-y doom-y stuff). I find it neither noisy nor can I find anything cheap about how it works, feels or sounds, compared to either my fuzzface or handbuilt boutique-y stuff.

There are as many theories about origin of fuzz as there are tellers of the story. Each genre owns the player who inadvertently discovered it. Fair enuf. What difference does it make. Fuzz can contribute stunningly to a song. Unfortunately very few players have the finesse to recognize where and how much to apply. It is normal to hear fuzz & distortion turned up to "stupid" setting and some unrecognizable putridity attacks us from radio or stage. I mean to get me one of these, I'm researching. I've never had one. Of course I will be the guy with the finesse to use it tastefully, never putridly. I'm old you see. Wise.

Subtle; with the RS output set to push up into an, already on, overdrive when engaged. it also makes more sense to do it with a pedal; because, as soon as you make a hole in the speaker, the efficiency drops and the life of the speaker is shortened.

If this has a Tone Bender circuit, which it probably is as it has a glassy clean up, then may be a " rip" off of Blackout Effectors Fuzz Bear / Fubar. Or it could be a Fuzz Face circuit, as that too cleans up well.
