Mod the JS 400. It's the best platform. If you want my reason, I'll give the best one - it's configured in construction like Eddie's last versions - maple necks with basswood body capped with maple. My guess is that the maple neck and cap form the primary sound plane of the instrument and the basswood actually gives you something nice against your body without letting my fat gut dampen the sustain of the primary sound plane, sustain/tone block, whatevs I have actually been wanting to do a pure materials test comparison of instruments that are capped with maple and have different woods underneath, but it requires stuff like a spectrum analyzer with a high sample rate, deep memory, and wide/sensitive input bandwidth and complex stimulus gear/fixturing.
@russellzauner4 жыл бұрын
that test would also have to include pure isolated test as well as having something like a block of ballistic gel strapped to the back of it to emulate the damping effects of holding a guitar against your body...

@BOBANDVEG4 жыл бұрын
In the early 2000s the major guitar companies had an all out war to see who could bring the best starter guitar for x amount of money. It revolutionized the production. Todays starter squire is 3x better than anything jimi hendrix could hope for. Dont get me wrong, you can definitely get a lot better products, Buuuuut....I've seen people get on stage with a $200 jackson, the crowd was fired up and never knew the difference

@@BOBANDVEG I had a Squire Telecaster Custom from around 2005/2006 and that guitar held up against my old Standard Fender Tele. Even when they brought out the Classic Vibe series, Squire really stepped up their game (although the pickups were a too weak for my taste on the vibe tele and Strat). As for Epiphone, I had nothing but issues in the 00’s.

I've recently purchased a JS 300 and it is a great guitar, not even for the price! If you upgrade the pickups and perhaps the bridge a bit, you'll get a fantastic Strat-style guitar, imo. It is more comfortable to play and holds better in tune than much more expensive guitars. The neck is just so comfortable and smooth to play. I've got the Seafoam Green version and the colour looks killer, very psychedelic and oldschool. These are highly recommended.

I have two Jet guitars, mostly as a result of this video! I wanted a cheaper end guitar, possibly to mod, and was considering either Squier or Yamaha until i discovered Jet. I have a JT 300 and a JJ 350(which isn't in this video). Overall, both are excellent quality guitars for the money, they have the same Modern C shaped neck, which feels good, smooth and not 'glossy', the frets are well finished, no standouts or uneven finishing. Tuners are decent and quite firm in action, both guitars hold their tuning really well. There's no issues with neck pockets, its a snug, well machined fit. The body finishes are great, very even, no sign of overspray or finish blemishes, the T Style is a sunburst, so you can see the wood grain. Mine is a two piece and it's a decent quality bit of wood. It isn't bookmarked, but it's a ok match. Seems to be Basswood. The JJ 350, which is kind of Jaguar/Jazzmaster shaped, is a fine gloss black, with a slightly odd, staggered string through body arrangment going on. There's a colossal amount of cutaway on the JJ 350, you can reach the top frets without any problem at all. Both of mine have ceramic pickups, they don't sound terrible, you can get a lot of really usable sounds out of both guitars, but they are the most obvious weak point. The electronics are probably the next most obvious, I'm guessing they may not be top quality, but it is worth pointing out they work really well. The pots have a decent taper to them, so they don't suddenly cut off the tone or volume at a random point, you do actually get a decent roll off all the way down to zero. Some of the more expensive models have Wilkinson parts, locking tuners, alnico pickups etc, all I've seen or played in store have looked and felt great, including one of the multi colour ones in this video, that was a nice looking bit of wood used for the body actually! Same with the birds eye maple style one Jet do, in the flesh it's a quality bit of wood! There's not much to complain about at the price, I'd really have to nitpick...the supplied strings are rubbish, but you expect that, the knobs on the JJ 350 are cheap looking plastic which still had the moulding tags on. Some people might object to the old style three saddles instead of six on the JT, but that's about it. I think they put the competition to shame, certainly the two makes i was considering and tried in store alongside the Jets, there really was no real comparison,...the other makes had ill fitting neck pockets, finish issues, didnt sound as good to my ears and generally didn't feel the same quality. I'd say if you were in the market for a budget, or not so budget guitar, Jet are definitely worth your time to at least take a look.

A small update, i had pickups from Irongear installed, guitar sounds great, and much more like a Tele. For any modders , standard pickups slot straight in, and more interestingly, the neck pickup cavity on their standard Tele's are routed for a humbucker.

One thing that's hard for guitar companies to get right is the headstock shape. I don't mind the one that these guitars have, so their design team did a good job. The 2 cheapest ones look really nice. The yellow on the tele and the white on the strat just look so clean.
@lordsong711 ай бұрын
There is no "right" headstock shape. Big name brands with patented, "trademark" headstock shapes, charge royalty fees for copying their headstock shapes. Fender and Gibson, PRS, ... will sue makers who copy their designs without permission or paying a fee to use the design.

Pretty cool. My first question upon arrival would be: 'how long will it take to scrape off this horrendous logo." I think it's good they don't have any USA distribution yet. I would probably be tempted, and i don't have room for more guitars right now..... Pickups don't sound great, though. How are they 'in the room?' If the guitar felt good, though, get an Obsidianwire solderless harness and put in some new pickups. Easy half-hour job. I just put Lollars into my MIM Strat, and g'damn-it's amazing.

I would like to have heard more about the frets (width, tall, jumbo? etc.), whether or not there is shielding in the pickup cavities and/or the back of the scratch plate, and a word or two about the feel (utility) of the tuners. For most of us these concerns might be obvious for a guitar in this price range, but should be mentioned as a part of an informative review. You might also have noted that the T-model does not have string through the body bridge, an important point to those who are Tele fans. Small quibbles though in an otherwise enjoyable review, especially for those selling Jet guitars.

The things you're picking at on that Strat are things that could've been changes without a price increase. Getting a plate with countersunk holes doesn't cost anymore than one without and those knobs look fine. You don't stare at the knobs while you play, and they're likely the thing you use least. So putting money towards them wouldnt be necessary unless they somehow had an issue, IMO.

Do we know anything about their manufacturing conditions and labour? It's just really hard to understand how anyone is making money on these, so my cynical brain immediately questions 'where's the catch?'. Are these made in Slovenia or is that just where the company is based? Anyway, thanks for an informative review - it's always good to know about a decent entry level guitar as I'm quite frequently asked to recommend something that combines being good enough to learn on without breaking the bank, or which proves to be a false economy as many cheap guitars tend to be. Cheers

@Julian Morgan There isn't really a catch - not any more. CNC machining has made it ridiculously cheap and easy to recreate with absolute precision any solid guitar body you could choose. If you're the type to turn up your nose at the thought of CNC machining a guitar, you should know that John Suhr disagrees with you, at least as far as fretboards go. You see, unless a guitar from a mass manufacturer is a master-built model, we don't want any parts of the neck to be unique, we want them to be precise. Uniqueness is not desirable when mass producing any item. By introducing stricter quality control measures, companies like Thomann have forced manufacturers to be more precise than at any point in history. By leveraging slick and sophisticated supply chain methodologies, they turn over inventory at an unprecedented rate. And, by making use of high profile social media accounts to promote their products, they've boosted their sales figures to such an extent that Thomann now generates greater revenue than Fender and Gibson combined.

@@anthonystark5412 Very interesting. As someone who's a very happy owner of a Garrison acoustic I'm not adverse to anything that makes for more efficient use of natural resources, especially our precious trees, and especially if the resulting guitar sounds great. While it's a pleasure to watch a master luthier at work with hand tools, it doesn't change the fact that an awful lot of wood ends up as sawdust and shavings on the workshop floor. I'd be delighted if these guitars come to represent such a fantastic bargain that they put all those companies making the cheap and nasty "toy" guitars out of business entirely, not least because they only serve to put kids off learning guitar. But as always it's easier to recommend a product if one has some sense of the company's values and ethics, especially towards their work force and manufacturing process. Cheers

That's mostly in the past, nowadays Chinese government is very vigilant about this, as well as forcing the factories to be environmentally-friendly. You really should try “Artist Guitars” LP59 Les Paul. An Australian company that sells Unbelievably good Far Eastern Guitars on line through their website’s in various regions! The LP59 comes with bone nut, locking tuners, coil splits and their own Bullbucker pickups based on the Seymour Duncan Jazz/JB set which are amazing! They also to Telecasters, 335’s and Strats etc that I’ve yet to try! My LP59 in cherry sunburst was supplied delivered for only £199!

I agree . I´ve reviewed two JET guitars for Gitarre & Bass magazine and was equally impressed by the Price/performance ratio.
@CallMeSmigl2 жыл бұрын
Hey Heinz, avid reader of Gitarre & Bass here :) I have always wondered: in my opinion the biggest problem with cheaper to middle priced guitar is the lack of proper quality control and the very varying range of quality in general. Since I doubt that you (as most professional reviewers) are ordering the guitars anonymously but instead get sent a hand selected one I always assume that these companies just make a batch with "the extra effort" for a couple hundred ones that are sent to journalists. Sure they will have the same pickups and basic features, but I always have my doubts when I read about the "suprising quality and worksmanship" that went into a 150 € guitar. Am I wrong here? What's your oppinion on that?
@HeinzRebellius2 жыл бұрын
@@CallMeSmigl Thanks for your message - and for the interesting discussion point. I've been testing guitars for years, and very few companies tweak their instruments specifically for this purpose when they send them to the magazine. Sometimes that's hard to understand because we all know how important a medium can be. But most companies don't want to spend that time for optimizing the review guitars. There have been and always will be examples where this is quite obvious - if the guitar has a defect, for example, that an attentive final inspector would have discovered before sending it out. In the case of Jet, I'm pretty sure that the guitars I got were not optimized or selected specifically for us. Simply because I have heard similar positive impressions from many musicians as I was able to gather during my time with them.

Can you talk more about the tremelo system in these guitars? I really want a locking trem system where when you break a string you can put a new one on quickly, like a regular guitar. Can you do that with this guitar? about the trem system. If not which ones can you do that with? In fact that would make a great video. All about trem systems. If you do that please make sure to include the Vega trem. I’m looking for a cheaper guitar (under 800) where I can play some Van Halen. But I also want some diversity. This guitar may be the thing but I need to know more

It's more impressive than HB in that Jets got the fretboard radius right. HBs are all flatboard (15 or higher) with only a few exceptions at 12"
@mermiatwd Жыл бұрын
The JS500 is actually a kinda interesting axe. Its a 24 fret 25.5" scale, but it has the same 9.5" neck radius as all the other Jet guitars. Now a 9.5" radius (today's standard Fender radius) is not necessarily a "shredders" 14" to 17" radius, but it does make an interesting H/H Strat style guitar. I think Jet would really be doing themselves a big favor if they offered a 12"-14" compound radius Tom Anderson style and a 16" or 17" radius Ibanez/Jackson style neck as an option. That JS500 with a 24 fret 12/14" compound or 16/17" shredders neck could be really attractive and a big seller.
