I have that same phobia. I was a firefighter for 34 years. I’ve seen and been in what seems like endless, incredibly dangerous situations and places and almost lost my life several times. It petrifies me to play a guitar in front of strangers in a store. Cheers from NY, USA, you make my week every Friday !!

I’m the same. The last time I went to a store I took my Fender Mustang Micro amp with headphones to play through. You can at least assess the guitar and build up some confidence before plugging into real amps etc.

No guitar fan can argue the coolness factor of an authentic vintage Les Paul, even one with the idiosyncrasies of the early 70's ones. I personally would almost immediately have it refretted and set up properly. I hope it gives you years of pleasure. Thanks for the video!

Absolutely gorgeous vintage guitar. I'm so happy you went back and had a better look at it and I can tell how comfortable you seem this time round. You got a reasonable price for it. I'm a fan of buying brand new guitars so got me a 2023 Gibson Les Paul custom in ebony (same color as yours) and I bought it the exact way you did from a guitar shop. I took with me a tuner, my '97 Gibson Les Paul standard for comparison, even a pick and a strap to try standing up. I was left for more than an hour to play, feel, compare and inspect. it cost me a fortune but worth it a totally a different animal. Enjoy in good health.

I am still baffled why Gibson hasn't done the Gibson stamped pickup covers on a reissue or just made the covers available to buy. Awesome to find an old 70s Les Paul Custom and it sounds great. There is something about a lower output humbucker that just sings. Those T Tops sounds great. After years of tone chasing I discovered that for me a Les Paul with 50s wiring, and an Alnico 2 magnet HB under 8k inspires my playing in ways that no high output setup ever could. My 2016 Epi Koa Custom sounds very similar to this guitar, so apparently I was chasing the sound of a T Top Les Paul.

The only guitar shop I ever felt comfortable in was Tempo Music in West Ealing back in the early 80’s. I bought my first Strat there, a ‘79 new back in 1981. The shop was run by a nice bloke called Laurie, they had some good stuff there and because it was kind of out of town it was usually quite chilled there. It was a tube and a bus ride to get there for me. Over the years I bought three Strats, an SG and a Tascam Porta One from him, all new. If I knew then what I know now I would have gone for the older vintage stuff but such is life, you want new and shiny when you are young 🙄. He let me take one Strat back and swap the rosewood neck for a maple one after I had it for a while. He showed me his store room upstairs once where he kept rarer stuff, wish I could remember better what he had up there now. I do reminder he had a new Les Paul Custom in Goldbursf up on the wall (like Silverburst but rarer), wish I had bought that one. Wonder where it is now?! I enjoy your channel Colin, your relaxing delivery makes for a pleasant watch 👍

Congratz, Colin - seems like a happy ending and the fact that the guys in the store were cool, always good to hear. It's a beautiful guitar, such a classic. I have a '68, I'm the 3rd owner. Also all original apart from speed knobs and the 1st guy kindly contributed a few small studs where he had added and then subtracted a Bigsby and buckle rash but it didn't break the nitro job. I played it live thru the '70s and in the studio ever since and when I took it in to get a new jack plug fitted (old one was dodgy) my buddy asked if I wanted new frets but nah - all chords / lines voice fine and I'm used to it. Mine doesn't have 'checking' - I sometimes wonder about that . . . maybe it's more of a thing on old Standards? Or a Tom Murphy invention. I think you're absolutely right about the pick-ups - they leave any LP I've played since for dead. I think the re-issue '59ers are all going for an edgier 'Pagey' brightness but Customs from that era have a terrific 'halo' going on . . . and the '60s neck suits me down to the ground, don't like the chunkier ones much, frankly. Happy to see you happy - what a terrific find, you deserve it! Cheers! P.S. I freeze in guitar shops, I think it's sorta normal 😅 PPS - finally got around to weighing mine - 9.7 pounds!

I can so relate to your guitar shop phobia. If I’m interested in a guitar I always ask the salesperson to play it for me rather than get all nervous about my playing. I will then just play a couple scales on it just to get a feel of the action, neck, fret ends etc. and then decide. My local shop is really good about me bringing a guitar back after a few days if it doesn’t suit me.

played an early 80s black beauty at a shop in Dublin. really heavy, but the playability, feel and tone were great. custom shops get close and sometimes surpass these. relicing is alright if done well, and you can find really light examples from gibson custom. used, the prices are similar. as for performance anxiety at shops, i used to have it, then at some point stopped caring. there are less skilled players playing way louder than you at any shop. also helps to have a repertoire of a few tunes/ideas that are not zeppelin or deep purple.

I used to have a 1970 black Les Paul Custom very similar to that one. It was a fretless wonder that I had re-fretted when I worked at Rickenbacker. A friend, who worked in the woodshop used Rickenbacker bass frets. It had the same tuners which I left. Put big fuse shaped knobs on it. The ebony fretboard looks great and seems to change the tone. Gave to another friend in the spirit of Joe Walsh to Jimmy Page. Some of the teachers at GIT said it sounded pretty good!

She was my first 'proper' guitar & has been my main gigging guitar ever since. Everyone always thinks of the Randy guitar but for me it was more Jonesy than anyone else but I'd always wanted a white one. Of all my guitars, she's the one I'd never part with. I’ve been playing for 53 years now but I get the same feelings when I’m in a guitar shop. Always seems to be at least one or more youngsters playing loud and trying to show how good they are. So I usually just go off by myself and play unplugged to see how it feels in my hands and if there’s some connection between it and me. Maybe that’s just the introvert in us. Funny that I can play in a band and never feel self conscious. I’m sure there are many others that feel the same way. By the way… what a sweet guitar that Les Paul is! Great find… congratulations!

It's good to see you exploring around, out of your comfort zone a bit. I've been experiencing the same things, just in reverse. I started out with, and prefer, the more traditional singlecut models of guitars. But, just recently I bought my first full floating tremelo equipped guitar. It's the PRS NF3 in Gunmetal Grey with a rosewood fretboard. Everything about the guitar is the polar opposite of my normal "go to" specs. Especially the neck carve and overall construction of the guitar. I said I'd NEVER, buy a guitar with a scarf joint on a satin clear coated neck. Well, I did. And it's great! I'm really pleased with the overall construction of if. For $700 dollars U.S. it's one of the only guitars I've ever bought, that didn't need at least a few upgrades. Other than a treble bleed curcuit, and switching the middle and neck pickups around physically in the pickgaurd. Just straplocks. It's certainly unique. But still feels really familiar. I encourage people to try one before dismissing them. This isn't a Silversky with different pickups. Completely different in every possible way. Other than being PRS's, they have very little else in common. The NF3 trumps the Silversky in all categories.

Remember on a London trip went to Denmark Street and saw a 70s Deluxe , full Thin Lizzy vibe and never played one back in the day but was dissapointed in it and the guy in the shop produced a custom like this but it looked as though it had been bouncing behind a few transit vans but what a sound ! These Norlin era Gibsons get slated but any I’ve played seem good or even excellent! Same applies to 70s Strats , love em , mate had a 73 and I’ve never played better .

Sir, your Chanel its one of the BEST. Who love guitars, loves this Chanel. I need to say my favorite guitars among others are Gibson les paul customs from 57, 68 to 72, 73. And that guitar is lovely. She have your voice. I think She was made for you Sir.

It's cool to see the giddiness he gets from this guitar, I can't wait to go into a shop and find a guitar I have to have.
