There are too many 'Peter Perfect' videos on KZbin. This was a lot more educational than watching some pro with unaffordable luthiering tools breeze through something like a refret and making it look like he's making toast. A normal guitarist trying to do a 'kitchen table' job with all the frustrations that go with that. Superb content.

Bodgers of the world unite! Lost count of the number of times I’ve done more harm than good, either by being in a hurry or by sheer cack-handedness. 😮 I’ve got a lockup full of “might come in handy one day” guitar, amp and speaker cabinet bits. I recently had a major clearout (three carloads to the tip!) and it was massively cathartic. 😊 A good trick l use for tight string ferrule holes, Colin, is to heat the up the ferrules and push them in with a soldering iron. It softens up the wood and gives a nice, tight fit - and a very satisfying squeak as they go in! If you had a big enough iron, you could do that with these bushes too. I’d never use a drill for tuner holes, either. - terrified of coming out the front! I use a little hand pin vice and take it reaaaaly slowly. I also aways lubricate the screws with soap or wishing up liquid.

I've had my 1969 Telecaster since 1977 and it's always been my "workhorse" electric guitar. The other year, one of the tuners went bad and I needed to make a decision: keep it original (as the value of it is now has gone high) or keep it my main instrument. Well: 1. I will never sell it whatever and 2. I still want it to be playable as my No1 guitar. So I hammered in the new bushings all went well, but some days later there were cracks in the headstock of my 55 year old guitar.... argh... I was pretty devastated for a week or two, but then decided to look for a guitar luthier which could help me. Found one, who did the job properly and made the new tuners sit in without any cracks in the headstock - wow! So there are skilled people around to help you if you have screwed up!... :)

Looks and hopefully sounds good when it's finish! I love resurrecting guitars myself. I work on a lot of guitars for friends mostly upgrades and set ups. I rarely charge because it's a hobby. I do get to keep all the parts I replace so I have boxes of parts, pick ups and trashed guitars. For the cheap pick ups I usually wax pot them but my little vacuum chamber I built from a pressure cooker it's old and the aluminum is cracked so it sucks in air. I am looking for a new/used one to convert. As far as the chip/cracked finish I can usually fix them with a little superglue and clamp it after I will sand an polish it and it becomes invisible. To keep it from happening I chamfer the holes/finish before hand. Before I did it I chipped several finishes. Depending on if I can find the chipped paint I will superglue it and do the same clamp and polish it. For chip repairs on guitars I have had huge luck with building up layers of fingernail polish in them until it's higher than the finish and knock it down using a razor blade with tape on the edges so I can use it like a plane then sand and polish. Works best on black finishes, finding matching colors for the other colors can be challenging. For clear coat I will build it up with CA and do the same as I do with the nail polish. If the chip goes into the wood I use a simple colored sharpie and do the CA thing. Not 100% effective but if you do not know it's there you'll have a hard time finding it. I was just given a Gibson/Baldwin beginner guitar with many chips thankfully they are all in the black and not the teal burst. The guitar actually surprised me at how easy it is to place and the neck and frets are decent the frets need a good cleaning and polish. The PU is crap I have several I can choose from and I probably will replace the pots. Some of the trashed guitars I rebuild I usually give them away to people/kids who want to learn.

Getting the tuner bushings in and out can be a right pain on some guitars, the last time I tried I managed to crack the headstock veneer as well, so you are not alone Colin! I'd use a small drop of black nail polish on that chip. My biggest fear about forcing the bushing in too hard is that you might find it really hard to get them out if you decide you want to change them later on down the track. I have one guitar that I purchased 2nd hand that had the tulip tuners put on the wrong way round (upside down) at the factory, so I had to drill new holes to upgrade them even though the tuners were the same style. I assume the guitar was sold originally new cheaply as a factory 2nd. Seems incredible that a factory worker could be that dozy and that the manufacturer would still send the guitar out for sale.

Cool, it looks awesome. I’m going later today to collect all the pieces for my new Partcaster Esquire. Wrote down all the specs I wanted and got a local high-end guitar store order parts for me. Kinda «modern vintage»; 12-inch tele neck with rosewood, MJT body in Lake Placid Blue with arm contour and belly cut, Amber Steamer pickup, VIP-pots, Eldred wiring and lots of other parts from Allparts and Gotoh. Even got a decal that says «Welhaven» in Fender style for the headstock. Not normally into relic, but the parts are lightly aged to match the body. I hope it will be worth the wait and money 🎉😊

'Roadworn' Fender Troublemaker anyone ? The 'Plenty' kitchen roll was to dry your tears Colin, I assume. I actually learned some great relicing techniques on the first generation Joe Strummer Signature Telecaster, where I took a sander to a 'brand new' £800 guitar (a bargain at the time, given the later re-issues) for additoional realistic relicing. It also gave me a guitar which allowed me to experiment with other 'procedures' without having to worry about damaging a pristine instrument. Your hammering out of camera shot had me in tears of laughter, reminding me of the 'Roobarb & Custard' cartoon in the 1970s...Roobarb the dog building stuff in his shed... If you know, you know !! 🤣

Christ on a bike, I love this! The lack of critical thinking is hilarious 🤣 I thought this was a spoof when you put the block under the headstock to fit the bushings. Can't wait to see what you do in pt2.

There can be few pleasures in live that can compare with fettling with guitars, Im very keen on changing out pickguards and have a Squier Strat that I have three pickguards in different colours and pickup configurations, one with the standard sss set up but with alnico ll pups one with two Kent Armstrong humbuckers and the last with with two P90's, it only takes a few minutes to swap them over and the wires to earth and the input socket are fitted with solderless connections for that purpose. Over the years Ive forgotten what else I have replaced on this and a couple of other guitars. Keep up the good work.
